True story- I gave my friend a ride, and he refused to put on his seat belt. I told him that I’m not driving until he puts it on. He finally did, and 10 minutes later, a fucking car jumped over the center divide, and we hit it broadside at 45 MPH! We walked away without a scratch, but I would have ended up scooping up my friend and taking him home in a pizza box if I didn’t make him wear it

Don’t forget that the seatbelts themselves have pre-tensioners which pull you back into your seat so that you don’t have the airbag smash you in the face, this also starts the deceleration process sooner. It’s all about controlling the deceleration in such a way as to minimise the injury and the system has very little time in which to do that.

Former airbag system engineer here. The bags go off whether you are wearing a belt or not. Older systems, the bags come out full force so if you don’t wear a belt, you may hit the bag during inflation. If you wear a belt, it works like in the video. Newer systems are multi-stage so if you do wear a belt, it will be less force on your body. Also, newer systems have pretensioners (explosive device like the airbag) on the belt that will pull you back into the seat to slow you down even more. Wear your belts! The airbag module checks the status of your bag when you start the car (flashing airbag light). If it stays on, there may be a problem. If it goes off, then system is ok. If you don’t see it at all, then someone has tampered with your system.

I learned recently that the 9 and 3 position for holding the steering wheel isn’t actually just for control, it’s so that in the event of a crash, your hands and wrists aren’t in the way when the airbag deploys (which is the case with 10 and 2) as that can lead to even more severe injuries.

These studies were done back in 1997 at University of Miami Ryder Trauma center, we did 3d animations showing this. One of the issues without a seatbelt is also the airbag getting under the chin and causing a neck injury.

I used to think airbags just don't work, mainly because I had been in several accidents as a kid and never once had them come out with my family even in big accidents, however I was driving my car to get to a friend one night who claimed suicide and a part on my car broke. This caused me to lose control of my steering and I hit a semi sideways on the freeway at 75 mph and then into a wall, my airbags saved my life as well as the belts. Long story short I don't get into a car without my seat belt lol

The air bags deployed & saved me and my passengers' lives. Neither of us had seatbelts on. We were both knocked unconscious, but unharmed by that impact.

I think it's more apt to say the airbag is *tuned* to use with a seatbelt. You can tune it differently to work without one, but it probably won't be as effective.

Funny story. The seatbelt wasn't buckled but my brother's friend was cleaning his car one winter when his airbag deployed for no reason in his face throwing him out of his car and face down in the snow beside his car where my brother found him knocked out face down in the snow a few minutes later. I don't trust them. They're not safe and by not being safe they definitely are not a safety device. Otherwise you wouldn't be warned to stay as far away from them as possible.

I wrecked my Mustang in February this year, it was really bad. Smashed into the back of a stopped car that was waiting to turn onto a side street, I was going at least 50mph but could've been 60mph. I didn't have my seatbelt on, and airbags deployed. I was transported to OU trauma center and luckily I didn't kill myself. I don't remember a bit of it. But I'm sure the airbags helped despite no seatbelt. I learned to wear my seatbelt and to not drive distracted as I must've been distracted by my phone or something in order to just plow into the back of a stopped car at speed.

Airbags very much do work in unbelted crash scenarios. There are actually specific unbelted crash tests that car manufacturers have to undertake in the US. These tests would be near impossible to pass without airbag deployment. Additionally - vehicle manufacturers would love to not have to pay hundreds of dollars to include seatbelts in your vehicles if they didn't need to. Wear your damn seatbelts guys! Here are the physics about why airbags are helpful. Impulse is Force times time as it is mass times a change in velocity. Your change in velocity will remain the same (i.e. whatever velocity your head was going at immediately after the collision to 0 m/s). Your mass will remain the same as well. However, time would increase and thus, force would decrease to maintain impulse.

They definitely work without seat belts. I got into a crash over a year ago. Wasn't wearing my seat belt but had those little buckles in the seat belts to stop the beeping sound. It saved my life I hit a truck.
