Why all phones look the same nowadays? Where are the completely bezel less phones? How to solve the notch problem to design an all screen phone?
We have reached a point in time where the technological progress in the smartphone industry has stagnated for a while. There is little innovation and all phones have started to look extremely similar. In the earlier days, there used to be a lot of choices and varieties available in the smartphone market from phones with sliding qwerty keyboards to flip phones. Nowadays, every phone is a thin rectangular box with nearly identical design, specification, and features.
In this video, we will discuss why all phones have started to look same/similar and design a bezel-less phone without a notch!
So, I want to attempt to create the perfect phone design which is both technologically and commercially feasible but has some unique set of features in order to spur up new ideas to rejuvenate innovation in this industry. If enough people like these designs, then it is possible that manufacturers may make this phone a reality.
We want big displays, so we made phones with bigger displays, but now our phones have become so big that it has effectively killed the tablet industry. Our need for big displays has still not stopped yet, and we continue to want bigger and bigger displays, but our phones have already become so big that it no longer fits in our pockets properly.
But, at the current stage, the most common method has been to attempt to create a near-bezel-less display like the Essential Phone or the iPhone X.
However, there are several problems in these top-notch phones, particularly the notch! There are several essential sensors on the front side of the phone like the speaker for the earphone, the proximity sensor and more importantly the front camera which all occupies at least some space, thus creating the eyesore of a notch. Some people like it, some people hate it while many others try to adjust to this minor annoyance.
We want a 6.5 inch fully bezel-less display with 18:9 aspect ratio in our phone, so we will explore a completely different method in dealing with the problem of the notch.
Let’s just remove the front camera, proximity sensor and earphone from the front side of the phone and dedicate the entire space for the display! There you have it, the problem of the notch has been solved!
If removing the headphone jack is a new feature, then this should be also a feature, right?… Just kidding.
I have not really removed any of the features from the front side of the phone, instead what I did was to relocate it to the backside of the phone. Let me explain.
Unlike other phones which might have two, three, five or sixteen cameras, this phone will only have one camera which is kept on a rotatable flap on the rear of the phone. There will be a rotatable hinge at the top of the phone similar to the hinge which you see in a flip-phone.
The earphone and proximity sensor are also placed at the bottom of this flap, so if you want to attend a call, all you need to do is to flip up this flap and start speaking.
There are certainly few other methods for achieving a bezel-less display, but this idea of a foldable flap seems to be the easiest way to do so, at least with the current generation technology.
We will discuss the improvements in the camera of the phone in part 2 of this video as it got so detailed that it deserved a separate video.

I'm sure it will if you keep up this quality! Also with the flip idea for the camera, would it not be better to extend it to the edges (width) on the back of the phone. Therefore that allows it to be thinner lengthways. This would make it less structurally weak.
@Humtog
@Humtog 6 жыл бұрын
The quality will defenitly increase from now on. Yes it is better to have good width, but this phone will already be having short height compared to other phones due to lack of bezels at top and bottom, and 18:9 is a fine ratio which is supported by Android properly. It can also be made with 16:9 ratio.

Humtog also you should pin this comment so it doesn’t get lost when your channel starts blowing up. Also no need for apologies on the “quality” because even if the editing is simple, it’s minimalistic and clean, just like the industry you’re covering, so people will feel right at home with it. Your first video is light years ahead of 99% of even really big channels’ first videos. Everyone, myself included grows over time as they find their footing. I love my first video and it has a very special place in my heart. I’m proud of it. But it’s night and day in comparison to the content I do now in terms of editing. Everyone is always a little embarrassed with their first pieces of content in hindsight, and some even go as far as delisting them down the line because they feel like it no longer represents them, but they were an important part of their history

The idea of this concept phone was to make a cool bezel-less phone using existing technology. There is only a narrow window of few years for such tech to exsit as in the future we will have tech which will allow us to embed all sensors under the screen etc. The screen vibrate tech was used in Xioami mi mix, but that was not working properly and had many issues, Due to these constant problems, they themselves reverted to a normal speaker in mi mix2. Samsung is working on a screen vibrate sound tech but not yet released a commercial version.. Thanks

