I wonder if people with more money than sense just see all those 9's in the model name, and see the high price, and assume it's the best.
@SIPEROTH
@SIPEROTH 7 ай бұрын
Something like that. They learned the 9's are the top of the line and they don't get that those are older products that aren't as good compared to newer. Also is the sellers being stubborn. They got those products as top line expensive and they haven't managed to sell them all when it was time and now they refuse to accept reality and just keep the price high like that hoping some f00l like the above will buy.

IMO, there is nothing wrong buying a 9900K today, to give 2-3 more years to your platform, but not at 500. CPUs don't really "age". They either work or they don't anymore. The CPU is the one part I've no issue buying used, as long as I can test it beforehand. Motherboards, drives, even GPU's, I tend to avoid, because it's way easier for a seller to hide (intentionnally or not) critical flaws.
@computerheadquarters
@computerheadquarters 8 ай бұрын
While i agree with most of what you said, the "don't age" thing isn't necessarily 100% true. For a regular user, yeah i agree. But for a hardcore overclocker that was milking every last MHz etc and pushing the CPU to its limits day in and day out, manufacturers have claimed that the CPU will not last as long, or age faster.
@lamikal2515

@@computerheadquarters You're right, milking every last drip of performance out of a chip can "degrade" it, but the vast majority of said degradation will come in the form of "at some point you were able to hit xxxx MHz at a given voltage, now you have to settle for -100MHz at said voltage" I've been in that industry for almost 25 years, and I never saw a CPU dying on it's own. All the CPUs I've seen getting fried were busted by either a faulty mobo or PSU.

Some people (like me) have bought expensive motherboards back in the 8700k era, and now they want to keep the system and give it a little more lifespan. I didn't pay that much (my i9 9900k was about 290 USD) and I'm quite satisfied with the performance bump over my old i7 8700.

And the best thing is upgrade path to something like 14900 in the long run. @@computerheadquarters Selling doesn't mean you know anything really. Other than selling and or getting someone to spend money. You won't be there 2 to 5 years down the road for the person who's machine died early due to budget quality parts. Some people want their machines to last more than a few years. Especially these days and with the systems being so powerful the need to upgrade isn't so often anymore. So yeah just keep pushing those low quality parts to make that next sale. You sound like a lot of people on the PC Forums over the years giving horrible Information catering to the low budget buyers. Surprised you didn't recommend ram, that would have been some cheap generic brand? Same with maybe a $35 PSU and $25 SSD? In computer hardware you really do get what you pay for in general. @@computerheadquarters It really depends on what the machine is going to be used for. If it's an email machine it really doesn't matter that much as long as the parts are good quality. But for the higher end gaming machines things really do start to matter a lot. Voltage regulation and quality VRMS do matter. The base platform of a computer is the Motherboard and the PSU. If those two things are rock solid stable then the chance is better that the machine will handle just about anything thrown at it with little problem. It's not what the person is going to do right now with the PC, it's what their future plans are, upgrade path. (A lot of them LIE about that) Have a low end MB and PSU then start plugging in high end GPU's and CPU's and watch it start to have stability issues. Up to including the PSU frying the GPU, seen that happen a lot. PSU cooking the MB and GPU. With the pricing these days being outlandishly high still I can see why people could be getting the lower end boards. $200 for a $50 to $70 MB (Low Tier) as an example. Right now you just aren't getting anything for your money and won't until the prices come back down to normal again. There is no way I would even think about building anything these days with the pricing the way it is.

Simple answer : because they're completely fooled by intel's naming scheme. I had a talk the other day with my sister and asked her why she's choosen to let the pc building company put an 10900k in her rather new pc. Her answer : because who runs an i5 in 2022, DUH (Context : originally this pc was configured with an 12600k). The irony in this is that the cheaper 2022 i5 (12600/13600k) would've given her more performance than the more expensive i9 10900k but intel's dogshit naming scheme lets peasants believe that an i9 will always be better than an i5.

That being said though, their GPUs are (unfortunately) the ones to get imo. Can't imagine a life without Shadowplay anymore and Nvidia has a whole lot of other features going for them too where AMD simply can't compete. However, very happy to see that AMD has put Intel in their place already but i can't see that happening with Nvidia anytime soon unfortunately.

