When you realize all the things that happen when the airbag deploys, it's just insane how fast it all works.

3:30 someone crashed into a tree nearby but these 2 guys just do their buisness, that is some dedication to the job.

This technology has saved my life two times. Thank you for such an informative lesson on this feat of engineering!

I work in an airbag and seatbelt factory here in the philippines, the work is very meticulous, the sewing needs good quality for everyone's safety.

I am in favor of airbags, when you have your seatbelts on. As a retired firefighter I've seen them save lives many times. However I will never forget the Thanksgiving two cars just bumped corners (not even enough to destroy the lights) and the passenger airbag deployed. There was an unrestrained 5 year old girl in the seat who had bent over to pick up a toy in the floor board. She was hit full force, inches away and died instantly. Probably the single most horrific thing I have witnessed. Airbags are great when used properly, please make sure everyone has on their seatbelts!

Good video. I worked with Airbag and Seat belt and Seating systems years ago. I didn't notice anything wrong with your presentation. Additional things you could have mentioned are: seat belt pretensioners that deploy before the airbag to make sure the seat belt is correctly tensioned, and that the passenger seat sensor determines whether to deploy the passenger airbags (specifically). A good idea is to link to your seat belt video at the end because KZfaq's algorithm might not.

This invention is literally a life saver. Kudos to the people who made this.

My mom had an accident a few years ago with a Hyundai (5 seats) car. The airbag didn't open even if it was armed but compared to a normal accident she was hit in the back-side of the car by another car at around 75 km/h while she was taking a right corner (so she had relatively very slow speed herself making the impact force IMENSE. She got a head injury but was better in a few weeks. The reason for the airbag failure might be due to the car being hit in the back not in the front where most sensors are.

speaking of potholes, I used to be scared of airbags deploying just because of potholes. and eventually, just in 2019, I ran into a very deep pothole one night and thankfully the airbag didn't deploy. the dashcam came off from the windshield though and I bit my tongue lol. at least now I have peace of mind that airbags don't usually deploy just because of deep potholes 😄

I work at an airbag factory in germany where we manufacture the generators. The quality control that every small element goes through is simply astonishing.

I was in a car crash with my mom (nothing severe) and I was about 6 or so at the time but I still vividly remember the smell of the airbags. I am 21 years old now.

This girl looks so calm and comfy and keeps crashing into things. I would think she enjoys it a lot if I didn't know better.

I really loved how we chose woman for the demonstrations. 😂

My car's takata airbag was just replaced in a recall this year. I recall a documentary where people said Takata airbags that failed QA would be put into cars. That documentary also said that the chemical was never changed - they just added something to absorb moisture, but that eventually when its absorbed as much as it can, you have unstable detonation again.

This brought back memories of my first job in the automation industry back in the 80s. I worked at a company, Advance Automation Systems Corporation, in Simi Valley, where we made three automated production machines for AT&T, so that they could produce the magnetic ball switch for these systems. The assembly went through a final continuity (Ohms) test for the contacts and the magnetic field (Gauss) was verified as well.

Fantastic video! Loved to know the evolution of airbags. Once an airbag exploded in my face, i was copilot and i the crash caught me off guard, i was slightly leaning forward and the airbag slapped my face. It was like a hand slaping my face at 320km/h.

Me and my mom were in a crash on Aug. 13, 2021. We were ni a 2008 Cadillac CTS. We called it the "Black car". We were headed down street not even a quarter mile from home. A drunk driver hit us on the side at 80. The airbags were powerful enough to make me and my mom go deaf for a short time. If it was any closer to any of the doors we would have flipped over.

Thankfully I've only ever been in one crash where airbags deployed. In July 2016, I worked back to back 12h shifts at my job without sleeping a wink in-between, and I fell asleep at the wheel of my 2003 Chevy Cavalier in heavy traffic on the interstate on my way home, and just plowed into the back of the car in front of me at 25-30 mph. I was going slowly enough that I didn't even hit the airbag with my body or head, the only "injury" I sustained was scrape-like rashes on the side of both hands, where the airbag had rubbed over them as it deployed.

