It’s a rarity now visit your local grocery, open up your Netflix account, or even browse through Lazada and Shopee without coming across something “Korean.” Whether that’s a K-drama, a K-beauty product, or trending Korean food item, our daily lives have been peppered with a touch of Seoul. Not that we’re complaining, but haven’t you ever wondered how we got here? How we collectively just fell into the rabbit hole of K-content and its trappings?
If you’re too lazy to Google the facts or find a reliable Reddit thread to binge-read, we’re here to answer your curiosity in The TLDR (short for Too Long Didn’t Read.) With Kumu host Jessica Ragasa, we dissect our obsession with everything Korean and how K-culture has taken over our day-to-day life.

Was thinking about this recently, I feel like Filipinos tend to praise and fantasize the culture of others more than our own. This often results to mass produced duplicates of products from other countries. It’s kind of sad for me, because although it educates filipinos on the many cultures around the world, we also forget to create things rooted in our own culture. Could it be that years of being colonized by different countries, and our culture being seen as “less” shaped how we blindly praise and lust after the cultures of other countries more than our own? These are just thoughts, they’re probably not even true, but as we should all know by know, truth is a social construct and very subjective.

@@johnnybaum7957 that’s a big conclusion to jump to, when it definitely wasn’t our country’s choice to be colonized by spaniards and white people. But not everyone knows that. Why? That part of history was erased from the history books of the colonizers who until now see us as less, or can’t swallow the disgusting acts made during those times.

@@keishapulido5999 Stop blaming your history for what you guys lack now. Korea also have a long history of colonization and China and Japan tries to fabricate history all the time. That didn't stop the Koreans from achieving what they did. Korea was the poorest country in the world after the Korean war. Here you are blaming history for this and that but its your politicians and lawmakers you failed your country.

its absolutely disgusting how many of my fellow countrymen fall so hard to this. There is nothing bad at appreciating other cultures, but when they decide to reject their own, that's where the problem starts.

Colonialism has given many Fillipinos & SEAsians a self-loathing attitude so they have to look to Korean & Japanese culture to relate. I’m a massive fan of Southern Chinese & HK culture so I have a big appreciation of the Fillipino-Chinese cultural parallels(especially from my dad’s Chinoy roots) but I’m also very vocal of my Ilocano side and my experience growing up in Bulacan. East Asians will never take us seriously if we continue loathe ourselves

I guess not all but it is prevalent on which era. The gen z's are more k pop oriented. But filipinos have appreciation on certain cultures but sadly fails to embrace their own. There was a time though that OPM is so huge and not even foreign artist can compete against them, esp in the era of pinoy rock, the acoustic era of mid 2000's

Colonialism has made Fillipinos loathe their own culture and turn to Korean, Japanese, or American culture to relate. There are probably more under 25 Fillipinos today studying Korean or Japanese than Fillipinos studying Ilocano, Cuyunon, or Fookien. Korean & Japanese influence in our culture isn’t a bad thing, but valuing their influence over our own internal influence is a bad thing

@@keishapulido5999 no they are not. They are under a Korean ent. It was an idea frm the company and not bec of the korean craze. The company decided to invest here bec there are already a lot of kpop groups. Plus filipinos are more adept to english which accrdg to the ceo is the weakness of koreans. They are a Ppop group not a kpop group. Their albums are all in filipino or english not korean

@@crazy_keightie well aware they’re a ppop group with pure filipinos and filipino songs, but what I meant was that they’re still modelled after kpop groups. Their sound, style, and everything else is similar to kpop. This time they just changed the language. Since the video is about filipinos being obsessed with everything korean, they must’ve included sb19 to show as an example of how the korean craze has affected Philippine media and entertainment. There are even remakes of kdramas to suit the filipino audience. So I think that’s what sb19 kinda is. Even the ceo of sb19 is korean.. not filipino. I think that just it. Not bashing sb19 or anything. I think they’re very talented. 😅

@@crazy_keightie I mean, if kpop wasn’t so popular here, the company wouldn’t have even thought to invest in filipinos.

Northern east asia influence is the reason why Philippines lose their own culture. 1930's Philippines was far way more better. Filipinos before was well-mannered and disciplined

Also, We Have K-Language, I've began Learning Korean Language since June, due to K-Culture, and K-Pop, and I'm Liking Korean Culture, that's why I have a Korean Name for my Channel, also, I've Invented a New Word: Filingul, which means Tagalog Language written in Hangul, and I've been Transliterating it now, to show that we need another writing system for tagalog.