It's not always the case, a tuned 10900K can frequently be noticeably faster than a base 12600K in games, and more people have this cpu highly tuned up on average than 12600K users (flagship mindset vs more mainstream). But if not tuned, surely 12600K is better. However, 10900K is now said to be a superior chip latency wise, windows experience is going to feel better. Honestly, intel's first i9s were absolutely dope and ahead of the game. Can't believe that almost all cpus till 2021 whether from 10-11th gens or zen3 were just hovering around a 2018 cpu in gaming performance, and literally nothing could beat it in latency.
@NoName-st6zc
@NoName-st6zc 8 ай бұрын
@@HeartOfAdel Sorry but arguing with an overclocked 10900k against a stock 12600k is complete and utter nonsense. It's not like you can't overclock an 12600k so your argument is completely pointless and straight up invalid. Same goes for your latency argument. You certainly can't feel ANYTHING in that regard in windows and if you pair the 12600k with an decent DDR4 (Gear1) or DDR5 kit the same goes for gaiming so that's another completely invalid argument. Apart from that, everything between the 6700k (Skylake) and 10900k was far away from being ahead of its time. It was the same process all across just with a bunch of cores and a bit of clockspeeds added. That's as basic as it could get. The only thing that i would consider calling ahead of its time when speaking about gaming performance is the 7800X3D with its 3D V-Cache. Uses one third of the power draw of intels currently best performing gaming cpu (14900k) and even manages to beat it here and there and for the most part straight up matches it. That's what you call "ahead of its time". You could argue that intels P-Core E-Core hybrid architecture was ahead of its time as well but i wouldn't want to do that since that shit brings more trouble than anything else when it comes to gaming. Most people with Intel 12th Gen upwars are still playing with everything enabled not realizing that this CPU in a lot of games will perform heaps better with those stupid E-Cores disabled entirely. So yeah, great inovation. Now i have to benchmark every new game i want to play in order to figure out wether it runs better with e-cores disabled. Idiotic Concept...
@HeartOfAdel

@@NoName-st6zc I think I clearly stated that 12600K is faster, but more enthusiats own 10900K, so finding tuning on that one is a bit more habitual. Secondly, latency issues are widely talked about now in newer 12-14th gen cpus. Their new hybrid architecuture is in a way stepback from "pure" ring bus. 10900K has that thing clocking to the moon, stronger memory access and doesn't have ecore scheduling weirdness. There's plenty of reports now of degraded snappiness after upgrading from 9-10th gens to 12+. I'd advise you to do more research/maybe testing. 7800X3D is a very impressive cpu, and 3d cache itself is quite a break-through. But its level of performance is already matched by other cpus of the current era. And if you didn't guess, I was talking about i9-9900K, not 10900K (and even 10900K has the highest amount of p-cores of any Intel cpu with still top level latency, still quite exceptional). It absolutely utterly was ahead of its time (honestly the whole ring bus was) despite the skylake stagnation. I'm not sure if you recall, but almost all amd and even Intel's own cpus from 2020-2021 (before 12th gen) just overall fps matched a cpu that had been released 3 YEARS AGO, and by that day it remains the lowest latency 8p core+ chip. That is the longest king status. I highly doubt that in 2026, flasgship cpus are still gonna be around 7800x3d in games. That is, truly ahead of its time, hence the first i9 title reflecting that.

That is a solid question. There are a variety of factors to consider. #1 how much do you like the tinkering/building side of the hobby? If you love building new PCs then it's an easy answer to go with a new platform just for the fun of the "legos" of it. #2 do you have some money available to you that you are comfortable with spending on the upgrade? If money is tight right now i'd always recommend to save your money and keep gaming on what you got, and in this case, if you have ~$200 to spare for a 9900k but not ~$600 for a full combo like i7-14700k+Z790+32GB DDR5 Kit / 7800x3d+b650+32gb DDR5 kit - do what is right for your budget so that you're still comfortable paying bills and not racking up debt. #3 If you buy a 9900k it'll probably be used around ~$200 and there is always a chance you could use it for 6 months and then it dies and has no warranty. Everyone is different about that kind of thing and their risk tolerance, but it's something to consider. I personally have used many many used/refurb parts over the past 20 years with really good results so I don't hesitate to do it...but that is not financial advice.

Now you could argue that upgrading PC every 3-4years is expected, but if the current rig works, why not keep it that way? Purely for gaming purposes i9-9900 will be more than enough. If you are a professional and use PC for work, then chances are you are already on pretty new rig to keep up with hardware demand. But that's only my opinion.

My 9900k just died. I "upgraded" to a 9900k from an 8700k. I didn't really notice a performance increase. The 9900k didn't like being overclocked, the 8700k overclocked with ease. I only got 5 years out of my 9900k that cost me $750 AUD. I'm done with intel.

You probably overclocked on a non-water blocked build that's pretty much the reason it died.

@@tuberoyful It wasn't overclocked, it couldn't stay stable. I used an AIO.
