California’s definition of assault weapons includes specific models such as the AK and Colt AR-15 series in addition to guns with assaultive as opposed to defensive features, including semiautomatic centerfire rifles with the capacity for a detachable magazine and either a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the gun, a thumbhole stock, a folding or telescoping stock, a grenade or flare launcher, a flash suppressor, or a forward pistol grip

Actually, they're half right here. The Armalite 15 WAS originally intended for military applications and was a new approach- substituting ammunition capacity for firepower. The bullet is extremely light, far less powerful than previous military rifles. The tradeoff was the individual bullets weighed far less, allowing a soldier to carry much more ammunition. Data form previous wars showed that for each soldier killed, over a thousand bullets were fired on average. Well over. The original Armalite 15 WAS also full auto. For a VERY brief time after the rifle was adopted it was still the AR 15, until the powers that be got around to redesignating it the M16. At that point the AR15 ceased to exist as a military rifle. This is NOT the same rifle as the AR15 that is currently the most popular civillian rifle in the United States. The modern Armalite 15 is identical in appearance and basic functionality but lacks the ability to shoot fully automatic. This means it's essentially nothing special. there's nothing that sets it apart from any other .223cal rifle. But it actually WAS originally intended for military applications. Before the one unique property of assault rifles was removed from it, if course.

They use the M4. Every single part is interchangeable to the corresponding civilian Ar-15. It is the same rifle but has select fire(Full auto). There is no other difference. Barrel lengths, butt stocks and everything are just as interchangeable. You can buy the exact configuration of rifle from several places some of the companies literally ship the same rifles out to the military. Especially if you get into KA and their line of rifles like the SR-25. In other words yes they use Ar-15s they just call them M4s. Specifically some set ups you can even buy as a package directly from the same manufacturers that ship the exact same rifle out to the military but remove two parts and exchange one out for civilians which only removed it’s automatic capability. This is coming from a 2A full supporter this is just a dead statement that comes from a lot of people on the right that isn’t really true. The statement is that the Ar-15 was NOT made FOR the military. It was made for civilians. But adopted by the military later on in Vietnam. Eugene stoner had also designed various other rifles before this. It’s just another gun.

I think the bigger question is why is something that has been available to civilians since the 1960’s now become such a huge hot button issue? These mass shootings are a new trend and clearly correlate the same time as social media becoming apart of all these young people’s lives. Mental health is clearly playing into this

It's called population density. Data from Europe and the US shows that at roughly ~86 people per square mile gun regulations drastically decrease gun deaths from both shootings and suicides. Below that they have little to no effect. We also had two periods were these style of weapons were banned. Which again drastically decreased the number of mass shootings which upticked as soon as these bans were either over turned or lapsed. States were also free to regulate firearms however they wanted from the founding of the country up until the two cases in the 2000s, DC v Heller and McDonald v Chicago. All gun deaths jumped 17% across the nation after these two rulings. Which includes, homicide, accidental shootings, and sucides by firearm.

@@totallynottrademarked5279the issue with guns is that most violence does not come from mass shootings Obviously not trying to downplay mass shootings as they are horrible events that hurt 10’s even 100’s of people’s lives. The main issue however is small-scale crimes like robberies or break-ins turning into shootings because of how readily available guns are to just about anyone Also “banning” certain guns would mean that there are still guns out there but now they’re unregulated and can be easily sold to criminals, gang members and the mentally unwell Mass shootings are an issue of the people not the weapons, I mean do you think someone sound of mind would go shoot up a school or mall? No they wouldn’t People who say guns are the issue are getting mad at their food for giving them food poisoning All we need are stricter background checks and more mental healthcare especially when it comes to religious communities that see mental health as “fake” or “just being lazy”

The mental illness blame game really bothers me, because what exactly is the end goal? Ban anyone with depression from having a gun? Revoking what you claim to be a constitutional right from a group of people based off mental illness? Having more safety regulations would be non-discriminatory, and help put the breaks on people getting firearms in a mentally unstable state of mind. Having more firearm safety education would also help. And yes, banning certain guns would be a non-discriminatory way to approach the issue.

@@xrcassassin3544 gladly Right of the bat he says that the AR-15 "was designed for military service", which is false, the AR was designed for the civilian market. He is also pointing at an M16, which was the main American service rifle during Vietnam. He later points at a SCAR but refers to it as an AR-15. Labeling non ARs as ARs is already a bad look on his reputability (not that he had any to begin with since literally the first thing he said was false). He then claims later that it was banned due to the Assault Weapons Ban, which would technically be false since the AR doesn't classify as an assault rifle since it lacks select fire. His last incorrect point was about the 11 shootings, the last shooting he showed that said the shooter used "2 AR style rifles" is false, one of the 2 was a 9mm chambered carbine that doesn't even look like an AR. The fact they lied about there being 2 leads me to believe that the media has lied about other cases claiming they used "AR style rifles" just because it was a gun without wood furniture. That's everything he got wrong, sweetie. See the importance of firearms education?

@@lonewolf0712 the only thing you're right about is the 2 ar15s. One was a keltech and the other was in fact an ar15. The ar15 was specifically designed for the military in 1954 by Eugene stoner who admitted the ar10 but the military denied it due to wanting a smaller caliber than the m14(.308) so he made the ar15. Beat out the m14 in military trials in 57 and colt purchased the designs in 59. It was used as a standard service rifle in vietnam in 62 and until November of 63 when the m16 was first created. Secondly the ar15 was manufactured and sold fully automatic from the day it was creates to 1984 when the colt patent expired. The ban occurred in 86 and yes did heavily effect ar15s. But because ar15s are modular you can just change out the parts limited in the ban and still have an ar15. You claim gun education is so important but you don't seem to know anything about the firearm in question sweetie.

