3:06 yes. cause there is 1 example worth mentioning. Nigel Mansell was disqualified from the 1989 Portugese grand prix for reversing in the pitlane when he overshoot his pitbox, and reversed back. Reversing in pitlane is still prohibited and leads to DSQ,. But that doesn't hold for reversing onto the racetrack. (Which of course still requires to be done in a safe way, which Hamilton did together with his race engineer. If not done safe, it's still a penalty for rejoining the track in an unsafe way like Vettel did in Canada 2019)

One more reason Matty: a safety car (or red flag) is a MASSIVE disadvantage to the lapped cars. On-track a lapped car may only be 3s behind his unlapped rival. But a safety car (or red flag) artificially puts a WHOLE LAP between them where it should be only 3s. Therefore letting them catch up is the most sensible thing to do. It evens out the field after the already unfair effect of the safety car (red flag) bunching everyone up.

I think with the reversing bit people confuse the rules with the pit lane, where reversing is (as far as I know) absolutely forbidden. As for the unlapping, an extra reason I think would be that it could disadvantage lapped cars even more. Imagine a race where cars in P12 and P13 are only 5 seconds apart, but the leader is between them, having lapped P13 when the Safety Car or Red Flag is called. That 5 second gap will be turned into a whole lap on the restart. And while I know my example is pretty extreme (although even with a gap of 20 or 30 seconds the difference is huge), my gut feeling is that lapped cars would lose much more ground overall than the leaders who built up sizeable leads. They might be backmarkers, but they're still fighting for positions, even if it's not for points.

Another point in favor of this rule is the potential unfairness of not giving a lap back to lapped cars and putting them back in order of position for the restart. For example @ Imola Stroll was the first lapped car and Ricciardo was next to be lapped. If the race had continued w/o the red flag Danny ric would have also been lapped and he was about 10 secs or so ahead of stroll on track so potentially stroll could’ve caught and passed him for 6th (he almost did in the actual race after getting his lap back 5 second penalty notwithstanding ). If the backmarkers didn’t get a lap back after the red and were put back in order behind the leaders (which they obviously would have to be for safety as this video points out) then stroll and the others would need to pass cars in front of them on the restart, catch the leaders and un-lap themselves, and somehow gain a entire extra lap worth of time to be in the same position they were to potentially gain 6th place before the red flag

What people don't understand is that people hate that Hamilton is so lucky. Even when he has a huge mistake, the entire race seems to change to wipe that mistake from existence. It happens constantly. His luck is unbelievable. Leclerc's engine fails in Bahrain, and Hamilton inherits the win. Bottas gets a ferrari piece stuck in his car in Imola and a VSC comes out and goes away exactly as Hamilton enters and exits the pits so he inherits the win. Rosberg's pedals break and he has to retire from the lead in Russia, Hamilton inherits the win. Rosberg's gearbox fails in Britain and Hamilton inherits the win. Glock mysteriously goes slow and Hamilton inherits the world title. Vettel crashes in the lead in Germany, Kimi pits out of Hamiltons way and he inherits the win Etc etc. It's endless. Even when he hit the barrier in Germany and Merc had a 60 second pitstop that put him out of the points. Both Williams had a penalty that moved Hamilton into the points.

If it’s really all about safety, then simply use the rule nascar does, once your lapped and yellow comes out, or red flag, before the race restart the lapped cars move back behind rest of the cars that are on the lead lap. That keeps from having lapped card mixed in with lead lap cars for a restart.

Normally during a safety car, cars which are lapped down, are told to go around the track and regain their normal position. But what about in a red flag situation, are those cars driving extra laps before returning to the pit for the restart? If not, that would mean that those cars would have extra fuel to spend driving more aggressively until the end of the race. I haven't noticed so far and if would be good to know.

Under such extreme pressure and battling for the win, it was genius of Hamilton to reverse through the entire gravel trap because of course, any BMW owner will tell you front-wheel drive allows you to pull yourself out of such tricky situations (rather than having your rear wheels push you out). So he didn't bury his tyres into the gravel and managed to rejoin the race. If he would've reversed slightly and tried to exit the gravel trap by driving forwards, he probably would've buried his rears into the gravel.

For example: Mercedes miscalculates the fuel needed for the race, so they get Hamilton in to quickly refuel. I remember Stroll benefitting from this at Monza last year where he hadn't pitted and basically got a free stop when the red flag came out which annoyed Norris because he was behind Stroll at the restart. This is something that should be changed as you're making an unfair gain in time. The only exception to changing tires under a red flag should be changing weather conditions.

The unlapping is unnecessary. You can reorganize the driving order but let the full lapping stand and use the argument that drivers who are on the verge of getting lapped would get a blue flag anyway (so if a P1 and P2 have some other cars between them for example) . The rules must be made so that the championship race is as fair as possible. The strain in the tires for lapping people give the lapped racer an advantage in this situation. The max verstappen/ Hamilton situation could decide the championship and shouldn't be the case. Hamilton should have been rewarded for his teammates crash.
