_Dangerous_ _Liaisons_ and _Valmont_ both based on the same 18th century novel. The former was released first in 1989 and was a big success. The second came months later and flopped big in the box office but was the better movie IMHO.

It's also a market fixation - if two movies are similar, then they naturally compete each other with sinergetic marketing being created. If two are completely different, whoever chose a bad theme for the season loses completely. When hundreds of millions of dollars are at the stake, the investors can't gamble so they choose a safer bet.

It's funny because my spouse keeps thinking plot points of The Prestige are actually from The Illusionist and I keep telling him that no everything you remember is from The Prestige. Although they were likely conceived as being complementary, they are both Disney. I'm late to this party, but for consideration: The Road to El Dorado (released March 2000) and The Emperor's New Groove (released Dec 2000). Both are Mesoamerican buddy-comedies! Fun facts: T.Emperor's.N.G originally had Roger Allers directing (from The Lion King!) and he wanted Sting to provide the music.Hercules and Pocahontas not having been smash hits put pressure on this film and Allers left the project (the end product did make $). Road to El Dorado followed DreamWorks early (successful) biblical films. The film even 'stole' Hans Zimmer and Elton John (who collabed on Allers' The Lion King) to do the score. This movie bombed.

Rhapsody Rabbit and Cat Concerto. These two shorts are so similiar that they can't possibly be a coincidence. There's a theory that the pianist who did the Tom & Jerry short was originally meant to play the piano for the Bugs Bunny short before being replaced. He would likely have been the one who took the idea with him to MGM.

Yes. In the current day and age its just stealing ideas. There is no "twin films" in the current day. Its a phenomena that it happened during the 1940s and stuff. Yet today it does not make as much sense. Hence I don't like the idea of twin films being talked about too much. Since there was a time where an Ex-Disney employee told the plot of their new film "Newt" to someone at Blue Sky Studios and made the film "RIO" the two films had very similar plots. Newt was supposed to be about 2 blue footed newts who are the last in existence. You can guess why it Newt was cancelled. So is it a "phenomena" in the current age? It just seems like either piggy backing, stealing, or on the very VERY rare occurrence a coincidence.

It’s sad because a lot of up and coming writers might skip around studios pitching their original script, and when one studio turns them down, they’ll pitch it to one who agrees. The studio that turned them down might hear about the project and they’ve practically heard the whole story already, so they could just change it a bit and totally shut down the competition. It’s all for money and promotions out in Hollywood.

Never have I ever found any wisdom in making serious "real-life" (non-sci-fi) action movies where a modern U.S. head of state would be in danger for being President. In part, because they run the risk of being seen as campaign material for a future election. Except perhaps "Independence Day" (1996), "Deep Impact", and "Armageddon" (1998), but these are all catastrophe films. Oddly enough, ID4 and "Deep Impact" depict fictional presidents in a very meaningful way. Ironically to all the ne'er-do-gooders, 1/6 (January 6, 2021), when the safety of the Vice President and the U.S. Congress was compromised, came and went, and democracy was saved. "The Day of the Jackal" (1973), set in France, is awesome, though.

Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove v.s. Lumet's Fail-Safe, both 1964
@JoseMorales-lw5nt
@JoseMorales-lw5nt 3 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: Kubrick was told to push back the release date for DR. STRANGELOVE so audiences could take in FAIL-SAFE first. Knowing 2 films were using the same source material, studio heads compromised. Reasoning that audiences would be better off seeing the dramatic version first, FAIL-SAFE got the 1963 release they hoped for. While STRANGELOVE was pushed back to a 1964 release, there was an unintended impact to Kubrick's masterpiece. As the agreement was set for the 2 films, John F. Kennedy was senselessly killed in late November, 1963. Consequently, one scene mentioning the city of Dallas was redubbed to sound like LAS VEGAS. While the original pie fight finale was cut out for the now infamous bombing finale. In case your wondering, Kubrick's original ending saw the President being taken out by massive pie hits. Eerily, one of the actors utters this line: OUR ILLUSTRIOUS PRESIDENT HAS BEEN CUT DOWN IN HIS PRIME. 🇵🇷🇺🇸😎🦂

Disney is infamous for doing that. _The_ _Lion_ _King_ is so much a rip-off of _Kimba_ _The_ _White_ _Lion_ that Matthew Broderick first thought that he was voicing in an American adaptation. Disney sued the company behind Kimba when they later released a Kimba movie with a story close to The Lion King, but lost when presented with the original manga of that story with a publication date that preceded Disney's movie. Look also up the stories around Pirates of the Caribbean (the first movie) - supposedly based on a pitch that Disney didn't take, but stole afterwards, and Zootopia - also supposedly based on a pitch that Disney declined, where the accuser has some concept art eerily similar Disney's characters to back up his claim.

Very insightful. There is another very famous example. In 1983, two James Bond films were released: Octopussy (Roger Moore) and Never Say Never Again (Sean Connery, brief reprise of the role). There was a dispute and rivalry between the two films' teams that resulted in both being released at around the same time. Octopussy did better at the box office. The diispute is explained in detail in the illuminating 007 documentary 'Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007'.
