I saw it opening day, and the Daniels came after the credits for a short QnA!!! It was super cool! They described this movie as “Daughter goes on reddit and gets depressed. Mom doesn’t understand so she goes on reddit and also gets depressed.”

As a gay kid of immigrant parents, I can tell you, it rings true for other nationalities as well. Evenlyn is SO much like my Mom, right down to "you are getting fat" when she felt like she needed to say something that was too hard to vocalize and feeling restricted from developing her many talents because of her everyday life; and my Dad negotiated enough like Waymond, around the stress and snippiness with all the humor and diversion he could muster. It's uncanny. They came from Holland, but same dynamic. This wasn't a movie for me. It was therapy. Thank you Daniels for showing them land on their feet through all the chaos of everything, all the noise ... everything.

Wah, as a Chinese living now in Netherlands, I feel so happy that this movie resonate with not just Chinese community

@TravelerPat I think this is partially what Stephanie was trying to get at- because of the homogeneity of the people who had a platform to tell stories, it was easy for people like me (the child of Asian immigrants) with a difference experience attribute my experience to being "othered." But as people who look like me get to tell their stories and hear that people from _all_ walks of life relate to those stories, it breaks down the race-based barriers & prejudgments we've developed. Lol- I've definitely used the parents from Everybody Loves Raymond to describe my parents' marriage, but I couldn't relate to their dynamic with Raymond.

@TravelerPat Clearly, you have a lot of opinions about this movie, but overall, you seem to be missing a simple point. Asians ARE different, yet we are the same. So what do you propose? No Asian representation in mainstream entertainment? Sure, this movie could have been about a white family...as SO many other movies are. The fact that it wasn't, is part of what is remarkable here. Your own sensitivities and insecurities may be blinding you to this. I'm not a psychologist, so I may be wrong, but after reading all that you wrote, and having grown up here in southern California, watching television and movies since the mid-70s, as an Asian-American, I can tell you that WE NEED more Joy Luck Clubs, Crazy Rich Asians and Everything Everywhere All At Onces. CHANGE can only happen when there IS change. To your point about reinforcing stereotypes...This happens organically and naturally within our OWN cultures! The fact that Evelyn says "Your getting fat" is a cultural stereotype because there is truth, but not only in Asian cultures. Read the other comments here. Part of what makes this movie resonate with so many, is it goes beyond Asian culture, which Michelle Yeoh states, and she's right! There situations and dynamics which this movie addresses that go beyond Asian culture that are cross-cultural and more universal. I can think of one situation that I thought of while watching the movie and asked "laundromat...ok, that's stereotypical. I know many situations where a family of one ethnicity runs a business not typically associated with their ethnic group. For example, if the family business was a bakery, car wash, or something that wasn't so historically stereotypical as a Chinese family owning a restaurant or laundromat....but anyway, again, that's missing the big-picture, main point I stated above. Anyway, just thought I'd respond and share my perspective.

I just thought that it would've been interesting also, if the family business was a BAGLE shop! 😂

As an Asian dude, I love love love love love FUCKING LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH. Not just because it's an Asian story, not just because it's an immigrant story, but because it's a great STORY.

I saw this over the weekend, and I truly believe it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. While Michelle Yeoh was definitely the reason for why I had to see this, I was blown away by Stephanie Hsu's acting. She NAILED it! She was that good!

idk why but Ke Huy's character struck such a chord with me, the whole time he was on screen I was emotional. His presence was just so pure and intentional, I felt it deeply

Having watched the movie just two days ago and several interviews with the actor, I believe that his pure and intentional demeanor is genuine and natural. He exudes extreme gratitude, having endured a long period of rejection and thirst. His authenticity and sincerity are remarkable and inspiring. I sincerely hope that his career continues to flourish, and that he remains true to his character. I have a strong feeling that his essence will persevere, and that he will continue to impress audiences with his authenticity and talent.

Holy crap, he did "Turn Down For What"? That snaps right into place for someone who then (co) created Swiss Army Man and this movie. Entirely insane but entirely awesome.

This movie was amazing enough already, but the representation is great. I am not Chinese, but I am an Asian American daughter to immigrant parents. I could relate to Joy and saw my own mother in Evelyn. Love this movie!

A24 has become my favorite movie studio just because they are the few companies that are making completely unique and original movies and television shows and they’re not afraid to prioritize diverse stories. Big fan of a lot of their recent films, especially Everything Everywhere, All At Once!

I'm M'sian American and have experienced racism in M'sia from Malays and more subtly from the Chinese. I loved M'sia and am ethnic Indian. America is a paradigm shift of meritocracy. I've been told that ethnic Indians aren't Asians which is stupid. We're classified as Asians by the official US Census Bureau and Pew Research. I'm proud of my M'sian and Indian roots and find America much more open and meritorious than ethnocentric Asian societies. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d6ygeambqquzYIU.html
