Just a quick run-through on how I'm currently doing alignment pins in complex handle constructions.

Great bis👌 If you have no spacer, you can make a "spacer" just for drilling. That's the way I do it. This "spacer piece" is more like a drilljig or something like that. ✌️
@DonNguyenKnives
@DonNguyenKnives 3 жыл бұрын
That's one way to do it, gotta be careful if the spacer is too thick though and the angle of your pieces are not perpendicular to the tang (the pins won't line up).

Thanks Don, can you explain the reaming process? How do you do it?
@DonNguyenKnives
@DonNguyenKnives 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I could've done a better job going into more detail on that. Basically every drilling operation I talk about, I chase the holes with a reamer to make them more accurate and round. For a 3/32" pin, I drill slightly undersized and then ream with a 0.0940" reamer.

About chamfering that steel. How much do you grind off? Got the same problem with thin alu spacer...
@DonNguyenKnives

Not much at all, but you can go as far as you want. I maybe take off like 0.010" with some 1200 grit paper by hand.

I get issues when trying copper pieces, they get so hott & usually the epoxy fails. Know anyone who works on HT ovens in town? Mine just quit, the coils stopped heating up. Paragon less than a year old, they sent me two dead links how to check it. Might try Marjon ceramics see if they have an idea.

Hello Don, what material do you use for the pin stock? Is it local (I'm in Mesa)? Thanks. Jeff
@DonNguyenKnives
@DonNguyenKnives 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff, I usually use stainless pin stock from McMaster Carr. You can buy them in longer lengths and then cut them down to size

Two things. For your flat machinist square, Kent's Tools in town has an absolute fucking pile of old/old new stock machinist stuff for sssuuuuuppppeeerr cheap! When you're doing final glue up, would you recommend grinding grooves in your retention pins or is that kinda trivial? Thanks for the knowledge my dude
@DonNguyenKnives
@DonNguyenKnives 3 жыл бұрын
Hahaha yeah I need to get back there to restock a bunch of random stuff. I would say grooves in the pins are redundant. For me they're more for keeping things in line rather than holding everything together. Prepping the components and gluing the handle to the tang properly is what will keep the strength over time.
