This recently happened with my family, my dad was in the hospital with COPD, & I had to take time off of work because well he is my dad., and I wanted to be with him. So I made sure I have emergency money so I could take off work without actually losing money.

Boy, is that the truth! About a month before COVID exploded, my pantry was kinda empty. I was even thinking of shopping weekly to have fresh stuff for each week of cooking. Thankfully, I was able to really stock up before things got bad, started freezer meals, and sailed thru isolation. So glad I got on top of it before we ended up suffering!

Absolutely. Emergency preparedness is an important skill, stocking up to be able to care for yourself and your loved ones and being self sufficient were how this country has thrived for so long. Only now that the majority are no longer self sufficient do things like supply chain issues and inflation carry such a large risk. Preparedness is wise!

I also find it odd that there is such a stigma still against doomsday preppers. We just went through a pandemic and because of some leaders making things like vaccines available in a year or less verses 5, we are coming out of it in 2 years. If a global disruption in global food supplies, as well as the possibility of WW3, and the dollar about to crash, I just find it odd that people even question "doomsday preppers" With that said, I also find it Biblical, and being a wise steward to gather while the gettings good, because throughout history we have seen that that isn't always the case. Then finally, being able to share and bless others without even an extra trip to the store. That is what I find is the most rewarding and the most often used portion of any prepping that I have done. But I love the analogy of car insurance, home insurance and health, but no food insurance.....the one thing that every human needs for existence!

When the first shutdown of the pandemic happened, my then-husband and I ran to the store and bought a bunch of random, shelf-stable ingredients that we don't normally buy. Here I am two years later, divorced, moved, and I still have those ingredients on my shelf with no idea what to do with them. Since the divorce, I've become a prepper. Little by little, I'm learning what works for me and what doesn't. Now, I keep a spreadsheet with 14 days worth of meals planned, and a full list of the ingredients I'll need to buy in order to follow this meal plan for a year. I am steadily working on stocking up on the ingredients, buying a little more than what's needed to follow my plan until my next grocery trip, and stocking up when there's a sale. I currently have enough for 107 days. Given the bad news from Ukraine, and the rising cost of fertilizer, my extended family has also started preparing in case food becomes too expensive, or we have shortages. We've made an agreement that we'll all do what we can, and then help each other out when we need to. I want other people to get ready, too. The more people who are prepared, the better the outcome will be when emergencies do happen.

Smart thinking! I’ve realized I don’t have enough to season my preps, so I’m currently trying to build that. We do eat a lot of some varieties of beans and rice, but some varieties I never cook and I have those taking up space. I figure I can always trade them if we are in a situation. Like hummus, I never eat it but I can make and trade..or just trade it for something someone else has or is growing.

I couldn’t agree more with you, Becky! I have been doing emergency Food prep for about 9 years now and a lot of people laughed at me for doing so until Covid hit! I am trying to be as self sufficient as possible with growing our own veggies for us and our chickens and constantly stocking up my 3 full pantries and half of a double garage full of food grade buckets with dried ingredients! Water was a concern until recently we now have someone come in and dig us a second well with a hand crank! I’d rather be prepared than sorry later! Much love and ty for your videos and insights

This is my dream! We are only about two years into preparedness and I've gotten many things set up, including larger gardens and chickens. However my husband is not on board with the "clutter" that comes with stocking up so I'm currently at a little bit of a pause. Any suggestions on how to keep things put up and out of the main living areas? I have a good sized pantry but it fills up quick when you start adding buckets and bags of dry goods, not to mention animal feed and gardening supplies! I also homeschool my two daughters and that comes with a lot. A hand crank well is on my dream to do list, right after getting goats.

Becky, 69 yr old cancer survivor here. Partially handicapped, but doing well. I have been stocking my freezer for years; getting as many deals as I can. Liked what you said about sharing. Used to cook, and share meals, with an elderly man who lived upstairs until he passed away. Told me many times he appreciated a good home cooked meal. Made him small freezer meals also. Saw his sister when she came to pick up his things. She and her husband lived in NC. She hugged and blessed me for taking good care of him. It was just the right thing to do. Purchased the multi-use grocery bags you suggested to keep your freezer organized; and got them for 2 of my sisters who have freezers. They are wonderful! Thanks for always sharing with us. @@jowhite6547 Those fabric shopping bags. I used these in my freezer for the longest time, but moved up slightly to those fabric toy baskets. Nothing wrong with the bags, but I got tired of going thru floppy bags. The toy baskets have held up several years now, and they come in a variety of sizes. Not poo-pooing her idea, just sharing my experience👍

Thank you for recommending Azure, Becky. You might want to let people know that they do a “drop” in multiple cities where an Azure truck drops your orders off in a central spot in your town. I did my first pickup this morning (Cincinnati, Ohio) and it was great. A local person is the organizer for the timing and he (in our case) emailed everyone with the date and time. I arrived just as the truck pulled up. It takes a bit of time for the unload but it was fun to talk to others who can, grind wheat, preserve, etc. I can give you more detail on the experience if anyone wants to know.

