Some other points not mentioned: - They don’t have to wait for Intel to develop new chips - They have complete control over both hardware and software (better integration) - Bigger profit margins This is honestly the biggest evolution of tech in years and nobody apart from tech geeks seems to be recognising it.

I just upgraded my computer, from a LapTop I'd been rocking for nearly 5 years to a new (& my 1st ever) Mac Computer. I ended up choosing the M1 Mac Mini, to be as different from my last computer as possible & also because my ol'Laptop served me so well I didn't just want to change it with a similar device, I wanted it to be a whole new learning experience. I am absolutely blown away by the M1 Mac Minis performance & I am hoping to be making a Tech&Science initial review video for it this coming weekend 😃

This is the crown jewel piece apple needed and have now finally conquered. The next 2 years will be transition phase but after that Apple will have power in laptops that no one can compete on because of optimisation, fanless powerful laptops with extreme battery life and super lightweight as the motherboard is smaller and will be cheaper helping Apple to price its future laptops at a lower point. This holds well for the future of Apple.

2:00 you missed on the memory speed previously memory was slow; CISC made sense and won in practice over an equivalent RISC chip. Apple made M1 as a fast (and simpler) RISC chip paired with fast memory on a single die (and, moreover, there's a big.little architecture)

Modern CISC designs are only CISC to the user, they're all pretty much RISC internally. The instruction decoder breaks the "complex" instructions into smaller RISC-like uops and those are then executed through the pipelines. ARM designs can be faster because they're simpler and have fewer abstractions layers, fixed length instructions are, for example, much easier to decode when you need to decode hundreds of them while predicting branches.

It's nice to have different competition in our lives, also it's great to acknowledge brands such as Apple creating their own technologies/CPUs/chips, I support such intention's. By creating their own unique chips/CPUs/products they're good example others & other companies or institutions and may exceed other firm's products/service's standard's cohesively. Just to be clear, RISC doesn't mean a smaller instruction set than CISC! For example, the current ARM ISA has over 200 instructions in it, far more than the original 8086! What's been reduced is the complexity of each individual instruction. The most notable simplification is that with the exception of instructions that explicitly load and store data to/from memory, RISC instructions can only operate on registers. For example, a CISC ISA might have an ADD instruction that can add values in registers, in memory, through a pointer, etc, depending on the addressing mode, whereas the equivalent ADD instruction in a RISC ISA doesn't have any addressing modes, and will only allow you to add the contents of one register to another. The data has to be loaded into the registers from wherever they are in memory with LOAD instructions. The CISC version also has to do this, but the LOAD is implicit rather than explicit in the RISC case. This, along with other features such as a fixed-length instruction word vastly simplify instruction decode, meaning instruction decoding can be faster. It also means that instructions that don't manipulate memory can (usually) execute in a single clock cycle on RISC architectures, whereas the execution time of a given instruction in a CISC architecture can vary depending on where the data being processed is coming from.

We bought a Mac mini to try out ahead of a refresh or start computers. It works pretty well even with the Rosetta emulator for most apps. The biggest issue is that any Java based IDE app we use runs like a dog or falls over. I am assuming the two emulators don’t play nice. Overall it’s a good computer for the money for our non-developer staff members.

All CPU’s today are RISC at the core level including Intel and AMD. The x64 and x86 instructions are automatically translated to micro code (which is of RISC type) which is then run in both Intel and AMD CPUs. This has been the case for at least the last decade. IBM mainframe instructions are likewise converted to RISC micro code before execution. I have a quad core Intel CPU that takes a maximum of 15 watts where a “normal” desktop CPU would be 100 watts. Intel chips have and still power many portable and battery powered devices. ARM CPU’s do use less power on average than most Intel CPU’s but ARM chips have also been much less powerful until just recently. Intel chips didn’t need to be less power hungry until relatively recently as performance was stressed by Intel customers much more. The biggest problem with the M1 is that it is proprietary to Apple in it’s entirety (ARM isn’t proprietary but the custom group of hardware in the M1 definitely is). Apple has shown since the 1970’s that they can’t be trusted to not gouge customers whenever they have a perceived monopoly. You historically paid a premium price for any Apple hardware, for relatively slow or inferior product. (I only say this based on my personal experience spanning over 40 years as a professional software micro computer specialist.) The operating system in the Mac computers wasn’t created by Apple (it is an adaptation of a version of Unix. That might be good or bad depending on your needs). The M1 is a spectacular achievement but the jury is out on what that means to computer sales now and in the near future.

M1 chip in MacBook Air, Pro, and mini. Next year M1 in imac. I just bought a M1 Mac mini. It is as fast as my phone. No waiting to boot up, searching is instant, no waiting. I hated using my computer as it was so slow vs iPad and phone. That new chip is a game changer.

The old Apple Power PC chips were RISC. When they moved to Intel which were CISC, we had to go through the software transition and use Rosetta for apps that were not ready. This time, there have already been speed tests (shown here on KZfaq) that demonstrate video rendering being faster even with Rosetta on M1 chips. RISC is what made iPhones possible and now such amazing devices.

put simply, Intel went on lock-down and Apple's contract with them prevents them from dancing publicly with AMD.

To me, the big part of this move, on top of the cost, control and performance gains that Apple has produced their own chips, is that Developers can write code that with minor tweaks to account for display size and input formats will work on both Mac and IOS devices. That places a HUGE established market to be exploited without having to write code totally differently for Mac and IOS. And the number of IOS devices is HUGE.

The thought "How hard can it possibly be to do this myself?" has led to many mistakes. My do-it-yourself projects taught me this.

I remember reading plenty of articles about AMD and Intel racing for the 7nm. When after AMD got there first, all of a sudden Apple came out with a 5nm. I guess Apple is working in silent as usual.

Good overall but intels 10nm chips etc is more dense then other manufacturers 7nm.

The success of ARM architecture on the phone world, makes Apple thinking seriousely to integer that on computers, maybe the mastery control for the full nano integration process "all in one chip" is the first factor to make this posssible now at our present days, and re-make a perfect adaptable Operating System software as additional key by Apple.

You forget to mention the cost savings. By using its own chips, Apple will increase its margins or lower the prices of macs.

As much as I despise the Apple policy to lock in their users into their universe the much I respect their hardware. About a year ago I got my first router capable of 5 GHz WLAN. My stone age iPad2 (which I got (used) as a gift) connected using 5 GHz - Damn! This is how a top notch company should be run!

I am a professional software developer and I just got the new M1 Mac book Pro. It's the best laptop I've ever laid my eyes on. It's so light yet powerful. It has not overheated since I started using. No fan noise.

I looked for Apple processor option for iMac but could not find any. All options are with Intel processors.

Later, when Acorn was destroyed by asset-strippers, the ARM division was set up separately, so ARM now stands for Advanced RISC Machine. But before the destruction, Acorn had built a PC on the ARM, which became the Acorn Risc PC, and ran nine times as quick as a 386 machine. Even today a 233MHz Risc PC can outrun a 3GHz Intel/Windows PC. Such as a 7-second boot. It is rather ironic that an American company, Apple, will now be wrapping itself round a British chip, invented by company whose demise was in part due to Apple's success. (There are still original Risc PC's for sale from time to time on eBay and other sites). The ARM chip has become the most successful chip ever. It powers most smartphones, for example. ARM licenses its chips to other companies--such as, in this case, Apple.
