Thx Larko - really good synopsis of what's happening during testing and Gen 3 transition. Personally I'm very sad to see the end of Australian cars and competition. Well that happens - unfortunately. The consolidation of an Australian racing series to using American cars is a bit more than I like. Having said that I will now support a driver not a manufacturer - I suspect the expected outcome as it sells cars :)

They were cars that normal people had and could feel it was part of Australia and like they were not so far from what they have (you don't need to explain to me that they are not the same car as a road car) Mustangs and Camaros are not the same, they have always been expensive sports cars for people with money. I’m not so sure Australian fans are interested in oval racing, I know that NASCARS operate on circuits as well but their natural home seems to be ovals I don’t think the Aussie fans would want the performance of the cars that do Bathurst, Sandown, Adelaide etc compromised to run Ovals. Not that we have more than one oval here. We tried NASCAR a bout 20 years ago, it didn’t last too long, I think we like corners that go both ways.

@@MICHAEL-ys3pu I would usually agree, but with the next gen car having more road courses and even street circuits (like the upcoming Chicago street circuit race) was something they had in mind and wanted to have a car that could be converted to run at all the types of tracks. It's the one time it might have been possible. NASCAR already used the transaxle from the Supercars, using a shared platform was actually sensible for once.

It's been a long journey to get tho this stage Larko....and with you reporting back to us, it makes it a very interesting one at that. Thank You! I was of the understanding when the Gen 3 cars hit the track, it was to save money by having the same "under pinnings" for each brand of body that sat on top of them. I just can't imagine the costs already endured in setting up this formula that will take these cars into the future. I guess the ticket pricing will become so much more to cover it, or am I just being incredulous or suspicious?

There’s a lot of TV money involved, Supercar racing coverage is popular on pay TV in the US, as well as the Uk and Europe. But it’s the uS pay TV money that’s important, hence Mustangs and Camaros are a great choice and wii attract lots of fans. One of the reasons that the Manufacturers are insisting that the cars profile is the same as production. Unlike our 4” shorter commodores and blimp topped Falcons from Gen 2.

"Doesn’t this devoid the statement - race on Sunday, sell on Monday. " That statement has not applied to Australian "Touring" car racing for the last 30 years. 1993 rule changes to get rid of the skylines is what tossed that statement in the bin. As for parity racing, the argument is that it puts the winner back on the driver and not the car. Compare Supercars to say F1. Supercar races are a LOT closer and more exciting than the predictable procession that F1 has been over the past 20 years or so.

Having clear advantages for 1 side is horrible for the action. It means 1 team romps home with all the wins. Creating the parity is what makes the action. It's why Moto3 is some of the best racing on the planet. It's down to setup and driver. Race on Sunday, sell on Monday is brand value and you don't even have to win to see the value. Just the presence in the living room at all drives sales. The winning cars will still generate sales on Monday because they are simply advertising.

@Bruce Mcginty I do get what you mean though. Kind of like NASCAR did back in the day, right? Run what you brung and what wins on Sunday sells on Monday kind of thing. I agree 👍. I think there should be 3 classes imo. Showroom stock (with cages and safety equipment), what they are doing now where the drivers come into play only (basically) and then unlimited class.

So compared to gen 2, the gen 3 supercars make around 50hp less, have 60% less downforce and increased aero drag, yet they somehow still reach the same top speed? Im aware that it's all supposed to be more cost efficient for the teams, but my logical mind thinks that having cars closer together on the track would have an increased risk of more crashes, thus requiring extra production of all these custom shaped panels and mouldings, therefore its not really being more cost effective. Or perhaps im completely wrong?
@MattyS02
@MattyS02 Жыл бұрын
No, DEcreased aero drag, hence why they make a similar top speed with less power.
@zchettaz
@zchettaz Жыл бұрын
@MattyS02 Better aero INcreases the downforce - more downforce means more drag, therefore you are INcreasing the aero drag. This is what he says at 08:12 and that it kills straight line speed, hence my confusion at how they can still reach the same top speed as the gen 2s

I think it's backwards thinking with the direction of supercars. Cars now with 60% less downforce. That mean slower into corners and exit. Unstable cars with wasted power. What's the point. I want to see more downforce more corner speed that means more competitive races. Typical Australian backwards thinking.

More downforce leads to less passing, like F1, where they can't pass without DRS. Less downforce, and therefore less aero wash, means cars can follow each other closer without a performance drop off and actually make passing manoeuvres.

This is so backwards, this years cars are hard enough to drive let alone taking 60% downforce away.. all this is going to do is put more cars in the fence next year, all these drivers will be hunting the grip they are used to and itll cost some people some money.. Supercars are trying to build a worse car then this year. and by the comments of the fulltime drivers i think they've achieved that . sorry not sorry

You think these drivers aren't good enough to realise that maybe they'll have to take it back and build up to the new limits? Maybe also the amount of downforce the current cars have would allow them to go into corners with too much confidence and make mistakes? Very short sighted comment.
