"More than half of Americans say that the present day is the worst period of American history that they can remember, according to a new survey of stress in the United States.
The American Psychological Association (APA) just released the results of its annual Stress in America survey, which revealed that the biggest stressor Americans face is the state of the U.S. The APA surveyed 3,440 American adults in August, and 63% of them said the future of the nation is a “very” or “somewhat” significant source of stress. That’s slightly more than other common stressors, like money at 62% and work at 61%.
When the survey polled Americans on what specific issues cause them stress about the country, 43% said health care and 35% said the economy. Around 30% of people reported being stressed about trust in the government, crime, hate crimes and terrorist attacks."

Native Americans weren't an organized body of people, controlling a land mass as a country. They were many tribes fighting over land, stealing from each other when they wanted to. Another tribe came by boat and used disease and fire power to take over the disorganized territory. Don't like it? Find one section of the world where this has never happened in 50,000 years and move there legally, with the natives' permission. Welcome to the planet.

I am concerned about the sovereignty of the country. The politicians listen to the donors not the American people. they work for the 1%. We are involved in 7 wars and have military in every country which will bankrupt the country. Our children have a hard future to look forward to. Why are the citizens not rising up??? Get out and march on Washington. Take back the government for the people. Resistance is not about catharsis, it is about restraining corporate power.

and catharsis may have a dampening effect on resistance too. if some progressives look at the minor victories in 2017 and think, "yea we got this in the bag", it could slow the momentum down and lead to complacency.

I turn 43 later in January, and I am only old enough to remember Reagan. Even after living through Reagan and the 2 Bush's, our current Trump era is the absolute worst I have seen in my lifetime. Furthermore, I have two degrees in history. We have had many bad presidents (Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, Andrew Johnson, James Buchanan, Warren Harding, G.W. Bush, and many others), but Donald Trump is the bottom of the barrel. I will not repeat what we already know and what has been stated billions of times, but we are living through the worst of the worst.

Stress? You bet, my husband and I spent our retirement savings trying to care for my mother who died at 98. We have no cushion at 66 and 64 and working full time jobs that collectively just pay the bills. Our home decreased by $60k and we might break even if we sell. Stress, you bet.

Adam Eaton, don't you think it's very convenient that you aren't allowed to own anything without money? Paper printed by someone you don't vote or elect or nominate? Should this piece of paper be the source of concern for 60% of the people, while at least that much works full time? It's a very simple set of questions that don't imply that I should get anything free or that money should disappear. Perhaps it's just not being well distributed. Go check those charities that simply collect wasted food and give it to the poor, then extrapolate for a global scale and you'll quickly understand there is enough for everyone - it's just not profitable to do so.

Ronald Reagan began the stress by deregulating banks and savings and loans. Savings accounts used to "earn" 5% compound interest just by being deposited in a bank. Now banks "steal" deposits by "giving" one or two percent interest, only on long term commitments of large sums. Investing money for larger returns is being guided into the stock market, where the rules are loose and complicated for the small investor.

When I grew up starting in the 60's even with all our troubles I thought the country was making progress towards being more fair. Race and gender were defined as issues and we all knew what was needed to drive that towards more justice. As a young adult out of school I was able with a bit of help to live on a minimum wage job, have a car, and go to college - and felt that our country and government had my back and I appreciated the system for that and it gave me a certain pride and confidence in our country. With the election of Reagan and the reversal of things like the Fairness Doctrine and a lot of retrograde and regressive political rhetoric from the likes of Sam Donaldson, George Will, and the attack on PBS forcing them to inject Conservative/Libertarian fake news, this started to feel different. The indicators of what the government's trajectory was from basically attacking FDR's New Deal and Second Bill of Rights, to all this unprovable BS like "trickle down" and divisive rhetoric, it has appeared and gotten more clear that what we are facing is basically a fierce and hateful return of oligarchy, monarchy, aristocracy and what could be explained as the refinement of fascism, fascism 2.0. I no longer feel that the US government, the top level of our business sector, press and educational institutions have any legitimacy and I believe many Americans are looking for a simple model and way forward to crystalize around and rebel against this increasingly totalitarian and ugly system that is being undemocratically constructed around us by a group that like Donald Trump and others are some of the evil masterminds or injustice, misery, and genocide.