Bro I commented on your other video but one of the most important parts of a KZfaq channel blowing up is the “discovery phase” and having a good backlog of content is super important. I know you might feel like all the effort you put into this feels wasted because it didn’t get many views but it’s vital to have lots of good content like this because when you DO blow up, ALL of your content comes along for the ride, and I’m willing to bet the vote count for this video was FAR lower just a few days ago before you uploaded your adobe video. Time to start cranking out more content dude! You’ll find that once you are monetized, you get lots more exposure because since KZfaq puts ads on your videos, they are now incentivized to recommend you to others because it helps THEIR bottom line. I also want to compliment you on the fact that you actually have good audio!! Audio quality in voice overs is one of the most important things to have. MUCH more important than editing because terrible voice over with a shitty mic with lots of room noise not only kills the immersion, it makes you seem way more amateur which drastically reduces the perceived quality of your content. Anyway I know you didn’t ask for a lecture but you’re at a pivotal moment right now and I hope you have some good friends in the KZfaq community to help guide you through this strange landscape like I’ve been fortunate to have. I have lots more I could say but you’re obviously extremely intelligent and you have the rare “it” factor already that you can’t train someone to have, it’s just inherent. So no matter what you do, I know you’re going to be successful from here on out. If you’d like to talk more, I’m on twitter - NightDocsYT. Best of luck my friend! I’m now subscribed with notifs on and I can’t wait to see what you do from here on out! You and I are both at the very beginning of our big growth period so it’ll be awesome to see what happens for you! You’re going to completely eclipse me in audience size soon! Possibly even within the next few weeks depending on your monetization status and how your adobe video continues to perform!!!
@Humtog
@Humtog 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the views of this video blew up after the adobe video went viral. Regarding the audio, my actual voice is not good for such videos, so I hired a voiceover artist to do the audio for me. Everything else is done by me. I really know the importance of good audio, infact I have always felt that audio is more important than video. One of the reasons why the Adobe video was dropped one year ago was because the voiceover quality was much lower than expectations, and there were several errors in the audio. Also the puppet character's voice was terrible(not the way I wanted). But still the artist did a good job as it was a very difficult content to present. Thanks.

I would personally rather have a very slight top and bottom bezel in order to get front firing speakers: the top speaker on my OnePlus 7 Pro for example takes up a completely unnoticeable amount of space. Given the enormous increase in audio quality you can get from this, I consider it a similar tradeoff to battery/thickness. If an ambient light sensor could be made small enough to fit here then that would be useful too. Reusing the rear cameras is a common trend with notch-less bezel-less phones, but I would rather have automation here, as physically moving things (either flipping up like here or sliding with your fingers like on the A80) is more finicky, particularly with larger devices. Automated (i.e. popup) front cameras already exist, but not sure how you'd reconcile this with a shared camera setup. As I mentioned I have a 1+ 7 Pro, and I can say that a bright, high refresh rate oled should be a priority; and that I'm not sure about your use of just one camera sensor. My impression is that in the era of computational photography, aggregating data from multiple sensors (whether image, TOF, IR or whatever the next phones bring) is the only way to achieve pleasingly the list of effects that have slowly stacked up in our camera apps. Facial recognition can be less good, as you've said, but there's no reason to restrict yourself to one or the other like the iPhone/Pixel teams. I almost exclusively use facial recognition on my phone, even in challenging lighting environments (in pitch darkness, the screen lights up my face; and in clubs, flashing coloured angled lights still don't faze it); and even with the delay of my camera popup, I can click my power button and be unlocked in around half a second. I would probably still prefer a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor (since these are ready to scan all the time, where my in-screen sensor, while fast, needs me to wake the screen first) but just to point out there's no reason for facial recognition to be bad or to preclude fingerprint scanners. There is a tradeoff here between hardware, security and performance, so IR lighting (like Windows Hello) or depth-mapping sensors (like Face ID) would be useful here to enhance both of the latter. Software is another part of the experience: perhaps that was planned in a part two? Obviously any real phone like this one would run Android, as Apple don't actually care what the market wants. Using multitasking on a Note 9, with full windowed app support, was incredible, and almost makes me regret my OP; and yet the rest of Samsung's (visible) modifications to Android are mostly unneeded, restrictive and ugly. OxygenOS OTOH is minimal, customizable, and most importantly snappy, and so despite really wanting that multitasking (and, controversially, Bixby and her button) I couldn't justify getting the more expensive, less full-screen, front-speaker-less, 60Hz Samsung offerings. Again, any real phone of this caliber would use the existing software of the company producing it, or near-stock Android in the case of startups like Essential; but these are the considerations that would make a 'perfect' experience for me.

