Beware Hot Alternator

This '07 Lexus Is250 stranded my customer on a busy bridge during rush hour with no warning. No warning lights came on. She rolled to the shoulder with no power, windows would not go down, emergency flashers would not work. Something caused the relatively new battery to drain instantly while driving. Car was towed in with a terrible burnt electrical fire smell. I charged the battery and when I hooked it up a welding arc burned the lead terminal and the burnt electrical smell got stronger. It seems like the alternator shorted out internally, possibly the electric steering did too . We find out soon.

When you have a very high current leak you should suspect the alternator first; almost everything else (except the starter of course) has a fuse or circuit breaker on it. If there's a short in the alternator it will flow current without any protection. This includes shorted rectifiers which won't show any sign of physical fault. Basically the thing can turn into a big heating element - which is exactly what you experienced with this car.

I agree the alternator is toast, but are you sure it wasn't killed by a bad power steering unit drawing way too much current? I'd be checking for a drain with the alternator off before wiring it back up just to be safe.... Good Luck!

Its certainly possible, I unplugged the electric steering and the alternator , surprisingly still a good draw, but much less

It's a good thing that the starter isn't on top of the block like in some newer V engines.

Bad regulator in the alternator feeding to much current into the field coils

Had the same issue but it did not fixed it ,put new alternator on and it gets hot too no power generated any idea!??

No not this guy again,,, where is he at today? I thought it was a tcm.. Lexus fancy in your shop,, vega tables not on the turnpike.. 58 diahatsu midget trade for armored truck??? Thanks for sharing ..
