Why Americans don't use WhatsApp (and why that's a Problem)

Around 58 million people in my home country Germany use the messenger WhatsApp. The app has replaced what once used to be the SMS text message: almost everyone who owns a smartphone can also be reached via the WhatsApp messenger. But in the USA things are different: Meta's app never really caught on here - even though it was an American invention. And this development also brings some problems with it.

Segregation and discrimination are embedded in American history and culture. It's as if this unplanned segregation based on the colour of your text message was willingly embraced and glorified by American young generation who doesn't have permission to openly discriminate on the basis of ethnicity.

I live in Europe and iphone uses here simply accept that they have to have Whatsapp and maybe 1-2 other messaging apps on their phone, because they know most people don't have iphones, and Android users don't like regular SMS. Iphone users here can't get away with being discriminatory against Android users, because they'd have to lose touch with like 70% of their friends and family.

So weird that android as a reputation of being a "poor person" OS despite flagship Samsungs etc. being just as expensive as iPhones. My friends are all stuck in the apple ecosystem meanwhile I'm out here with my free Spotify premium, free KZfaq premium, emulating games, installing apps outside the store, having expandable storage, and a better camera, despite my phone costing about half of what they paid for theirs. I really do not get the appeal of paying more for a less functional product and then having a superiority complex about it. It's just tribalism, pure and simple.

As an European I see it this way : 1) Americans don't travel so much abroad, so they do not need to spend a lot on international phonecalls. 2) Market behaviour: They tend to use the default app for anything they do. Like : the default browser, the default mapping service, and so on. 3) Unlimited text messages even for the cheapest plans. They basically send short messages. 4) iPhone marketshare. In the USA, iPhone is over 60% meanwhile in Europe is 25%. That means that features like iMessage and Facetime, sending large files, reactions, read receipts are allready built in to the phone. And since 6 of 10 smartphones in USA are iPhones, it is easy to reach someone. In other words if an American goes to Europe, and meets someone over there and wants to resch him/her remember that only 3 out of 10 phones are iPhones. So they will be forced to switch : no free texting, no Facetime, no imessage, no read receipts, no way to send files by the default apps on the iPhone.

SMS is being actively replaced by RMS in the United States, which answers all the problems of SMS. It is being done so seamlessly that most people who use RMS aren't even aware of the changes. Messages are longer, end to end encryption is automatic, full size video and photography is sent between. And there is no ostrization of non RMS users. They merely receive an SMS version. Apple is always about gratuitous snobbery. Android is about interactivity without playing the elite. RMS is the answer. Apple is a despicable company and I will never own an Apple product of any kind. Bullying with overpriced tech is absolutely beyond the pale. We should all hate Apple for this.

The key thing that you’re overlooking is that other doubted joined out of necessity. If you’re paying for messaging and Americans damn near get it free, why would we be incentivized to use a third party messenger? Why would an (American) iPhone use a third party app when they get the best experience with iMessage? You can’t understand it because you were forced to use third party apps. Because there is no other reason to use third party apps, many Americans don’t have a reason to seek them out. Now Apple is allowing rcs, there’s less reason to use other apps.

WhatsApp isn't good, I don't like how due to it's network effects it's essentially become a social requirement to exist in Europe. However many of its alternatives like Telegram have their own issues (although I personally prefer Telegram). But having a service which most people can use for free to communicate is not a bad thing. It's definitely better than say Instagram Directs or as is the case in the US, iMessage.

I think people use WhatsApp for it’s ease of use and the connectivity, not so much about privacy or data. It’s a chatting app anyway, not for serious stuffs. Just ONE app for everything and having the same people and world-wide connections, is unbeatable. It’s easy when you travel, everyone and every country is on WhatsApp. I had an Amazon delivery guy contacted me on WhatsApp in Saudi Arabia and it’s seamless. No change of phone number or sim, etc. it can be run on PC too. Having group chats keep information and updates easy or group video chats seamless and organised in one place. And having ‘business WhatsApp’ over personal keep everything compartmentalised but not separated. I use iPhone, but haven’t use the SMS for more than 15 years. No one does here.

Yup, If you reliably need to contact someone SMS is used all of the time because you know for a fact the recipient can accept it. Friends may have a snapchat group, particular subsets of people use it. FB messanger is people whos invested all their social and contacts in the FB universe but young people have been turned off FB for a couple of years now, if not a decade. SMS RCS is the future, let us laugh about the time when everyone had a dozen different messaging apps on their devices, it was dumb.

I find it more interesting that WhatsApp has become the preferred method of messaging outside the US. It’s had loads of privacy issues in the past and is owned by Meta which hasn’t had a great track record. I don’t really see any unique features WhatsApp has over other messaging platforms. So it surprises me that it’s still so popular and other messaging apps haven’t managed to compete with it.

still dont understand why people buy iphones, they work good thats a fact, but the price card is way to high, they are missing apps because apple does not allow those apps due to revenue, and if you get locked out of icloud and dont have a receipt of your purchase you have an expensive brick. in the netherlands i know people use iphones as well but most company's uses android as it has more freedom, and you can actually become admin (root) of your phone, while apple jailbreak is not giving you root as android does, you can still be locked out of your phone if apple decides to do so. but to each there own, use what you like and just install something like whatsapp (dont recommend due to privacy) or Telegram (what i do recommend due to privacy).

Even putting aside Android device to Apple price comparisons, Apple tech & phone gear has always been seen to be cheaper in the USA compared to the cost of living or average salaries, than in the UK, & possibly in EU also. In other words, Apple has been ok with price-gouging outside of the US. Hence a bigger take-up of Android devices outside the US. Apple might argue it's connected with exchange rates etc but that of course is crap

Messaging is the one field where I am not frugal on my phone. Why? Because there's always a risk of one service dying. Remember the times when WhatsApp was down? I switched to Telegram or SMS messaging. Does my carrier have no signal in a certain area? Simple, I go to the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot and message people on Messenger or WhatsApp etc. So besides the usual apps that most people use or that I have used all the time, I also have an XMPP client (Conversations), a Matrix client (both XMPP and Matrix are decentralized platforms, just like email) and Briar - which is an app that allows you to communicate via direct Wi-Fi or even Bluetooth.

I was being left out of the Facetime and Iphone videos being a Android user. I kind of agree with your FB argument, but Meta does not tie WhatsApp to the FB and Instagram platforms. There are Android hacks for getting Facetime. I never had one work more than 20-30 seconds before failing. The problem with that is, for me to see if it's improved I have to beg a Iphone user to play along to try. Getting a Iphone video clip via messaging results in something the size of stick of gum and resolution that looks like 120P. Whatsapp just works. Apple keeps the good stuff like messaging and Facetime in their ecosystem to keep users from escaping. Anyone focusing on colored bubbles has issues.
