Can also be a cause for parasitic drain, the diodes stop blocking current as normally and instead "leak" a slight current back through the coils, draining your battery.

Thanks bud. Had this happen today. Thing was so freakin hot it was smoking and melted a wire protector that was above it. Never had a diode go out before so of course I was shitting my pants freaking out why the alternator was hotter than hell. Even after sitting in 30’ temps outside for an hour, it still registered 204’ on my infrared thermometer

Would this cause a battery to get hot? I have a 2003 Dodge ram 3500 with 2 batteries. And the one on the passenger side gets really hot and smells like a bad egg. I replaced the battery on Saturday night and today Monday afternoon it's getting hot and smelling bad. So I just unplugged it.

Sounds like its over charging. Check it with a volt meter when its running. If its reading higher then 15 volts then yes.

Why my alternator +ve terminal getting hot when my car engine is running connection already too tight is this normal?
@MrDoingEverything2 жыл бұрын
Not normal really no. Maybe corrosion in the wire or in the connection.
@agastya25112 жыл бұрын
@@MrDoingEverything I already cleaned that part no corrosion left now I'm car audio guy I'm running 280amp alternator at 15.7v running on 200ah lithium cells
@MrDoingEverything2 жыл бұрын
@@agastya2511 Sounds normal then. Charging lithium really makes the alternator get way hotter and could even burn it up.

I just put in a new alternator and it's getting hot. At the battery I get 12.8 volts off, 14.4 volts when running.
@MrDoingEverything4 жыл бұрын
Hot at the battery? Output volts from the alternator top end is around 14.4 Not running battery should be around 12.8 volts.

@@MrDoingEverything The alternator gets hot after idling for 5 minutes. The voltage readings were taken at the battery.

@@William1866 Loose belt could do that also.
@William18664 жыл бұрын
@@MrDoingEverything Thanks. I had just loosened it because my old alternator's bearings went out and I thought it might have been too tight. I will tighten it up again and see what happens.

Why didn’t you show the diodes? This doesn’t help anyone.

Mine caught fire lool

Really never heard that before. They sure can get hot . Never would have thought to that point though. WOW. There is not much to burn up so the fire would not be long lasting at least unless it spreads to under the hood somewhere else. I hope it never did.
