When the iPhone X was released back in 2017, Apple officially dropped the home button in favor of something called gesture-based navigation. Now since then, they’ve still included home buttons on lower-cost iPhones like the 8, 8 Plus, and SE. But it’s clear that the home button’s days are numbered. And this major change has made many people feel confused and even a little uncomfortable. I mean, the home button has been around since the original iPhone over a decade ago, and users have become so familiar with its functionality that interacting with the home button has become second nature for most people. So there must be really good reasons for Apple to remove something that their customers have become so familiar with, and thats exactly what I’m going to explain in this video.
Thanks to Skillshare for sponsoring this video!

In 2019 I was still using my good old iPhone 6s. I didn’t upgrade earlier because I was hesitant towards an iPhone without a home button. It was time for an upgrade for me and although my hesitation I bought the iPhone 11. When it was delivered, I immediately set it up. The gesture based control felt so naturally and I was used to it within a couple of minutes! I never want to go back to a home button. Gesture based control is awesome and Face ID is simply lovely. People who are still holding back, make the step up to an iPhone without a home button. You will love it definitely.

This doesn’t have much to do with the topic of the video, but I really like the focus on the face shots. The background is blurred to the point where you can still tell what things are, like the couch and television, but it makes him “pop” out at the camera more. It’s a very small detail that makes a big difference.

6:10 I kind of disagree with this part. Developers still have to support Touch ID and Face ID now even more because phones either have one or the other. I think that it would be easier for developers if the iPhone had both, because then they could pick which they want to support, given that Apple doesn’t make a stupid rule requiring both. Most apps don’t require Face ID or Touch ID, supporting it as an optional feature instead, and if they do require it, the same thing would happen that happens now, you just can’t use that app.

It sounds crazy now I think back, but I did think before I got my iPhone XR, I hope I can get used to the new way of operating it, now there is no home button, but after having it only a few hours it all seemed better! Great video, as usual, support from the UK!

From my experience the one thing that’s a pain with Apple gesture controls is how needlessly tedious it is to get to multitasking. Having to hold and wait feels very unnatural and clunky. It’s why I still use the Home Button on my iPad despite it also allowing for touch controls. To combat that, I propose that you tap the bar to home, and swipe to get to multitasking. Alternately, the could have you use Haptic Touch to get to multitasking and a regular swipe to go home, though that would not be as convenient.

One other way to get to multitasking is swiping up and to the right I always did that instead of swipe and hold

thats horrible for multi tasking. swiping up to go home is the smoothest and fastest way to go home so far. tapping to go home would feel very clunky.

swiping 45 degrees to the right or left avoids the holding time. you should try it out. Additionally, from the Home Screen, swiping to the right on the bar takes you to your last used app.

You’re gonna have to acknowledge the fact that both a) the most popular budget iPhone SE still utilizes Touch ID, which still means fragmentation, and b) the skeumorphic design is going back to 3D with the next iOS...

The objections at 6:30 don't hold water. App developers still had to support both systems if their apps were to run on the iPhone SE. Except that they didn't! Because all you do is call the biometrics routine, and Apple does the rest.

I'll never forget buying an iPhone X and feeling like it was so simple to use compared with an older iPhone. I don't miss the home button and of course prefer the gestures and swipes of a modern iPhone over the older button use for navigating the device. (: Great episode Greg and excited for your next episode.

I got my s9+ 1 year ago coming from s7edge. This was my first phone without home button and I had a big problem with taking screenshots. I could swipe my hand to but it was hard. But then my parents who have a phone without home button teached me how to take screenshots. Now I forgot how to take screenshots with phones with home button 😂

I miss the home button, going from iPhone 7 to iPhone 13. 1: While driving, the home button took a little less concentration and focus. Like when getting an email or text message, I didn’t even have to look at the phone; just physically feel the home button to open it… 2: The swiping requires more dexterity. When I’m cooking in the kitchen, for example, I like the clunkiness of the home button to look at a recipe, versus having to swipe. Or when I’m running around at work, and I get a text or email… 3: Without the physicality of the home button, I often pick up my phone upside down off my bed and dresser, or out of my pocket!!

I had an Android phone when they introduced swipe gestures, so, when I switched back to an iPhone 11 there was hardly a learning curve. One thing that I have appreciated is that swiping up quickly from the bottom brings back to the home screen like the home button used. That's something I had to use a 3rd party launcher when I was on the Android. I can say from having used both platforms that iOS is a little bit more intuitive.

Honestly I like the new design. The two weeks of getting used to is totally worth it. I no longer make accidental in-app purchases I don't intend to buy, and my screen protector is stronger without the arch shape to expose the fingerprint sensor which makes the screen protectors much weaker than the rectangular shape ones

When I got the XR I thought I’d miss the home button but I don’t. Now I’ve got the 12 Pro and I’m definitely used to it by now. One thing I do wish is they would put the power button back on the top instead of on the side. That I do miss because for me it’s easier to reach up to the top and press a button then it is the side and on the side when I put something in my pocket sometimes I hit it. At least it isn’t like my parents S21 Ultras that have the volume and power buttons on the same side that drives them crazy and it would me too.
