Great video jason. I have trees that are older than me and trees that are merely around 10 years that look much older. It definitely is about appearance. I liked the airlayering bit as it made me chuckle a little as one of the recent airlayers i removed i was able to count the rings to around 30+ but as a bonsai.. its less than 2 weeks old 😅 but with a few years work i could make it look much older than the ring count. Thanks for this one 😁

An interesting take on this subject. I agree age can be a big discussion point in this field and certainly understanding the provinence of a bonsai will add to its value and desirability to collectors. Age often matters in this case but for most of us the joy comes from the perceived visual beauty - age is merely a number. great video to watch :)

I think the point is the perception of age is far more important from the visual and aesthetic point of view. The tree looks as old as it looks, irrespective of whether it’s actually 20 years or 50 years. 👍

Some Japanese black pines 5 years old can look more bonsai than some yamadori 100 years old, it's kind a catch 22 in bonsai

I can’t stand it when someone puts a tree in a pot and tries to sell it for a ridiculous price. When asked why it should be getting that much money, they say cause it’s old. It may be a 25 year old tree but it’s only been worked on for 1 year. I rather have a 10 year old tree that has been worked on for 8 years. On some of my trees, I have signs of the name, species and when the tree started in training.

For me the value comes from the appearance of age, rather than actual chronological age. That appearance of age can come from either the passage of time (often that’s yamadori collected trees), or application of styling and development techniques.