I just couldn't stop myself from watching this video to the end. 👏

All along I thought that compressed air was used to inflate the airbags. After all, air bags are not inflated by air! Very instructive video. One must salute the diligence and creativity of the engineers who designed the product.

nutshell from me who experienced airbag deploy/car crash: u dont feel anything except huge BOOM, smoke, sulfur smell and weird loud noise. (i got the bad position at the front and my doors were a broken a bit so remember, if u are in a crash then get out of the car at any chance because if you won't then sometimes it can be your last car drive because something can mess up and uh, ya know, car would get on fire or someting bad so it's better to not risk. also if your doors are slammed then kick them because you can buy new car but you can't buy new life)

Thank you for the information. I didn't know that seat belt and airbag are interconnected. Normally I release the belt just roubd the corner before coming home.on this day I didn't release the belt .luckily the airbag worked just round the corner.

Good video and informative video! 👍 Also the animations you guys do are amazingly detailing the point across. Only 2 small nitpicks: in the beginning of the video the wheels turn left before the crash and the steering wheel hasn't turned left. And near 5:33 the character model seems to get into a crash animation and returning to default position before the crash. And then during the actual crash the character model is static and shows no animation. I know, I k know.. It's nitpicking and the those small things doesn't take away from the information. You guys rock!

this is wonderful explanation, i was always wondering how airbag work ever since i heard the word of it since like 20 years ago

There was an incident in which a family didn't know about the seat belt's need for the activation of airbags, and sadly they died from the crash, there family registered a complaint against the car company thinking it was a manufacturing error, and they never reached anywhere as the necessity of seat belt was common for every model and is explained in the manuals. They bought the car for the exact reason of airbags yet it never helped them in time of need, because of lack of intel and taking safety measures too lightly. The point is, if you dont follow the guidelines for safety, non other will be responsible for your damage and you will have to suffer it painfully...

They are called SRS and this should be spelled out: Supplementary Restraint System! So it is in ADDITION to the seat belt. But some cars have belt pre-tensioners. If you have up to 9 bags popping you want to remain in the seat as tight as you can.

I've been in one accident I cab remember where the airbags went off. The exhaust gas irritated my throat for days after. I didn't actually witness the airbag deploy because I blacked out before I hit the car in front of me

With such an ingenious mechanism, it is a pity only fews have the privilege to experience it. Everyone should try it once, instead of letting it sit and rot 🔥

Great video but you've actually got a few things wrong in this one! The Takata recall was due to them using Ammonium Nitrate NOT Sodium Azide as they swapped to a cheaper material while most Inflator Manufacturers were trying to distance themselves from Sodium Azide due to its toxicity. It is Ammonium Nitrate's sensitivity to temperature changes and moisture that caused Takata inflators to rupture which is also why ruptures are more common in more humid areas.

It's still mortal though depending on the speed of the vehicle, a man recently died in an accident in my place last December cuz the airbag pressure on his face was high even though he had his sit belt put on ,he face was partially damaged and he died instantly, so folks who overspeed , air bags are good but doesn't guarantee 💯 security, Don't drive too fast

i gotta tell you this story... Today i was driving back to school with my friend, i was a lil bit heavy with the pedal and after a powerfoul start my car (Lancia Y 2013) drifted, reaching around 30 km/h, until i faced a wall, Obvsiusly i pushed as hard as possible on the brake, and i think i crashed into the wall around 20/15 km/h, unluckly the airbags opened and we were shocked because it happened so fast and we were going so slow. After realising what i did (and nearly soffocated by the bad smell of the airbags) i got off the car and checked the damage done... BELIEVE ME... Just a moved front bumper and a cracked light. THE GOOD(or Worst) Part of the story is that under my leg i found a Plastic Heart (i assume was a part of a Bracelet) around 1 cm in height and width, which almost surely has to be hidden under the plastic of my steering wheel and THIS HEART LEFT ME 2 DOTS IN MY FORHEAD after the Airbag hitted my face.... Neither me and my sister (who was the previus owner of the car) know where this heart comes from. Obviusly the most painful hit i received today... is on the WALLET Thanks for reading. Italian guy.
