The comparison of both the jets is a bit complicated i think. While F-35 is a multirole aircraft focusing mainly on ground strikes after air superiority has been established, the j-20 is a frontline air superiority fighter. I feel the comparison or an engagement between the raptor and j-20 would be more appropriate

I would say one thing though the criticisms people saw a few years ago about the J20 were not entirely baseless propaganda. If China can get their AEWC in position and enough J20s, US will not have any aerial tactical superiority close to Chinese shores. The PL15 missiles that J20 is equipped with out ranges any American missiles. If early warning radars can pick up F35s in reasonable amount of time, and data link is good, it’s possible that J20 can fire multiple missiles at F35s from 200km away. F35 does have a low radar profile and is stealthier but highly doubt it can evade Chinese aerial radars.

Was mostly appreciation of their professionalism, we are mainly used to dealing with Russian pilots, who are wildly unprofessional in these encounters and often do stupid things. Also, the reduction of F35 orders has nothing to do with the J20. The NGAD program has been accelerated and the plane has been flown, they are dedicating more resources in that direction. While our competitors are just now fielding 5th Gen fighters in small numbers, we're well into production of 6th generation planes.

It's no secret that F-35 v J-20 has been discussed by many military analysts from both sides. I'll try to be unbiased as much as possible, but here's the wrap up: F-35: Good stealth technology, works well at multi-role from air superiority & ground support. Emphasis on standardization & prices, so that US allies can easily procure & use them. J-20: Due its airframe design, it doesn't have the same level stealth technology or maneuverability needed for air superiority. Nevertheless it's very good at interception. It's main focus is to deliver long range missiles to destroys tanker & early-warning-control planes & supersonic missiles to aircraft carriers F-22: Very good stealth capability with sleeker design, very good at air superiority. Hella expensive that cost many Americans their tax & poor healthcare coverage (among developed nations) My opinion: as of 2022, US still has the upper hands, thanks to better trained & more experienced US pilots. But China's keep improving their jets & pilots at astonishing rate, both in Quality (eg. drones wingman) & Quantity (eg. scale of production & manufacturing tech).
