Alright, welcome to the vlog - The Lombok Life! Before doing anything else, I wanted to address the question, why am I living in Lombok? It may seem like a crazy move to uproot everything from the UK and fly to the other side of the world to live. However, for me, it turned out to be a no brainer. Here's why.
In this episode, I break down the three reasons why I'm living in Lombok. I hope you enjoy!

Thank you bro 😁 I really am feeling that at the moment - completely in my element and just ready to go. Got two more that I've already shot, just need to edit them! Thanks for taking the time to watch

This made me so happy. To know how long you’ve wanted to go out and live here and to finally see it happen. All the reasons were so well explained and the shots were just incredible. I really believe this blog series is going to take off. Also, that thumbnail is great. I personally didn’t find it cheesy and it actually made it so easy to click on this. Any time you can add a face to it I think it’ll be great. Cheers mate!

Yeah fingers crossed it'll go well. I'm super excited about the year ahead and just ready to see where it all takes me really. Awesome first episode, Josh. I totally relate to that feeling of wanting to quit the 'rat race' to pursue your passions. So happy for you guys that you've finally managed to achieve it. Ah mate thank you so much 🙏🏻 I really appreciate it. And yeah I was stoked on the underwater shots tbh! It's something I want to get a lot better at and improve on. Like, even just buying a red filter and changing some settings on my GoPro produced this, which is definitely my best underwater stuff to date...i guess eventually I'll be looking at some underwater housing for my GH5 😂 I appreciate you taking the time to watch and glad to have you along for the journey 👊🏻
@JamesBTravel
@JamesBTravel 3 жыл бұрын
@@JoshEdwardsFilms yeah, underwater housing for the gh5 will take it to the next level! Definitely worth it if you’re going to be shooting lots of underwater stuff. I’m just going through some old underwater GoPro footage at the moment and grading it is such a pain in the ass!
@JoshEdwardsFilms
@JoshEdwardsFilms 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think I'm doing my PADI diving certification soon so, I will definitely be out there a lot more. The Underwater housing is sooo expensive man 😂 like, twice as much as the camera itself! But I guess you need that peace of mind when you're 12 meters under haha. And it really is difficult. I had no idea about the loss of colour and dominating blues etc until I did some research recently. Grading GoPro footage can be tough at the best of times already

No worries mate :) that's so nice to hear, thank you. It's so frustrating isn't it? I managed to get in through a window of opportunity but it changes every day at the moment. I'm hopeful that perhaps by the end of the year we are going to see some movement. I would really love to have friends and family coming out to visit. What is unusual about life in Lombok? Can't wait to see more.

I've actually shot two more episodes of this and very early on it kinda occurred to me that the most interesting stuff people want to watch is about the culture, the language, the food and the unique stories happening here on the island. Nobody cares too much about what I had for breakfast and beautiful drone footage only works when there's a real story behind it. I truly enjoy the 1st half of this. Lots of nonsense but honest, sincere, and well, beautiful. That road in west side of Lombok is indeed a pure joy for someone who loves driving (motobike or car). On top of my head, I can only compare the experience to the roads in southeastern Jogja and the one coming down to Lake Toba from Tele. THE creme de la creme of all roads in Indonesia, tho, must go to either the 10km-ish pure asphalt road of Trans Sulawesi in North Sulawesi or the legendary Kelok Sembilan of West Sumatra - respectively, the Aryton Senna and Diego Maradona of roads. The 2nd half, I almost sense a vibe of that infamous Kristen Gray case(keyword: almost). But then, you somewhat cleared it up with your elaboration and the reply comments with Tom Burns. Subscribing.. Looking forward for more.

Thanks so much mate, I appreciate you taking the time to watch and also leaving such nice feedback in the comment. The road is unreal - I think I'll make a full video about it at some point this year :) and thank you for the road recommendations! They sound really cool so I've made a note of them. It's funny - I was literally just reading an article about Lake Toba today. It looks like a really awesome place. While I'm here in Indonesia I'm hoping to visit a lot of the different islands and explore...there's so much out there!! And yes, I know all about the Kristen Gray case lol. It actually made me a bit paranoid and I felt weird talking about all of that stuff, but I wanted to address why I'm here and what I'm up to. I'm learning a lot about Indonesia every day and I would like to dive into some of the issues that were brought to light by that case - particularly the whole 'westerner living in an SE Asian country because it's cheaper' thread. Not enough people from the west take the time to ask or think about why it's so much cheaper and what the impacts of all of this are. It's a very important thing to be aware of. Anyway, I could talk a lot about all of this haha. Thank you for the support, it means a lot 😁🙏🏻 hopefully you'll find the next few uploads really interesting! I want to share the real stories of what's happening on the island and just show people around the world how awesome Lombok and Indonesia is 🤙🏻

@@JoshEdwardsFilms I read they already built, and still building more and more of this hq asphalt roads - asbuton, as we called it. Not quite 99% asphalt like the 10km pilot project in North Sulawesi but a lot better than the usual leftover oil or plastic asphalt. I'm also not a petrolhead(?) but find the joy in driving such underrated in the world of 'travelling'. My wife is a foreigner, and altho we are occasionally on a limbo due to the lack of clarity of rules and information about visa, tax, working law, etc, we would always make sure that we are not contributing to this bribing, corruption or bending rules practices. The very least we can do. She's now here both on family vitas (or kitas) and business visa (not to confuse it with working visa). Once or twice, the bureaucracy got her so frustrated she almost opted for easier solution like corrupt visa agent. But, its kinda my job to remind her of the long term consequences and ethics involve. What I'm trying to say is that, me and many friends of mine, we have no problem of foreigners (westerner or whatever) using the power of their currency to live a good life here. Yeah, there is always questions about gentrification, neo-colonialism, priveleges, etc but those are practically too big for us to tackle individually. The least we can do as individual is to always follow the law and not contributing to the already existing market of corrupt officials. To break the circling chains of corruption, so to speak. Hopefully by that, this country can attract the 'right' kind of foreigners. Haha..such tough subject to engage in youtube comment. On a lighter note, for you and your subs here are gstreetviews of the aforementioned roads: goo.gl/maps/2CVUUYuvii94q3dk8 (Tele to Toba) goo.gl/maps/GBFrzz2Hz4PUrykC8 (Kelok sembilan) goo.gl/maps/SUmew2HocxefWDbF6 (Gunung Kidul/southeast Jogja) goo.gl/maps/sVVnwJuUmhD3U6zR8 (Trans Sulawesi)