I’m just south of Dayton and crafting my first order. Trying to make sure I’m buying things I actually need. They really have great prices for things that I normally buy and there are limits on beans, pasta etc at the store currently. I’m excited to try it out.

Thank you Becky for these types of videos. I use organic Beet Sugar because I am allergic to cane sugar. I have not been able to buy beet sugar for a few months and when I did find some the cost has been super inflated. I watched your video and it occurred to me I should search for bulk Beet sugar. I just bought 50 lbs thanks to you at a cheaper cost per pound 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

The preper stigma is real even when shopping sometimes… I always buy bulk BUT don’t get to store it for a longer haul yet because I use it with a large family lol what would be someone else’s “hoarding” is just a regular shop for us and gets me nasty looks at the store sometimes 🤷‍♀️ I never judge someone else because I don’t know why they are buying maybe they have 6 kids like us or maybe they just have a good stockpile not for me to judge

Heads up on the vittles vaults- the weights they are marketed as holding are averages based on air filled pet foods. Most of the time they still stack fine with heavier items but when completely full they may start to collapse the one below, so test them out by filling just over halfway and adding more over a few days and always put the heavier items on the bottom. The 40lb holds about 50lbs of flour and the 25lb can hold about 40lbs of rice.

Money saving is the number one for me buying in bulk. When we lived in Puerto Rico I would go shopping every six weeks. I learned to substitute items in recipes and planned meals based on items left in the pantry.

Just to let everyone know, if you go to your local grocery store that decorates cakes chances are they might get their icing in food safe plastic buckets and if you ask they might give you or sell you the buckets cheap. And the gamma lids fit on them.. This can save you quit a bit of money. I have s lot of my staples in the buckets I get.

This is what I do and it’s so great. They’re already food safe, plus it’s reusing an already spent item. Sometimes they have 5 gallon buckets and gamma lids would fit those.

I made inventory lists of everything and am trying my best to get a 3-6 months supply! Today I bought 10 lbs of chicken leg quarters threw them in my roaster. I then took the meat off the bone and put the bones back in to make broth! my next project is food grade buckets! I know we are headed for shortages! love watching your channel for more great ideas!

Nothing wrong with being a prepper.. Im am a prepper. Being responsible for the lives of four kids I always made sure to have a 1 year supply of food medicines, wood for the stove. The first time I had a rabbid raccoon in my back yard trying to get to my chickens I was grateful to have taken classes in gun safety and was able to take care of the problem. Being a prepper is a good thing to me.

Thank you for this video! I agree with everything you said as that is why I started buying in bulk. As a kid, when I wanted to bake, it seemed we were always out of things so now I like to have everything and then some. Also so good to be prepared for job loss or even the transition to a new job. It’s saved our butts several times having extra. My husband is an avid hunter and that is one of the best things we can do for extra meat as well as it being local and humane.

@@lindapier7149 I’ve seen videos of people who store packaged food in low height/long plastic containers under their beds, in plastic bins in their closets, plastic bins covered in a table cloth in their living rooms. It may seem odd, but it can be done to some extent when space issues are right. Blessings to you and yours 💞

The nearest grocery store is 30 miles north OR 30 miles east OR 20 south. I learned 26 years ago when I became a middle of nowhere Central Oregon cattle ranchers wife, best just to stay stocked up....and stay that way. I just bought a milk cow. Chickens up next. Garden on the way. Azure Standard delivers my dry good. With any luck I can avoid town. (Bend)

My favorite comment you mentioned was “buy only what you use”, I also watch frugalfitmom on KZfaq and she came out with a video saying beans and rice is the cheapest, longest shelf life, great resource, ect. So I went and bought like 6 different types of rice and beans… and Guess what… here we are two years later with 6 bags of beans and rice. I never eat beans or rice?!? Why did I go out and buy them. Only buying what you eat is such an important step to building a pantry stock.

I just got myself some food grade 5 gallon buckets and gamma lids for my flour, sugar and rice! I am so glad to have them because they have been stored in my basement up until this point yesterday. Half the time they were in their paper sacks and would get shuffled around and set on the floor next to my shelves and people wouldn’t put them back where they belonged! We were very fortunate that that part of our basement didn’t flood when our pipes had issues this winter. That could have been a lot of food down the drain!

