I'm Ugandan, our flag was designed by Grace Ibingira, he was a politician...each of the colour bands hold meaning in relation to the country and the crested crane is like a national bird, heard to see flying around in Kampala but can be found in rural areas and in game parks. And yes, it's very hard to see a Ugandan flag flying around casually anywhere in Kampala, it is the opposite in Kenya. See, the thing is that patriotism was killed in Uganda by our turbulent history and the current autocratic regime.

We should not be misled by some wrong claims about our flags but the reality is that African flags were designed wisely with important meanings ;For example Black =our dark skin, Yellow=Sunshine/brightness, Red=Blood/brother ,Green=Green vegetation surrounding/nature, Blue= abundant water bodies/rain, White= Peace/light/bright future etc. So flags are not just copied without reason.

We are Africans as well as Ethiopians , Egyptians , Moroccans, South Africans etc but it's a fact that we can not exclude foreign assistance from our independence, even our brothers Ethiopians under emperor Haile Selassie experienced Italian colonial rule for over five years which prompted the emperor to request for military support from the USA which he was granted and that's what helped him to fight back the colonial rule and restore his throne. They never fought alone without foreign assistance from the super powers.

we truly are not 'black'. that is a racial slur and terrible misconnotation. We are not identified by a pigmentation. It is also a fulsome LIE to describe anyone as a ghost! you call some people 'white'. This is quite clearly false and a terrible falsehood but we just blithely accept the lie because IT HAS BEEN SAID OFTEN ENOUGH! Be real. We are not a colour and should never be identified with a colour. We may be darker skinned but that is simply because of melanin in our system which the others lack. It gives us so many superior advantages and is so envied the rest have spent ages looking for ways to pull those with melanin down with classifications and other such foolishness. it makes more sense to identify and be pan-African than to be described futilely with some colour. there's no need to lie is there?

Most African countries are “independent” in theory. All former French colonies’s currency is issue by France for example. Countries don’t get to exercise much sovereignty when their currency is control by another country.

Good topic to cover but isn't the title a little misleading. East African flags are pretty distinct from each other and the same goes for most of southern Africa. I guess where most people are coming from because I also confuse most west African flags. Just in case someone actually managed to read this here are the flags of East Africa. 🇺🇬🇰🇪🇹🇿🇷🇼🇧🇮🇸🇸

I agree, most of the flags that look the same are West African countries. And that's why some people in the comments say Ghana was more of an influence. But majority of countries in Africa (east, north, south ) and a few west African flags like Gambia and Sierra Leone are different l.

Ghana 🇬🇭 was the first sub saharan country to gain her independence, in describing the meaning of the colours ( red for blood 🩸 of their forefathers who fought for their independence, yellow for mineral resources, Green for the rich vegetation , Black representing the people and the star meaning Ghana 🇬🇭 is the gateway to Africa. Many African countries who gained their independence after Ghana 🇬🇭 decided to adopt these same colors and sometimes the star ⭐️ with similar or close meaning

The 'Black Star' means black excellence. This name was passed on to Ghana's national team the 'Black Stars' and even Ghana's shipping line 'The Black Star Line'. Nkrumah put in a lot of resources to ensure anyone representing Ghana shined like a star. The fact is it was Nkrumah of Ghana who actually put Pan-Africanism into practice. When Ghana gained independence, he said: 'The independence of Ghana is meaningless until it is linked with the total liberation of Africa'. Unsurprisingly, he is the only African head of state to have his statute blazon the head quarters of the OAU.

Ethiopia not Ghana! Ethiopia is the only uncolonized country in Africa and this's why other African nations copied our flag! including Ghana!! Ethiopia did a lot to end colonization in Africa, Nelson Mandela took a military lesson here in Ethiopia to end the Apartheid. we also established the Africa Union to unite African nations and many many more.... this's why the head quarter of African Union is in Ethiopia(Addis Ababa) because we did a lot of things to unite Africans!
@yawos9024

@@LezaHDPlus But Ethiopia was a reactionary country. It was Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana who initiated continental African unity - not Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. It is the same reason why in Addis Ababa, you find only the statute of Kwame Nkrumah on the compounds of the AU. Nkrumah was voted the most influential African leader of the 20th century.

The stripes and colors as you know are the influence that Ethiopia had on the independence movement of the former colonies, Ethiopia is the oldest country in the world and the only one on the African continent that was not colonized, they put the Italians to run with bees and wasps and lions trained to attack whites, politicians and the African people were very proud of Ethiopia at the time, that's why they inspired their flag in Ethiopia.
