Thank you for this song. I have had trouble forgiving someone in my family because of something that happened (nothing traumatic but still bad) and I would have really violent dreams about them (which is not like me) and I never knew why..I think It was because I had unresolved issues with them and never addressed it...I have never found a song that addressed my situation so clearly Thank you dodie❤❤

the same thing happened to me! my ex was incredibly manipulative and gaslit me and would do things to me that i didn’t want to do. and so over time i fell out of love with him, honestly it never was love. i broke up with him over text, not my finest moment imo, but i thought it was fine. and yet a year later, he still talks crap about me and is waiting for my current boyfriend and i to break up. “no use getting angry at the way that you’re wired” hits pretty hard
@maggieo1683
@maggieo1683 3 жыл бұрын
@@gud189 I don't think you need to feel bad about having broken up with him over text. If he was manipulative, you didn't owe him a decent in-person breakup, which would have been the right thing to do in a meaningful relationship. And the fact he's still talking shit about you and guilt tripping you is not okay, and it says a lot. It sounds like there are a lot of red flags with this guy. But like I said, you don't owe him anything. I went through something similar with my ex girlfriend. Frankly, I think you need to tell him to stay the fuck away from you, and dont be gentle about it. You shouldn't treat everyone like that, and its understandable if you feel bad about doing that because you're actually a decent person. But you shouldn't take his bullshit another second. You need to make him understand you don't want him bothering you anymore. You deserve better.

@@RumerPriestly sorry about that, I should have been more direct. This song is about trauma, right there in the lyrics. It's kind of really inappropriate to ask for the details about someone's trauma, it can be really harmful especially if you're a complete stranger. Maybe, don't ask or demand to know the "hidden meanings" of things.
@RumerPriestly
@RumerPriestly 4 жыл бұрын
@@OcyTaviAh I mean, apology accepted, although you've done nothing to me! I still think what you're saying comes off as pretty unkind though. Music and lyrics are, always have been, and always will be sources of great interest, intrigue, and fascination with fans. That's why things like 'Genius', and lyric videos exist. It's not inappropriate at all to ask about the meaning of a song, Dodie has made this public, has spoken about it in interviews, has made a video about it now. We don't know what it was specifically that was said or done when she was younger, so it's hardly as though we're delving into her deepest secrets and laying them bare. Simply explaining that it's about something traumatic happening to her in her childhood, and the person who did it to her having no idea how badly it affected the rest of her life, is succinct, doesn't expose anything hurtful, and gives Dana her answer. There's not really anything to be offended over here, my man. Untwist

I am not entirely sure if I understand Guiltless, but I relate it to my own experience. My dad often tells at me for my stupid mistakes (I have no common sense) and we're not very close. I feel like he doesn't really know me. Also, he's really inconsiderate and cares only about himself. So I feel like we're strangers and he doesn't realize that our relationship is bad. I think Dodie wrote it to be more complex, but I love it and it's beautiful. Dodie, you're awesome.

Pretty sure I don't REALLY get Guiltless because my interpretation doesn't fit all the lines but it reminds me of me, forgiving people far to easily or not even bringing up that they hurt me because I don't feel like it's worth it even though it should be. Especially "I'm not bitter, I'm just tired, no use getting angry at the way that you wired" and "and I could never let you knowWWW, you'd never get it", that lines make me feel so understood 💛

This song hit hard for me. I have ptsd from trauma when I was 3. And the line “I’m not bitter, I’m just tired. No use getting angry at the way that you’re wired” just describes how I feel so brilliantly. I love you dodie.

The classical piece is Bolero, by Ravel, which is actually thematically on point for this song, as it’s the same phrase that repeats over and over throughout the 15-17 minutes of the performance. It doesn’t grow or change, just has a new instrument added each time from an incredibly quiet start to a full orchestra. There’s a great RadioLab episode that talks about Ravel, Bolero, art, mental illness and dementia, for anyone interested.

I started therapy this year, but had to take a break because I didn't feel in the right headspace to unpack it all. Thank you, Dodie, for writing such a beautiful song that speaks to such a familiar experience. ALSO! I think Rufus Wainwright uses Bolero as well in his song Oh What a World. One of my favorites :)

I couldn't say it myself because it's so much detail crammed into a song and it's a whole experience that I'm so glad Dodie could put into words. And this video talking about her writing process just calms me down for some reason. It's even more special after seeing her in Vancouver a few days ago!

DODIE I didn't get to watch you when you performed live on TV but I found a recording of it, and you did incredible. This was the video before something beautiful, not something awful or wrong. You're so amazingly talented and we all love and support you, even if you had messed up. But you didn't. And we all knew you wouldn't. And now we can come back and appreciate you instead of hassling you like you feared. Cheers. xx ❤