Super Job, Mr. HUMTOG ...I began envisioning the perfect 'SMARTPHONE' in the 90s with the personal data assistants my idea was LAYERS of 'REFRIGERATOR MAGNETS' that were clear ...NANO-CIRCUITRY ...BI-LATERAL 'PIXEL-CAMERA-MATRIX SCREENS' ...MULTIPLE LAYERS 'RADIO-FREQUENCY-SPREAD-SPECTRUM ...MULTIPLE 'SENSOR' OPTIONS ...The whole thing was a battery core ...the original size was 7" and magnetically linkable to several in a portfolio ...the thickness was to be around 3/8" ...originally, it would attach to a helium balloon (blimp-football) actually, the blimp would 'electrolyze' humidity in the air and maintain a static height of 12 feet above ground level with a gyroscope and ION-DRIVE ...I could see mass production at $50- each with SAN (STORAGE AREA NETWORK) today 2020 called THE CLOUD

Now in 2020 for me I'm more interested in foldable screen phones rather than one with a motorized camera pop up camera (either the rear cameras flipping or the selfie camera coming up like in the OnePlus 7pro). Motorized cameras are cool, but I'm not especially fond of the wait for the camera to be ready. It also, in my opinion, makes face ID pretty useless because I want it to be quick. Otherwise I would just use a fingerprint scanner. I'd still rather a full screen with pop up camera over a notch display though. They're pretty cool. All in all, I'm not sure how much of a delay there actually would be with the pop up camera, like with the OnePlus 7pro, I've never used one. I doubt it would be that significant, but still present. I also don't know how much I'd trust the camera not to break or scratch. Just looking at the OnePlus 7pro because that's my favourite motorized camera, yeah, the module probably isn't gonna fall out or come loose, but I don't know how well water will stay out (if a droplet gets in the space between for example), and I can almost guarantee the plastic layer will get scratched, with dirt and stuff getting over it. If it had a glass cover, I would imagine it would probably break if it was dropped and hit that part. Glass breaks, plastic scratches. Then again I haven't used it. Also with some phones where the full rear camera module rotates, sometimes they can snap when bent, so that's something to look out for. Not all though. Foldables to me are the better solution. I don't mean the clamshell foldables either, like the Z Flip, I don't really like them. I mean the Galaxy Fold typed foldables. To me the Z Flip and Razr only solve the issue of phones being massive in the pocket, and look cool. The other kind of fold however, will offer the advantage of a bigger, notchless tablet sized display (this is a hypothetical foldable at this point, just the same idea as the galaxy Fold), and then a regular sized phone screen on the other side (the galaxy Fold screen is pretty small when folded. It would've been nicer if it was near bezel less with a notch or hole punch). So you get a big screen without a notch for watching movies and that, and then a regular sized phone screen when you just want to use the phone normally, with a notch or hole punch. It could also go the way of keeping the cameras on the large unfolded display (which I wouldn't go with personally) so that you can take selfies with high quality cameras, and then make the regular folded screen bezel less. To me this is the worse option, but it allows you to take high quality selfies, where as my other version would only have a hole punch or notch style selfie camera on the regular folded side. I hope that made sense. The huge problem with foldables right now, is they're not durable in the slightest. You can scratch or basically dent the screen with your fingernail. Obviously that's not good. Then if some sand or dirt gets in the hinge, it sounds like a pepper grinder everytime you fold it. This will keep me from ever buying one, and probably even use a demo unit at a store for fear of breaking it and having to pay for it. There's also the crease in the screen which I don't like but I could get over that. At least the screen (the folded side I mean) will never break in a drop. So overall, once foldable phones improve on durability I will be all over that (at least once they get a bit cheaper). Motorized are really cool too, I just rather foldable.

Granted, a lot of people prefer to have an instant selfie, but hey, if you have to change the cameras on-screen, flipping up a camera is no drama. Adding the other sensors is clever too. I know it's 2 years later and I think you've given up on this series, but food for thought: can you add some sort of optical (not digital) zoom to the camera? It would more than likely mean a thicker flip-up camera, but would be a cool add-on. In early 2010, I was looking for a solution that could partially replace a laptop, a phone and a dedicated GPS system that didn't rely on phone towers to help positioning. I found a Garmin product that covered all of those needs. It was a smartphone running Android (3 point something iirc), but was also a dedicated GPS unit. The screen wasn't huge, but man...And it had around 12 hours continuous GPS tracking battery life. AND, if you were running the smartphone and the battery got below a certain point, you could modify in the options to shut down the smartphone functionality and use the battery for GPS only. The beauty of this thing was that if I'd bought a hand-held GPS, a phone and a laptop, it would have cost around 3 grand at the cheapest. This 'phone' cost about $900 (iirc) Australian. I hope you see this comment. I've watched the first 2 of your videos that I can find and am about to watch your third one about, I assume, infection control. I'd love to see you expand on the smartphone series. However, I understand also that editing videos like this take time and effort. Thank you for what you've produced so far.