Hoarding is what happens when you are NOT prepared! Because I AM prepared I don't have to run out and buy up all the soup or bread or TP because I already have a good supply at home! It's those with the empty cupboards who are desperate and hoard the food available to them. I don't understand how we have gotten things so backwards.

My siblings do think I go overboard on groceries but, I try to be really aware of the price/oz. Sometimes it is way better to buy a larger amount if it is something you will use. If it is something that will go bad before I can use it, sometimes paying a little more for less is better. I am more able to get through the store being out of something for a period of time than they are. Now the pandemic did make me more aware of staying way ahead on toilet paper 🙃🤣 After 2020, no one is laughing about getting a roll of TP for Christmas!

TIP: when scooping your flour/sugar/oats etc. you will compact your ingredients by scooping with your measuring cup. If you scoop it out with a spoon or scoop and fill your measuring cup that way, you will use slightly less of that ingredient, thus stretching it just a little further. I know we all cook by feel and have our own twist on our recipes, but when times are tough this is a good trick to stretch that flour or whatnot until more is obtainable.

I loved that book. I have it on audible. Thank you for this I also like having a stocked pantry and an just starting to be able to get there again. We were the same here when March 2020 hit. In the last 4 years we have been through drought, fires flooded in twice and the craziness that was 2020 & 2021. I have managed to feed my family even without being able to get out for a few days. Even if it was beans and eggs on homemade bread. We had enough basics to keep us going. It’s a game changer.

I feel that Your personal reasons are valid Becky & know that You are blessed to have the means to make these purchases over time which can be shared with Your Family ; I’m only 1 single 52 yr od woman on Disability so buying bulk isnt fully feasable as one person & being low income!

Start a buying/prepping co-op with 2 or 3 friends. It's fun to pre-assemble meals as a group too! Just remember to skip the Wine until everything is measured haha

I have been getting 2 gallon and 3.5 gallon buckets from Publix bakery for 10 years for free. I stopped by a few weeks back and they told me they were having to reuse the buckets and the icing, etc they used to get in the buckets comes to them in bags now. They also said they had no helium for balloons. Shortages everywhere on everything it seems. Also, there is a really good KZfaq video by JO Q showing how to put the gamma lid on using a small length of 2x4 and your body weight and taking them off with a spoon. Both worked like a charm for me the other day.

Great video! It’s funny, you made fun of preppers and then pretty much described exactly why preppers prepare. It’s not for some zombie apocalypse, but for any emergency that could happen. My mom had cancer when she was 34. We lived on food storage because she had been a prepper, or prepared for emergencies. We grew up with that being the way of life and I continue living like this with our children.

I heard this on a different podcast and use it every time I'm at the store: Two is one, and one is none. If I'm need 1, I buy 2. If I'll use 2, I get 4. Builds the pantry in a super quick and affordable way.

I think the covid lockdown was a prime example. People buying things at the last minute left a lot of people high & dry. Being prepared is the smart thing to do, as you said, food insurance. You are an amazing young woman & I hope & pray it starts a movement, because what would we do if our country became like the Ukraine. Think it can't happen, think again, the Japanese were able to rain hell on Hawaii & Americans didn't even realize it until it was too late. God bless ya'll. 🙋‍♀️😁🙏💜

WAIT A MINUTE 1!!!!!!! I didnt grow up eating alot of variety because my mother was not an exciting cook. I am 64 now and just recently discovered beans and rice (ALONG WITH MANY OTHER FOODS TRIED} I let myself explore foods- I now would not dream of going without it on purpose

You do awesome videos...I always learn something new from you. And I say that as someone who cans, freezes, raises all our own meat, and grows the majority of our vegetables and some fruits. Being prepared and preserving food is not hoarding or fear mongering. It is a way of live that used to be the norm and now is coming back. Homesteading is about taking care of yourselves, family and friends, and it brings a lot of joy to our family when we can share our blessings with those around us. Keep up the awesome videos! Everyone really meeds to prep, prep, and more prep. Thing are going to get bad and supplies are really going to get scarce. The less supplies, the higher the price. Get what you can every time you can. Great info Becky. It makes sense. Bulk foods, costco, azure, sam’s club or even restaurant supply stores. If you like to shop, otherwise order from companies online.

