Furious farmers drive their protests home to European Union leaders.
And more demonstrations are planned in their revolt against high costs, EU climate change policies, food imports and support for Ukraine.
So what political impact could their action have?
Presenter: Adrian Finighan
Guests:
Michael Fitzmaurice - independent member of the Irish Parliament (Dáil Éireann), farmer and advocate for farmers and rural communities.
Francisco Guerreiro - Independent Member of the European Parliament from Portugal with the Group of Greens and European Free Alliance.

cheap import from Ukraine gives EU customers much lower prices for food in supermarket than current. it helps stopping inflation in the coutry. In another hand, why tax payers of EU must pay for no profitable business of small farmers? why do some EU farmers do not want to change their business model to getting profit without subsidies? So, it`s high time to change business and production models of some farmers to getting more profit with processing of raw materials form Ukraine or America.

The funniest part was that the green guy from Strasbourg with a ring in one ear truly believes that his powers are justified by some natural laws that supersede most of the direct experience the farmers have in dealing with nature. That guy spends way too much time on his desk and in conference rooms. It should be required for the EU bureaucrats to work every year for a 1-2 months as farm hands, or as harvest helpers, for example, drive a harvester during the end of summer.

It is very telling that the European policy analyst admits that competition from growers in Latin America are not held to the same standards as European growers but this is okay because it is "good" for the economy. If the goal is to stop climate change these imports should be banned. Taxes should be imposed based on the distance from producer to consumer to account for the environmental cost of transport. And VAT should be greatly reduced or emiminated on locally proced food. Helping local farmers to produce food sustainably is what is best for the local population. Perhaps the EU policy analysts should start looking at the environmental cost of the perptual war machine and focus efforts on diplomacy.

I agree with Mr. Fitzmaurice about meat imports. Here in the US, the meat industry is competing against Brazilian meat imports which are cheaper because of a weaker Brazilian currency while reports of BSE (mad cow disease) are not coming through fast enough sometimes (China temporarily embargoed their meat for a little while). We already import a lot of meat from Canada. I get tariffs are low or non-existent because there's high demand for low cost meat but shouldn't countries be protecting their own farmers first? We also have subsidies on most vegetables meant to keep them affordable for low-income families but if governments aren't going to adjust those subsidies while not addressing the higher energy costs, what do they expect farmers to do?

It is important to note that the powers-that-be built a system and infrastructure that demands petroleum and petrochemical products. Capitalist markets push farmers to grow in size or get out -- more machinery, more land. This, when it has been shown that small family farms are the most productive. Regenerative farming increases productivity even more -- when nutrition and the long term wellbeing of the inhabitants, the land, and the planet are taken into account. Earth is largely a closed system, what you put out there gets everywhere. Producing food should, IMHO, be uncoupled from profit; it creates perverse incentives.Cheaper is not better

There was a farmer that won the lottery, asked what he would do with the money he said "Guess I will keep farming until the money's all gone". Small Farmers do need to adapt and diversify their income streams, farming alone isn't enough. Add solar energy production to crop fields, some plants like strawberries produce higher yields with partial shade. Farmers in west Texas have added Shrimp & Fish farms, seafood can be grown in large tanks almost anyplace. Bioreactors are easy to build to grow algae as protein source for human & livestock consumption, algae uses photosynthesis to convert CO2 & water into oxygen and carbohydrates (which algae uses as food), some algae types produce fuel oil. If anything, politicians might just create the incentive for farmers to ADAPT, those that can't adapt will die off.

Farmers are allowed to protest in every way they can think of and they're never considered radical or violent. But, people who stand up for human rights or the environment are silenced and heavily critized. The commission could've given funds for the farmers to be more sustainable instead of simply scrapping the plan for a better future, but of course, Ursula von der Leyen couldn't care less about us, our environment and our health. All she cares about is the June election so she can stay in power.

You know why "sustainability" fails? Because as a concept, it is faulty. Think about it: do you want to sustain a broken leg or do you want to heal and improve your mobility? Same with the whole supply chain, from production to consumption. You can't expect to sustain degraded resources and an extractive mindset and not have it collapse. Governments set this up. They could be part of the solution but choose to continue this extractive mindset and place the burden on the farmers alone.