So hear me out, I feel like the AR's involvement in shootings is just because of how common place the ARs are among American gun owners. It's like saying "cars are the most common occurring element in traffic related injuries". So, it's not necessarily an "AR-15" problem, it's a problem with the proliferation of firearms in general; and the lack of training and other requirements in order to get and own a firearm in the first place. Consider Switzerland, which has a firearm ownership rate which can be compared to the States (28 guns per 100 Swiss civilians, vs 120 guns per 100 US civilians), yet doesn't have nearly as many public shootings as the states, because every man has mandatory military training, and if you misuse your gun or do something that can disqualify from owning it, you get it taken away, which is just the Swiss culture towards owning firearms. 220 people died from firearms in Switzerland in 2022, 200 of those were self-inflicted (a rate of 2.5 people per 100,000 people, in the US it's 7 per 100,000). Whereas the rate of homicide (justifiable, criminal, or accidental) in 2022, was 0.137 per 100,000 people in Switzerland, and in the US it was 4.054 per 100,000 people. So it's not an issue with specific firearms in particular, but rather it's an issue with the availability, and lack of training and oversight. It just so happens that in America, the American weapons manufacturer Armalite happens to have the biggest presence in the American firearms ownership, and therefore has the largest rate of participating in American firearm crime statistics.

I feel like there needs to be a difference between, civilian guns and militarized guns. Civilian guns are like pistols, and only have 5-6 person magazine. To achieve these guns, just do what is required already, along with a few extra tests every few years. For militarized guns, you either need to have served for an entire year, or have received approval by both a therapist, and a weapons expert. You are required to take a weapons test every other year, and the law enforcement has approval to enter your premises JUST FOR THE WEAPON. You would also be required to take the weapons on to a shooting range, and need to show an officer of the law where you are keeping the firearm. If crime rates via firearms lowers, then maybe there can be some adherence to be less strict. Just my thoughts though

The gov lied about guns being the most common thing killing kids, which is true if they consider 18 and 19 year olds as kids lol. Regardless guns are meant to defend oneself or one’s country. Switzerland allows you to buy semi auto weapons with less restrictions than the U.S. and they allow you to get fully automatic weapons through another process (which we aren’t allowed those in the U.S. even, unless if you’re a company. Although back in the day you could by automatic weapons in the catalogs without any background checks, I wonder why there were no shootings back then). Yes, an AR 15 can kill more people but when you look at crimes statistics, it turns out that the simple handgun kills the most people. not to mention the actual cause of most gun deaths in America. Does anybody know the thing that causes the most gun deaths in the United States? Ar15s were used in 6 of the 10 deadliest shootings in American history alone but you still don't see any problem with free access to a weapon literally designed for the military.

I love it when people say it was designed for the military when I have ad clippings for the ar-15 from the early 50s and the m-16 wasn’t really incorporated into the military until Nam. AR-15s are used because they're popular and easy for shooters to get (both legally and illegally). Most school shooters get them from people they know who don't secure them properly. Despite the rapid fire rate, AR-15s are relatively low powered compared the next most popular, non-semiauto rifle. Since most shooters are opportunists, banning semiauto rifles just turns an active shooter into a sniper with a perch and much better bullets, making them harder to find and stop. That's assuming you could find and seize a number of guns that would take the ATF a literal 600 years to collect if they're going twice the rate they are right now. Banning guns is a logistical impossibility in a country the size of the US with more guns than people. We need universal background checks, mandatory (tax funded) training and certification, and laws that close loopholes that let abusers plead down domestic violence and irresponsible gun owners escape an accessory charge if their gun was used by a shooter and not reported stolen. Gun owners need to be responsible and if you can't train with and keep track of your weapon, you don't deserve to own one. None of these measures curtail the second amendment and they don't require magic to work. The AR-15 is not some super weapon or even particularly unique and even if you manage to wish it away, people will continue to die because shooters will be just as, if not more, dangerous.

No talking out your ass. AR-10 was developed for military contracts, but due to low interest it was sporterized for civilian use. It had brown Bakelite furniture to keep it light weight. The AR-15 was developed to compete for the military's desire for an intermediate cartridge. The sporterized version was sold concurrently while the military tested the xm16. The military designation of m16 has absolutely nothing to do with armilite's number scheme. The M15 rifle was a variant of the m14 rifle designated the m15 Squad Automatic Weapon, it had a pistol grip and an integrated bipod. Bullshit isn't going to fight bullshit.

Ahhh yes. The folding 9mm pistol carbine is now an “AR-style” weapon

The shooter had a sub 2000, an ar, and some kind of 9mm handgun.

To be fair it's from a news article, reporters will see a musket and call it an AR.

The shooter used a Keltec pistol calibre carbine. I think they might have also had an AR ? I believe a S&W sport II.

Reporters also seem to think most of these rifles can go full “auto”.

@@jacobsanchez9815 none really can, if I'm not mistaken in America to actually own full auto guns a person has to go for more testing and later pay taxes on those guns. Most military styled weapons are usually fixed for civilian use so basically automatic features are removed

@@kaisermarxistdixie6842 you can own a full auto gun as a civilian, but there an extremely limited amount that are legal due to some ban of new full autos being imported since the 80’s. What most ignorant people don’t understand is a legal full auto a very rare and expensive so this concept that all these “evil” guns is just a exaggeration to scare the public.

I mean, those shooters didn't buy the guns. They stole em or bought em illegally. So banning doesn't really do anything😅