Becky, I got a few of those 60lb pet vaults last year from Amazon. Although they say they are stackable and rated for 60 lbs, when I put about 50s stacked, the lower ones started collapsing a bit. You might want to just store your lighter stuff on top level, and only go 2 high. I just wanted to mention it, so you don't warp your bins, like I did. I love your channel and Congratulations on almost getting to 250k and so quickly. You definitely deserve it.😊❤

Thank you for the video series! I get my bulk dry goods (oats, flour, sugar, etc) and canning jars/lids mostly at WinCo. I can still find bulk chicken leg quarters for $0.63 a pound at Walmart. I know its not organic, which I prefer, but good enough to keep body and soul together and also easily turned into "canned" cat food when my fuzzy overlords demand! 😊 I just found a drop point for Azure within walking distance of my house so will start using that as I need to restock. Much love from Oklahoma! Edit to add: don't forget to check your local restaurant supply store for bulk items too. Mine allow the public to purchase too without any extra fees. I get my potatoes in 50 pound bags to can and eat fresh and huge bags of carrots for the same thing. They have great sales so when they have greens on sale I get a lot for dehydrating. The store is also on two separate city bus routes so it's easy access!

Thank you for sharing about the bus routes! When we were younger, we found bulk buying so intimidating because we didn’t know how to get it all home (no good public transport). Now we can drive more easily, but it’s so good to be aware of those options if you’re trying to save on gas or don’t have a car!

@@bethkastl8712 the bus is still a little hit or miss here, but it's getting better every year. Most routes are still only 6am-7pm Minday -Friday, but some are also Saturday and four are 7days a week 6am-midnight....

@@cynthiafisher9907 Cool! I love the rumor that it was nicknamed Walmart-killer! 😆 I'm a big fan of shopping at Mom-n-Pops type stores and employee owned stores whenever possible. Two of three are on bus routes and the third is within a mile of a family member's home which is handy for a nondriver!

i buy bulk carrots , celery and onions , i cut them up on my mandolin / chopper , cut everything into small cubes , put them in bags , mixed , for soups and stews . i just finished mine , ten lbs of carrots , 5 lbs celery , 3 lbs onions, and 5 lbs potatoes. i press as much air out of the bag as i can and put them in the deep freezer . i keep it on hand . i also keep the parts i cut off and the leaves in another bag for stock !

We do that too but on a small scale. One pound carrot, one celery bunch and one large onion once a month. We cut it, portion in baggies and freeze for soup and casseroles for the month. It helps our budget and there's no waste.

For people on tight budgets, ask at the bakery counter, or a bakery if they have any empty buckets with lids. They get their icing, pie fillings and other ingredients in large food-grade container. God Bless you all and keep your mood high.

I learn something new everytime I watch your videos. You may be a beginner in your book but you're more than that to most of us watching you. I hope you are able to read my comment so you know that what you doing have purpose and meaning. I'm on my journey to being self sufficient and being a city girl from Chicago and moving to Texas to pursue this dream of living self sufficiently was very hard. But watching you and a few other I'm learning a lot and it's not as hard when you see other make the same mistakes as you. It makes you feel sort of normal..cus what is normal anyway. Well let me cut this book short by just saying you rock girl keep up the good work and videos.

Thank you Becky! Thank you for doing this homework for all your followers! This is the first time in my life where I have felt the need to buy in bulk and to stock up on our essentials! Everyone should feel food safe! I started small, if I needed tuna or soup and it was on sale I would buy what I needed and a couple extra to store. And you are right in saying don’t buy what you don’t like to eat! I have a lot of dried beans but prefer canned beans, can’t wait to buy canned beans again soon! Again, thank you!!!!

You can cook the dried beans, then freeze for up to 6 months.

Thank you so much for sharing this information. My experience back in 2017 gave me the reassurance that I was doing the right thing. I had to have knee surgery and about 4 weeks post op my father in law fell on my mother in law (she was trying to break his fall). She had a fractured pelvis and he really wasn't hurt. She is his primary care taker. To make a long story short, they both went to a nursing facility for him 2 weeks and her 3 weeks. Medicare only allows 2 weeks unless justified. They came to my house to recover an hope to be able to return home. About a week after their accident, my daughter became very sick and was in the hospital and unable to care for her 2 year old daughter who also came to my house. With so many that could not stay home alone I was able to go thru my back up food and we managed just fine. My husband was traveling with his job and he is an only child so this was all on me until he came home but we survived and became stronger. Our faith gave us the strength and the wisdom to have started this practice years earlier was truly a blessing.

I always say I'm prepared not paranoid when people make fun. I've been doing it for 30+yrs (started when I lived in hurricane country). I used to freeze milk when all of my kids were home. We don't drink enough now to do that.

i am SO jealous of people who actually SAVE money at farmers markets! for us, seattle area, its a trendy kind of thing, and its good because you support local farmers but you will spend a LOT more at the farmers market than at a grocery store or imperfect or whatever.

