I've had an 08MY TDV6 Sport for 8 years now and have covered 330,000km. My Sport in general has been pretty reliable, but I've seen many die in that time due to poor servicing. There's a large number of potential failure areas: -oil pump housing can break due to weak casting. Unfortunately the part that breaks is the mounting point for the timing belt tensioner. So at a bare minimum the valvetrain will be damaged from that. There's an updated beefier part to prevent this. -when you do replace the timing belt, the tensioner bolt is M8 and torqued to only 24nm, which doesn't feel like enough. Hence it gets overtightened often - sometimes enough to snap the bolt after a length of time. -the oil filter comes out with the housing when being replaced, however it doesn't go back in the same way - it has an outlet spigot that locates into the block, then the cap gets tightened over the top. Catches many mechanics out and causes low oil pressure - if left it will screw the engine. They changed the design for the later 3.0 to prevent this. -plastic coolant manifold on top of the engine should be replaced every 100k km. If not, it can crack along the seam and dump all of your coolant in short order. -The airbag struts are way overengineered and don't fail often, but the pump will at some stage wear out. You replace it with an AMK compressor for a fairly reasonable price. -The torque converter definitely is a pretty high stressed part and will start to fail from about 200k km. -For me, a nut fell off the starter motor, preventing the car from turning over. That's the only time it ever didn't start. Otherwise, they are great cars, great to drive and very capable on and off road. I've stayed on top of the maintenance and hence mine has probably been the most reliable 4x4 in my group of friends, which is exclusively Jap brands apart from the RRS.

Not to be rude but the example you was driving is the kind of examples am seeing around my neck of the woods. High mileage, super cheap and modified up to the max. They are good looking cars but certainly around here their starting to become common. Driven by Lemonade Larrys thinking they are Champaign Charlie’s

Here in the US the parts and labor on one of those are absolutely insane. You might buy one for $10K but the first repair bill will be at least that much.

I’ve got a 2006 sport, love everything about it, a few quirks, like the brake light switch is not very reliable, and it sets off the HDC fault engine light, cheap fix nothing wrong with the transmission or suspension, have that scanned and save yourself a lot of money.
@mitchelltaylor518
@mitchelltaylor518 3 жыл бұрын
Cheap because they're expensive to run, highly unreliable and expensive to fix when they do go wrong. Simple bangernomics. Just because they're a sub £3000 car these days don't forget they were £60k plus when new. And they still have the repair costs of a 60k plus off roader.
@mitchelltaylor518
@mitchelltaylor518 3 жыл бұрын
@Christ Bk Plenty of articles online and lots of videos to back my point. You don't need to have owned something to have a view on it. Not saying all Range Rovers will be unreliable but they don't have a good reputation (reputation has an influence on used values!) and parts will be more expensive than many other vehicles when they're needed. So yes says the person who's never owned one 👍
@AudiophileStooge
@AudiophileStooge 3 жыл бұрын
As a Range Rover owner, can’t stress enough service history. Also, airbags, air suspension valve bodies, the compressor, water pump at 100K, do every service ON TIME or you will pay for it - gearbox, transfer case WILL FAIL if you don’t do that service on time. Diffs also need to be done one time. If you’re looking at a car and these services are way over due, WALK AWAY. I love my Range but mine was dealer serviced all its life - this is an ideal situation and I’ve still spent a mint on upkeep. Remember, you’re paying 10-15k for an 85-100k vehicle and it still needs to be serviced like a $100k car, it’s not for the cheap to the financially challenged.

Yeah man just got a 2006 Overfinch version of the sport and have spent a couple bags on it. Gearbox ⚙️ Service should be done if it wasn’t serviced before. Also intercooler pipe tends to work itself loose or even splits. Otherwise silky smooth and a real head turner 💯

I have owned a few LR since 1996, and I love them . Not particularly unreliable or expensive to fix, just regular maintenance and they are fine. I had a first generation discovery I bought new and traded in at 90k miles. No issue whatsoever.Then I had a LR3 from 2005 to 2015 ,after 130k miles of trouble free driving , I traded that in for a used range Rover sport (2012). So far so good. No issue. Great vehicles.

I have a 2006 Sports Supercharge. I never drive it hard. But I think I need to get it remapped. I'm getting around 15mpg. I dont have problem with airbags, as when I bought it . It already been put on Springs. But the drive is still very comfortable. It also has LPG, with flash Lube fitted, as it has the Jag engine. I believe the valves are softer than the BMW engine.

I think they’re alright if you have the skills to repair it yourself and do the maintenance but generally people buy them because they’re cheap and want to look good in a Range Rover and can’t afford to fix it if it goes wrong which it probably will.

My mate had a V10 5.0 Tdi Touareg. Fabled to be one of the most expensive money pits ever if things go wrong. It did! It required 2 new turbos and a full engine out job. Think of what a regular car would cost and times it by 4 .He sold it for peanuts and bought a Range Rover 4.4 V8 Tdi. A car even more well known for being the biggest way to spunk your money down the toilet if they go pear shaped. So THAT is why they are cheap.

I had one for 3yrs. Great cars but when they go wrong it’s mega expensive to fix. Most car garages don’t want to touch them. £800 to replace a control module, these have 23 of them around the car. Air suspension goes, your finances go aswell. Apart from that, they’re great cars. 👍🏻

I spoke to a recovery driver once who said he has picked up more RRSports than any other car . Everyone who gets one sells it within six months when they realise the whole shell has to be lifted off the chassis to do any repairs ,which means you need to take it to a RR specialist and it costs major money . Don't buy one .

Normally once a 2005 Range Rover sport reaches 80,000 it blows up. Also the last 2005 I owned took off on its own so I had to get my wife a new one. She was parking on the street and the vehicle drove forward on its own.

Range Rover is a brand that I’d put with country class. Or at least traditionally. Typically driven by those who wear Daytona’s and Ralph Lauren Gillet’s, not by some call centre employee who sells weed on the side and has a collection of fake stone island.

I had a v8 rrs , awesome car to drive etc but just too many problems, one after another after another, egr valves, discs, mapping, turbo pipes, nothing but cash eaters. Id never entertain another one.

Can you imagine the crashes that has caused, where other road users have turned there heads, say WTF...... He broke the record how many times you can say 'autobiography' within 2 minutes. Take off the red faff, remove the fake cardon, replace the cream leather seats And that stereo.