Why are we stressed? 1. Starting with the first recession of 80's then 90's 80's, 1 person does work of 3 for same pay and working longer hours. Employers taking advantage ever since. 2. Employees afraid of using vacation and sick time for fear of first to go in event of layoffs. No down-time. 3. Jobs that exist for working people don't pay enough to pay bills. 4. Last 20-30 years have seen huge numbers of workers recruited from other countries to fill positions for lower pay, keeping wages low. 5. Jobs are being outsourced and moved overseas. 6. Pensions are being dismantled and replaced with vulnerable 401k's. Saving for retire impossible living check to check. 7. Seniors are living in poverty on social security, etc., all are sure to be cut back by this administration. 8. Homes not affordable, renters being taken advantage of. 9. Racism and bigotry. 10. Crime and violence 11 Constantly under camera's 12. Worst President in American history. These few things come to mind for me, at least.

I said I'd rather pay 2% more in income taxes for universal healthcare for everybody in the damn country than spend over 10% of my income on health insurance for just myself. And health insurance companies do indeed get tax dollars, because the corrupt fucks ruining this country subsidize them unnecessarily. And if it costs 25% more to live in the UK, and you get paid on average OVER 30% more than you do here in the Disjointed States, what is the problem? I live in Germany, as a middle school teacher. That makes me earn in the top 10% tier. Health care is basically free, 10 Bucks for extraordinary pills maybe. My job is FOR LIFE, i cant get fired (besides commiting murder and rape). I have a 25% of the year off ( I enjoy gaming on my ps4). Im paying of a house from a quater of my income. My vacation this year is to Hawaii. And Germany isnt going bankrupt any time soon, on the contrary. How is your life going?

Minimum wage in Canada as of today is 14 dollars an hour. The people in the USA. really need to get control of their federal government. Your government is going backwards not forward. Hear I sit in Canada just watching it happen and there's not a thing I can do about it. All I can do is hope for a better 2018 for my American brothers and sisters then 2017 was. Adam Eaton, If you live with in 150 miles of the American border and that is about 85% of all Canadians then the cost of living is about 4 - 5% more. If you live way up north then the cost of living is similar to living in Alaska, The last I heard that was part of the USA. The one thing that offsets that cost of living in Canada is Universal Health Care that comes out of our tax dollars. This means Americans will soon be absorbing more cost per person then what Canadians have to absorb even in the far north of our country. Your health care system is for profit insurance based. This means your screwed if you have to depend on it to much. You have 300,000,000 in the USA. We have 30,000,000 people in Canada. We can support universal health care, why can't you?

I live in Canada, I certainly wouldn't want to trade locations with you or governments. You don't know what your talking about, if it cost twice as much to live in Canada only the filthy rich would be living in the country. Trust me, there is lots of poor people living off minimum wage, I'm one of them. Try using facts instead of opinions and a little logic would help. Our costs are lower then the USA. It's how the money is used that determines cost of living and of course where you live in your country on a person by person bases. I checked your channel, It looks like your a Trump supporter, So be it, I'm not a tax audit machine, Do your own research. You can check Federal income tax based on income levels your self in Canada. I'm just saying were far better off. It's a more fair tax system in Canada. Some of that tax money goes to retraining when an obsolete industry ( coal mining ) goes under. Time to move into the 21st. century. Old technologies die and are replaced with new technologies. The taxes also pay for every ones health care in my country. Another way women may be more stressed is just that maternal instinct in many women- when amplified and enlightened that instinct becomes a want to protect all beings- not just our biological children. As mothers looking at this it is really hard to bear.

On top of getting screwed by the economy and the government, we have to deal with people who have retreated to the safety of their identity groups. You can't even talk to some about the economy or the government without them questioning your identity and motives. We've been played hard and I don't see this getting better in the near future.

If you’re a gay, black, Islamic trans women, then you really don’t have a choice but to go with the party that tells you ‘part of our values are to protect your right to live freely and equally’. Democrats can be problematic, but what are you gonna do? Vote Republican? Even if for some reason you like their fiscal policies, Republicans still hate your guts and think your entire life is a joke. You can’t blame progressives for all of this because If Republicans would just stop being so bigoted in regards to these issues, then there wouldn’t even be a problem to begin with. Lost Biscuit If you know of Republicans who are willing to accept and fight for the rights of LGBT+ people, including trans people, people of color, women, and people of all religions, including those with lack of religion, then it would truly warm my heart. I’m happy you’re in a situation where you can feel comfortable expressing yourself as a gay Republican, but I’ve been sneered at and jeered at by a lot of Republicans who figure out that I’m a trans man. It’s definitely still an issue if I don’t feel safe in a room full of my father’s Republican friends.