EU is doing a spread: on the one hand trying to implement environment legislation and on the other hand supporting agriculture (agrindustry) that is the most productive, as the market is becoming dominated by US and BRICS. Selfsufficiency of Europe is asking too much, but yes, we need future access to staple food and energy. So we need at least enough own production to be able to barter with our core business - industry. This can be done IF farmers are getting paid for what they produce: much when grown sustainable and less when grown industrially. EU should be Adam Smith's 'market master' and dress up a price system. They don't now because of agribusiness lobby and confusion/dividedness.

I cannot believe the woman at the beginning claiming that as farmers they take care of the soil and animals, provide food, and take care of our health while objecting to environmental safeguards. I do not see that it is beneficial for my health for more pesticides to be used or continued reliance on methods that harm the soil, air, water, and animals - including us. I realize this is not the only concern of the farmers, and I think farmers should be supported by the governments to deal with all of these issues: and neither the farmers nor the people should bear the brunt of EU - and US - support for the stupid war in Ukraine. What will be the consequences to all of us of denying reality and refusing to change? BTW: a) there is no such thing as free trade; and, b) I do not always support the Greens. Get over it.

The industry kill the farmers, because they want to export their goods for more money. Most of the farmers only solution is to support protectionism, and more money to change their agriculture methods.

until you see the prices the farmers sell for and what you pay at the market. Then you realise there are plenty of thieves and how greedy they are. You could also use the same argument re regulations. Ultimately, the common folk pays the cost. Not the soulless lot in Brussels and big corporations with Panamanian bank accounts. There is a limit to everything, however, and levee is about to break.

Food prices are high enough in Europe, esp. when wages, esp. in Southern Europe, are low. If they give into their demands on trade they sould end the subsidies and also require all farms to pay the national minimum wages! Moreover, subsidies should only be used for transitions, expansions, repairs, & only for small farmers, not agribusinesses.

Id recommend for all of you concerned about nature preservation, climate change and food security to try farming. Just for your own needs. It will teach you a whole lot and give you a understanding of life. Take wolfs for example. If id live in a city, sure wolfs are cool, why would you want to limit where they roam? Live in the country side and raise sheep and you will see it quite a bit different. The thing is its not a one or the other. The thing is you get a perspective when farming that its a matter of balance. I grow sheep, does it create greenhouse gases, apparently but it also conserves and maintaines local ecosystems that have developed for thousands of years in tandem with animal husbandry. Do i kill and cause suffering to animals. Yes but, i also allow them to live a fulfilling sheeps life where they get to express their sheepness to the full. And safety, you dont want to come to the barn or meadow to find 10 savaged and badly injured sheep and having to put the down. But thats what wolfs do. I have nothing against wolfs. But common sense states that you have to limit where they roam. Just like Ursula wonderlion had to experience first hand, sadly. All im saying is get perspective.

I'm down with protecting farmers, but I'm more down with sustainable agriculture because with climate change we need regenerative practices. I don't understand why they are complaining about climate issues but also complaining about not wanting to do the things that will help. It's the whole capitalist system not green policies. No one should be protesting over not being able to use pesticides they are toxic. Can't complain about climate change and show up with tons of tractors..sounds like right wing stuff. Even pope is against populism

Exactly. Especially supporting the use of pesticides is beyond me as it's not only bad for the environment but they're literally putting harmful chemicals into our food.

@@MarginalFarming WHAT IS REGEN FARMING ??? NEVER HEARD OF IT !
@MarginalFarming
@MarginalFarming 3 ай бұрын
@@edwardcarberry1095 Regenerative farming is a practice one step above sustainable. Sustainable is giving the soil back what nutrients you removed when you grew a crop. Regenerative you give back and then add some extra for the next time. So you are continuously improving the condition of the soil. The objective is to reduce costly inputs and labor over time while improving the soil to retain nutrients longer and create better water holding capacities and infiltration for gas exchange and respiration. Most operators are utilizing biology and animals for fertilizing and protecting the soils with cover crops between cash crops to keep the soil alive and protected from erosion. It's is what nature used to do before machinery was invented.

What happens when there is less farmers who supply food and more mouths needing to be fed? Not only will cost rise to meet demand, instead of having ma and pa corner stores (smaller scales farmers) that compete for business, you will have a few centralized supermarket chains(large scale industrialized farms that destroy and deplete land) that will make people dependent on them. If supermarkets refused service today, have you thought about how you and yours might survive?