Hey Becky, I noticed yesterday when I went to Walmart, they had marked down their fresh Asparagus bunch from $2.48 to $1.44 a bunch. I grabbed a few and put them up in freezer bags. I checked my surrounding area Walmart Stores and even Redding, California location and they were showing the reduced price. I have family in Redding and wanted to let them know also. Loved this video Becky! I agree wholeheartedly. Its not to be labelled as crazy, being prepared means that emergencies aren't as urgent or impactful to my family. It also means I can be a help to my family and friends, I won't have to make my lack of planning someone else's emergency. I am very lucky also my husband is a hunter so free range, grass fed (and I suppose it is organic) is an option for us that is 'affordable' and keeps our freezer stocked.

Chit Chat. my pantry's stock for groceries is sky-high. yes, on stock your pantry my husband thinks I'm crazy. I learn from my mom and grandparents. about growing a garden, canning, freezing foods, We washed clothes by hand. But God always provided us with what we needed and always be a blessing to others.

your video content IS SO HELPFUL! I appreciate the "from scratch/more natural" approach. not 100% perfect, but trying to be more conscious of ingredients. a lot of bulk/grocery haul/ stock pantry youtubers buy really processed cheap food that i would not eat or feed my children. i prefer higher quality ingredients and home cooked meals. I'm making my first rotisserie chicken (from costco, your video idea) in the instant pot for chicken broth. i froze all my veggie scraps from food prepping and im so excited to make my own. i do not like the bouillon cubes at the store. why does broth have soy by products in it?? yuck. i also made your season salt recipe, with a few changes. :) thanks for all you do.

I am trying my best to get a stocked pantry and freezer, but my parents are hoarders (especially food) so it’s a really hard mental thing for me. I just tried grocery shopping for a month two weeks ago and it’s comforting yet anxiety filled having all that in the house.

Great video. Testing out Bountiful Baskets…first pickup is on Saturday! Local, organic produce. Not available everywhere but definitely worth checking out if you’re interested. Better pricing than Misfit or the other one 🧐 which I’ve currently forgotten the name of, lol. Basic basket is $21 per week. No subscription required, just get when you need it. No choice in what comes, it’s local and in season. They do offer add ones though. This week I’m getting kiwi! Who knew? Bring your own laundry basket for pickup 😂. If there’s something I don’t eat, then I’ll bless our local food pantry. The need is high. Abundant blessings to all.

another reason for builk shopping is if you live a long way away from a store were you can purchase the best quality foods and so you only shop two to four times a year. I know several people who only shop four times a year. You purchase all you want in bulk and it's great if you have a busy life to only shop a few times a years. Especially handy if one has a homestead, small farm or has a small business or lives remotely. This is also handy for people who have disabilities and can't get to the store often. also I know some people who are very low income and they save up for shopping twice a year or once a year for pantry staples. And they save money and do all thier cooking from scratch.

Hey Becky. Food- insurance!-YES. Rhight now I'm glad to have it. In Quarantine since ten days thanks to COVID. First 4days Not able to do anything but warm Up Freezermeals. I've been told Kind of your concept by my Mom...much smaller amounts,but thats why i'm able now, to Care of myself,without asking any Help of someone else. I grew up with my parents always having one or two extra of sugar, paper towels, etc... I carried on with that in my life. I can and my husband has a huge garden so we rarely buy veggies at the store. Great video and lesson the share with others.

We grew up in the city my parents always had a packed freezer, refrigerator, and pantry. And that's Just what my siblings & I do also. When my lifelong friends come over and look in my fridge, they say this is your MOM'S Refrigerator!!!😂🤣😂

I agree that being prepared makes sense. I started stocking up early this year as a way to minimize inflation impact. When meats are on sale, I buy and freeze in portions. I bought a grain mill and bought wheat berries. BTW, you will love milling your own grain.

I love this series! One thing I am interested in knowing is how you actually store your bulk items. Like, I’ve seen people say you need to seal them in Mylar bags with O2 absorbers or vacuum seal this and that. I am interested in starting to buy some bulk items but I don’t want them to go bad or get pests. I would rotate my stock like you do but I don’t want it to go bad in the mean time. It is just my husband and me here.

My grocery bill has been going up for a year! The last 6 months has been crazy! I’m paying almost a dollar more per item now. I’ve been looking up frugal recipes on Pinterest and that has helped a lot!

Becky, I recently found your channel and love your enthusiasm, ideas, recipes and so much more. The challenge I have is that my husband and I live in an over 55 community with very limited space both inside and out. As much as I would love to buy in bulk, can and preserve foods etc. we simply do not have the room. I guess I will just have to live vicariously through you and your family.