I have spent the whole year terrified. As a mother of four daughters, I worry about what their future may be considering what I hear in the news. What are the crazy people running our country going to do to us? The political scene has divided us all so much, I don't even feel safe amongst my extended family as they were Trump supporters. The podunk town I live in in northern Missouri sports Confederate battle flags. We are in a mess.

Lauraine Garten Now... Imagine what you're feeling, perpetuated for 400 years. That's the black experience. My mother has a little bit of fear in her heart everytime my brother & I leave the house. My sister has 4 daughters of her own, and I'm sure she shares your sentiments. The thing is the reason Black and other non-white Americans seem so unbothered, and the reason comedians make jokes at the expense of White Americans Reaction to the current political landscape is because we've seen it all before. Go ask my 92 year old grandmother if times are harder now than living in the Jim Crow South. Ask my 57 year old mother who was born in 1959 was it better when she couldn't drink from the same water fountain and had to attend a segregated school. Ask my uncles who fought in Vietnam were times better when they had to sit on the back of the bus and got served out the backdoor of restaraunts. My guess is they won't have the same answer that this survey suggest. The white American Experience bubble is beginning to burst, and that comfort and peace of mind has began to erode. And it's a shock to the system because as a whole White America has never felt that struggle. And now you're beginning to feel how the rest of America has always felt. I don't say this to pick on you in particular, just to anyone feeling that all of a sudden times are worst than ever. I want them to keep in mind that this country has seen much darker days, and they weren't as long ago as people try to make them seem.

Kyle, I hear you and I take no offense. I do defend my concerns about my daughters because women have been the target of oppression since time began, regardless of race. That being said, the black experience is one I have only seen from the outside. My step-dad, a black man who fought in Korea and had to come home to segregation, has told me of the horrific treatment he endured. My bi-racial granddaughters are always on my mind as I worry about how they will be treated and how much time I would serve in prison for beating the holy shit out of anyone who tried to hurt them. Honestly, I want to see the country come together and fix this but, as the comments on this thread show, there is something very dangerous going on here. I know that historically, this country has always been a shithole. "Land of the free and home of the brave" is bullshit and anyone who knows anything about the true history of this country, the government and most of its people can see that freedom is a pipedream. I know times have been worse but it saddens and frightens me that it could get much worse. I can feel a major upheaval coming. This is why I fear from my daughters and granddaughters. Women are always horribly abused in conflict as the spoils of war.

Are you concerned about how a man, who is supposed to represent us, is taking pot shots on social media that could bring about a nuclear conflagration? I live in Canada I am not stressed about Government or Health Care. I am stressed out about how much work I do each week though. Our minimum wage just went up to 14. It will be interesting how that plays out here

The funny thing is that overall nothing has really gotten worse statistically speaking, as most areas are stagnant while a few have trended toward the positive, yet it seems like the perception trends more negative each year. I feel like there is more depth to this puzzle than people, such as TYT, are considering.

My point was that most of the issues the US is facing have been around for quite a while now, and while a few are getting worse, like wealth disparity and infant mortality rates, there are many more stats that are remaining unchanged or trending positive. Basically, I guess I was attempting to illustrate that the world is not ending and that society is still progressing, yet perception says differently and I believe this is the true question worth investigating from this story.

Vee K. More than happy to lift some worry off of your shoulders. There are efforts to increase the rhinoceros population especially the javan rhino. There are dedicated people working around the clock on this and it will take time until we see the rewards of these actions. What I could tell you from what I know being of Yemeni ancestry we have daggers which we call jambiya and the handle used to be made with rhino horn and to an extent still is. But there has been efforts to decrease poaching of rhinos for this business and now most of these daggers are not made with rhino horns. This sounds irrelevant but it was a large reason for poaching rhinos in Africa and now it has been substantially minimized. So people are becoming more aware and doing more about it all over the world. Peace and love

I think we all, most of us, assume that there are checks and balances that prevent the kind of damage to government programs that we're seeing now. Those checks and balances have been eroded. Social support systems are being undermined. No wonder stress levels are increasing.

Hell , when Bush came into office the nation was in the Black. 911 and the resulting conflicts and insane military spending under two consecutive administrations and the debt clock has exceeded the GDP. Now Trump continues to march right in the same direction and the debt clock speeds up. Oh , well. At least Hillary is not running the show.