I've just seen this video and since last year my thoughts didn't change so let me improve this. 1 - flip camera is good but making it repairable will change the game because it will break because of obivous reasons. 2 - definitely agreeing with you about fingerprint sensor but it can be underscreen, it's a smoother user experience 3 - remove all unnnecessary features like volume up&down or headphone jack. Back in the day; all features were supported by different ports then data & power combined, now we can say goodbye to the headphone jack and volume buttons because they make the structure weak and makes the phone harder to protect itself against dust and water. We can even remove type c port because we can use wireless charging and data transfer. Only button is the power button and I guess some brilliant minds can find a way to remove it too. What we'll got here a simple rectangular brick so now we can make it stronger 4 - use steel frame, frosted sapphire back panel and sapphire front panel. Make some engineers find a way to absorb impacts and dsitribute it to the whole skeleton of the phone so it won't break easily they can look at every living existance to find a way, put the money in there 5 - for god's sake please use 6k battery it can be 250g but people will love it and remember we put only wireless charging feature, so it needs more power 6 - cameras, flipping camera is the main one but you can double it just to use wide angle sensor(software must be flawless because customers will use it for selfies they shouldn't look like an alien) and two other sensors one is for depth one is for color correction. 7 - make a pro or ultra model of this and put some 99999x zoom sensors so you can make higher profit 8 - remove the curves, people will feel the power they'll have the confidence of gripping this motherfucking tank. 9- the price won't be less then $1500 but you know what? If yout software is crappy no one will buy it. Everything must be flawless 10 - or we can make another $800 and still make some money, unfortunately Actually you know what? I'm sick of other companies, let's tell people that we'll make a new phone only in 2 years, not every freaking month. When you buy our phone, they'll use it for 4 years so we'll make it $2k at least. Yeah, I'm bored in quarantine...

Wow this is a fantastic concept I wish more manufacturers took bolder risks in designing phones. An idea that you talked about breifly is cost. I hate paying close to $1000 for a phone now and these methods you presented here could really be a cost saver. Great video I'm subscribed now and can't wait for more from you!

I thought you were gonna say that you can add a small yet usable screen at the back of the phone so that you can use the back camera as a selfie camera, that would eliminate the need for a mechanism that will eventually break. If we are talking about uniqueness, that would definitely make you stand out, with the back screen and all. Plus you can add more features at your back screen like changing wallpaper, moving wallpaper, custom notifications. It would make facetiming a pain because you wont be able to see very well. And as a tip, you can make the screen a normal screen, without touch, so that the production value is lower. But idk, this is my personal opinion, and personally i do not use the front camera that much, so to me its a nice feature to have a good selfie camera, and this will for sure make me choose this phone that i described instead of the others.

You deserve a sub man, amazing content and great editing and voice! And you just started How about you make another concept about a phone with no speakers camera doesnt matter much just a budget phone with all the mandatory things, maybe you can even predict how much it would cost.

I find it interesting that the features you present are about the opposite of what I personally want out of a phone. I want durability, long battery life, ideally Dual-sim, and a firm bezel so I can hold it without registering false inputs. Oh, and waterproofing.

I think the microphone can still be on the phone without the flap as it's usually places right on the corner which is very hard to notice. My phone has the microphone at the top but it isn't obscuring anything so I'm fine with it being there

you won't be able to remove the bottom bezel since there is the connector between the screen and the internals. One way around this is to curve the display and connect it in the bottom however this can increase the thickness and the cost drastically

Congrats on the Adobe video blowing up and allowing me to see this video. Funny how the concept phone you laid out here has been essentially realized in some capacity. I understand that, like you explained, the changes in phones have become incremental over time. But I can't help but wonder, what's the next step in this technology on the level that the original iPhone was at the time? I imagine we'll see all-screen phones soon. But even bigger than that. What comes next?
@Humtog

Just as the car industry or laptop industry. Nothing revolutionary is going to happen. We will soon have more dense battery, slimmer foldable displays, AI powered operating systems which does things on its own to customize your experience, cameras which are on par with full fledge prosumer cameras. Next revoluntionary thing wouldnt be a phone but some other gadget like the Google Glass or Microsoft Hololens but with 100x improvements and powered by artificial intelligence. In like 10 years this will the trend where everyone would be wearing these glasses.
