3 lovely Dartmoor locations, a FEW BANGER shots and one day of abject failure... but this time it wasn't down to me!
Greens are notoriously difficult to shoot and in this video I find out why, while testing my creativity and ability to discern when to keep the camera in the bag and just enjoy the moment (something I'm not very good at doing!)
Follow my journey from 'a bit iffy' through to 'ohhhh helllloooo' as I finally get a couple of shots I may consider for my portfolio when I review it.
00:00 Welcome to Dartmoor
00:37 Location 1 - not bad overall
04:33 Location 2 - total failure
08:01 Location 3 - ohhhh helllloooo
All photos captured on my Canon EOSR using a Nisi Polariser and, sometimes, my Lee Little Stopper.

The day before you made your first photograph, you had precisely no experience of photography. You took a camera into your hands, and over time, learned to make lots of photographs of pretty scenes. Until you take your camera out of your bag, point it at something and , you will never learn how to make good photographs in those conditions. I like blue sky days. I don't like blue sky days with the temperature around 45. I melt.

Shots 1 and 2 were the best. My tuppenceworth: greens are fine as long as they aren't the primary focus of the shot or otherwise dominate. Small leaves tend to make shots look messy, so a large aperture helps to make subjects stand out more. And the sidelight of early morning or late evening gives more variation to the greens and stops them from being so uniform.

Thanks Dougie. I think the inclusion of another factor was really important… I agree and this was something I really discovered that weekend. I like side lighting hugely especially here on the South Downs. It just gets harsh so quickly at this time of year! I had to rely on heavier than I normally use dodging and burning to add depth. 😊

Hello Louise , I think due to the water looking still in the middle of picture 1 , it makes it take. the eye off the rocks and waterfall. 2 is our favourite as it has everything you were asking for . Louise, I love your photography and I appreciate the honesty and forthrightness of your videos. However, today you surprised me a little. In Australia, there is an old fashioned saying that a "Pom would complain about a sunny day." As a kid, I never really believed it and never experienced it... until this video. I am 62 and I never expected to actually hear a Pom complain, at length, about a sunny day! Louise, when the sun shines, it is God smiling at you... pick up on that vibe and get happy. If you feel like you have been handed a lemon, then make some bloody lemonade, mate! Grab that camera and start clicking something like it is the last time that you get to hold a camera. Enjoy the bloody sunshine, mate. 😊😊😊😊

Hi Peter, I love your comment and I shared it with 2 chaps I was capturing the Milky Way with on a hill at 1.30 am. They commented that the old fashioned saying is actually fairly accurate. It is a national pastime with the weather sparking up conversations at bus stops across England. Invariably it’s too hot, too cold, too wet or too dry. I was also being a bit tongue in cheek and talking the mickey out of myself. I love the sun, I love lemonade… I partake in both merrily. I was just there to do something and was being a bit Pom about it 😉. Thank you for making me smile 😁.

@@louisewelcomephotography Hi Louise, thank you for receiving my comments in the manner which they were written; just some fun banter. I am really happy that you enjoyed my comment. The funny thing was I was watching another YT video about a photographer living in Spain; Ralph Goldsmith. I really like this channel because he takes a lot of time to explain his thought processes behind a photo. Anyway, it was a beautiful, sunny and cloudless day and this gentleman is taking a photo of a road leading to a distant farm. Straight of the bat, he says, "Oh, this one is going to be B&W - too much blue sky.". But you chose to live in Spain, mate - this is what you signed up for! Then, I rolled straight into your video! Seriously, I do love your photos. Your videos are also more realistic than many others because you share the images that don't match your expectations. There are not many other photography YT channels that do this. Many thanks, Peter.

Okay okay okay young lady You need to get your butt back to that place at time index 6:37 in this video where you are in front of that very gorgeous gnarly tree with all that moss Why do I say you need to get back there with blue skies like you had You were looking at things in monochrome and you had such an opportunity that you missed all together If you wanted to do monochrome in that area with all of those trees all of that moss including the boulders with a moss You should have used an IR720 or an 850 with a CPL so you have a much more darker black foreboding skies and all of that foliage would have been so gorgeously white even though and there was no foliage on the trees I'm talking about the moss