Hahaha yes - it's such a big topic that we could probably talk about for hours over a food and drinks. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply though :) I think what you have said is exactly right! Even now I hear about people managing to enter the country on a 'working visa' because they found an agent who was able to set it up for them. We used a great visa agent here in Lombok who was able to help us with all the paperwork involved in the kitas - I'm so grateful for his help. Really good guy who knew how to navigate and handle the system. It's our responsibility to do the right thing and set an example. I think the Indonesian government could do a lot to help tidy up the laws and make things easier and clearer for everyone on all sides...but I am not the Indonesian government so it does no good to theorise here 😅 Thanks so much for sharing the Google Map locations of these roads, that's awesome! I think there's real joy in driving on roads that not many other people in the world know about yet. When you find a route in stunning scenery and have it all to yourself. It's a great feeling. Even on a small 150cc scooter haha

To those watching from a "lockdown." You have to make happen what you desire to happen. I was much like Josh, working a ton of overtime just to make ends meet, thus tired of life. Never been rich, in fact, far from it. In 2017 I escaped the USA to Bali and it was the best thing I've ever done. It took every penny I could save and a whole lot of "wingin' it." I was already 39 when I made this decision, so it's never too late. I'd give anything to have a decade of life back to do this sooner. Of course now the world has gone into high gear with tyranny. But hey, life goes on. Best live it than be afraid. Some will say, "Yeah but I can't because...." Yes you can, but it takes the will to.

Hey man, thank you so much for the kind words. I appreciate you taking the time to watch my stuff 😁 it means a lot! I'm glad to hear you want to visit Lombok - you definitely should. And congratulations on becoming a doctor! My advice to you would be firstly, find a job that fulfills you. When you enjoy your work so much, it doesn't feel like work. Of course, there are lots of different ways to make passive income now, meaning that you don't have to 'work' too much, while the revenue continues to accumulate. You need to look at your lifestyle choices - can you save more money, spend less? Look at where you live - can you find a cheaper place, live in a cheaper part of the world? There are lots of different variables to it

This was the first video I watched of yours. I then went and watched your lockdown diaries. I've never been to Lombok but recently met someone from there and want to figure out a way to be with them and maybe visit or stay for a while. Visa and money and coronavirus stuff make everything so hard. But it's nice to see an example of a story where it worked out in the end. It's possible, and you're living proof :) So thanks for sharing your story. For my own personal curiosity, I wanted to know a bit more about how you and your wife met and what your current business/work is. It sounds like you're doing something together? On the more practical side, I would be quite interested to know about expat life in Lombok and what's possible visa-wise, e.g. does there exist a way for an individual to come to Lombok, stay somewhere relatively affordable, and do remote work for a while? If so, what's the process like to do that (visa, bookings, etc.), what costs are involved or what's the budget, and what recommendations would you have in general. Also if you had any recommendations for English-speaking expat communities/networks/start-up spaces/universities/etc. it would be really helpful :)
@JoshEdwardsFilms
@JoshEdwardsFilms 3 жыл бұрын
No worries Tom - and thank you for taking the time to watch through my videos :) I really appreciate it and glad to hear it's given you some hope and positivity in these strange times! You're not wrong - coronavirus and everything has made it very difficult to move around and sort out these kind of lifestyle changes with visas etc. Me and Leyla met a few years ago in the UK while at uni (through Instagram, funny enough). She is a freelance copywriter working from home and I am here living from my savings, working on passion projects for the KZfaq channel. We do work together quite a bit on these films but currently there is no money in it (hopefully, this will change in the future). As someone on a kitas visa, I cannot actually legally work here in Indonesia. My knowledge on visas and everything is pretty limited and it's not what I'm here for on KZfaq, so take my advice and what I say with that in mind. But I think there are *plenty* of people who come to Indonesia on a social visa (a 6 month stay) and work online. Just look at the large expat communities throughout Bali. It's a bit of a grey area, to be honest. The Indonesian government could definitely help by making things more clear. But legally, as far as I know, you are not allowed to work while visiting Indonesia on this social visa or any other tourist visa. If you want to come here and work, you need to get a business visa, of which I have limited knowledge about. Basically, you need someone or a corporation to sponsor you out here. The rules seem to bend and break a lot though, from what I have seen and heard. I wouldn't advise taking risks and bending rules, personally. The way I have done it is to work very, very hard in the UK for a few years and save, save, save. Now, I have enough savings to stay afloat and live out here with no worries for the foreseeable future. In terms of sorting out a visa and everything, I would highly recommend using a visa agent. There can be a lot of paperwork and confusing things to deal with if you try do it on your own so, we used a great visa agent and he helped streamline everything and make the process a lot smoother. If you want up to date clear, detailed advice on the ground, there are plenty of English-speaking expat groups from Lombok and Bali online. Try Facebook (always very popular and active), as well as Trip Advisor, Reddit and other messaging boards. I think they will help give you much more of an idea about what can and can't be done!
