Wanna know why all those vintage analog EQs still matter?
Yes, they introduce harmonic distortion, but way more importantly: Their EQ curves are unique and far away from what we dial in on any modern digital EQ! Time to use our ears again!
Watch German producer Kristian Kohle (Powerwolf, Aborted, Electric Callboy) using all the EQ bands on a double #Pultec to make a snare sound massive!

Classic EQs vs Pro-Q! What's your opinion?

Really love both, but using a classic eq can be really nice, when you can't see the waves and you just use your ears, that can be really cool too!

I like the Pultec on the mix buss trick from the Dennis Ward course where you set it and mix right into it. Andrew Scheps does it as well. But my fav trick I learned in the Dan Weller course which is using the Lindell 80 channel just to add some sub frequencies on the mix buss. it also adds a unique analog color to the sound just by turning it on with everything set to zero as well. My go to eq is the Kirchoff which emulates a variety of analog eqs right along with a Pro-Q style interface like the Pultec, the Maag for some "air" and several more.🤘😀🤘

Classic! When I went to audio school a teacher gave us a task, to mix a song with one type of eq and one type of compressor. It made everything click

I use ProQ and Fruity Parametric EQ 2 for general-purpose EQing. I also use Gullfoss to fix odd frequency bumps in the mix buss and Ozone's MatchEQ for, well, tone matching. I also use the Black Rooster Pultec clone with the aforementioned "trick" setting but I only leave it on and mix through it.

Spot on. I typically start ssl eq on anything for general tone shaping eq. Kirchhof eq comes after if there is any specific problem to deal with.

Spot-on as always, brother! :) I'm still using that Tube-Tech trick on the kicks that you showed us a year ago and the EQP-WA on my rack is going to get some more use in the near future too. I love Pro-Q but there are times you really need other stuff, especially when that "stuff" involves coloring the sound or otherwise making broad strokes with some neat boost/cut combos. I'm a big fan of Pultec-y things for that.

I used EQs from Fabfilter, Waves, Plugin Alliance, TDR but now I tend to just use stock Cubase EQ. Recently I got Softube Console 1 and learning to use only ears and hands, it's a nice feeling.

Over the last couple years I've transitioned away from Pro-Q and really only use it as subtractive. I prefer analog emulations for most sources, and as you said -- use your ears. It's more fun and creatively inspiring.

I do orchestral mixes. Usually I use fabfilter because it's visual, and then it helps me to identify muddy frequencies by ear and eyes, and then I use neve eqs to apply the frequencies identified before, because I feel that the neve eqs have a little bit more a specific sound.

Totally agree ! I use the Tube Tech all the time, it's an amazing Plugin ! The same with the SSL-J Console from Plugin Alliance. Especially for boosting frequencies, I get stuff much more quicker done with the SSL-J and the TubeTech and you have to use your ears more instead of just ,, looking '' I also use the Pro-Q3 but it depends. Most of the time for more surgical cuts or something similar.

All you need for EQ plugins are: 1) for tracks/mix bus: Q432 (Kush Audio's version, etc.) [subtractive-additive EQ] 2) for mastering : TOMO Audiolabs LISA [mastering EQ so analog so pro....better than Michelangelo Hendyamps EQ, AMEK 200/250 EQs, EQ1 and Curve Bender mastering EQs]

I used to have the exact problem you described in the beginning: mixing more with my eyes than my ears. Since then I have become an avid user of SSL and Pultec EQ plugins, and they've made mixing much more fun. And the results also sound a lot better. Now please excuse me while I watch the Bob Marlette course! I meant to do that a while ago but I got hooked on other courses on the way... Thanks for the video & viele Grüße aus Schleswig-Holstein!

People underestimate the importance of workflow and inspiration. Let's say pro q 3 or Kirchoff can replicate any eq curve ever (lets forget saturation for a sec). Yes i can replicate it, but it's extra steps and i might not even come up with the idea for that curve. But when i grab an analog eq or emulation with those curves baked in, it's not just that it does something pro q 3 can't. It's that my way of tackling the sound will differ from the getgo and will result in me making different decisions. Same with actual analog gear and amps. I don't care that much if a plugin can replicate it exactly. What it won't replicate is that i make different decisions when i use those tools and they inspire me in a different way and that's what i'm after

I always like using the Pro-Q to subtract and maybe filter. For adding EQ or just adding character, I would prefer to use those classic EQs, like SSL, Neve, or anything else so I'm not just looking at a frequency analyzer when I'm boosting, I'm hearing what I'm boosting. I use Pro-Q to subtract, and even sometimes, the frequency analyzer does help me find it faster or I boost to find what I'm looking for and then subtract.

I've been meaning to try more analog modelling instead of my fabfilter centric comfort zone. Plus I feel like if I was ever blessed enough to spend time in a "real" studio filled with outboard gear it might feel less intimidating!

The UA Pultec eq’s are far and away the ones I use the most. I find myself getting into trouble with pro-q by over doing it to the point where it just causes problems. The pultec help me to sweeten the natural sound of the drums where I’ll eventually use the fabfilter to mod the drum so much it’s unrecognizable from the original and that isn’t what usually serves the song the best.

This is kind of how I see the value of out of the box equipment, even if it doesn’t technically sound as good. It’s that the WAY I use it is so much different.

i use the Q3 for clean up work, because it is nice and surgical. for all the tonal ajustments i like to use analoge emulations, and even hardware, because i dont like to see the EQ curve, and ich can work better, and trusting my ears

i think both have a place...depending on the track you are working on as well as the "feel" desired each can achieve different things...in my opinion any way 😄😄depending on what im working on (and given the fact that ive only paid for a Reaper DAW and a Plugin Alliance SSL channel strip...all others are free) i find myself often reaching for the TDR Nova equalizer

Digital EQs can get you into trouble really fast, analogue style EQs will always sound more smooth and natural imo. Both have their place, but one is more of a broad spectrum effect, the other a precise surgical tool. I think something like the Pro Q shouldn't really be heard when used correctly.

🍻 Prost.
