We are starting to get quite a few C8’s in the shop now and a lot of calls about doing muffler deletes or “straight pipe”. This video explains why the C8 doesn’t work with those like previous generations of the Corvette.

California only had one year of the stricter no more “fix-it ticket” sound violation. The law was repealed due to the fact that sound is a subjective matter and law enforcement cannot determine what’s too loud. Even using DB meters that some departments had does not work as they will pick up ambient sound from the environment. As far as emissions, we do everything from the “cat-back” which is completely legal.

I'm not trying to get anyone upset, just asking a question. This is a very informative video but it dosn't really answer the question. Clearly the installation is more involved but the price of parts remains significantly more costly. I get that C8 systems are all catback where you can do axle back on say a C7 but a C7 axle back plus X pipe is still less costly than a c8 system. Material cost can't be the answer. Perhaps engineering cost is part of the answer but since one of the selling points is that 3rd party systems are less bulky, fitting the system in the available space shouldn't have presented a huge engineering challenge. Anyone have a reason other than they charge more because they can? Are the 180 degree bends that much more difficult to justify the cost difference?
@mufflertech
@mufflertech Жыл бұрын
Hi Hank. Thanks for the thoughtful inquiry. Design and R&D certainly play a part in the overall cost. Some of the cost is also attributed to the more complex build vs a standard exhaust setup to a front engine car. Most of it has to do with the number of units that are going to be sold. The C7 and earlier cars had a much larger audience for aftermarket systems and because of this the cost per unit is way down.

The higher price comes with the use of a single word in the sentence that comes before or after describing whatever the item might be, and that word is “”Corvette””. although I do suspect a slight premium is added to cover the cost of all the free units that they flood the KZfaq influencers with to put a positive spin on their products.
@mufflertech
@mufflertech 6 ай бұрын
Kevin thanks for your input! I’m afraid I have to challenge your position here. The word “Corvette” has nothing to do with price rather its the low production numbers and the complexity of the needed product to fit a mid engined sports car. Products for front engined Corvette’s were dramatically cheaper as they weren’t nearly as complicated to design which made them more accessible which allowed higher production which lowered the cost even more. Chevy has made a real mid engined contender in the sports car market, this unfortunately creates exhaust systems and other components that have a higher price tag. Thanks for watching!

Decibel’s are not measured like a normal progression of volume. In other words if you said something is at 90% volume and you increased it to 100% that would only be 10% louder. DB’s don’t work like that. Here’s a paragraph I found on google that explains: Decibels are measured logarithmically. This is a way of counting or measuring something that increases rapidly, or exponentially. For example, every increase of 10 dB on the decibel scale is equal to a 10-fold increase in sound pressure level (SPL).Dec 27, 2021

If you’ve ever tried to produce an aftermarket part in multiples you’d realize how much it actually costs. There is zero performance benefits from the “x pipe” on this exhaust system. It’s purely a sound thing. You have to engineer an exhaust system with many dyno hours and time to get any performance benefit from an X pipe. Equal length headers provided way more performance benefit on and N/A car. On a turbo set up that x pipe would hurt performance even more.
@mufflertech
@mufflertech 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct about the turbos in most cases, you don’t want pulse disruption on a dual TT set up. You are mistaken with an NA application. There’s lots of data and dyno results that prove an X-pipes advantage.
@mikeeagle2653
@mikeeagle2653 2 жыл бұрын
@@mufflertech the advantage of an X pipe is at most 8-10 hp. That’s all. And the only way to get that is by engineering the exhaust system. Simply sticking an x pipe any where randomly in the exhaust system won’t do shit. The distance from the engine the length of pipe the size of pipe all come into play to get any exhaust scavenging benefits. There’s just a KZfaq trend of people making X pipe exhausts and people see them on expensive cars like lambos and people just want that look. They haven’t a clue whether it works or not. The worst is seeing these have two turbos 12” away from each other and then stick and X pipe right in the two down pipes. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️. And then argue that it helps. It’s ridiculous

@@mufflertech seeing a 5 hp gain is simply a waste of time and money. Equal length headers with a real merge collector provide way mor3 HP the and X pipe could ever. And I’ve been in the industry for the last 35 yrs. so if you have “experience “. Then you wouldn’t be going back and forth disagreeing with what I wrote. I also guarantee that the test that you saw a difference on there were other factors that were changed also. The fact that you said “you’ve stuck them in randomly” show you don’t know how they work. The the way they are supposedly work create any scavenging is to be at just the right distance from the engine to perfectly be timed with crossing over to scavenge the next cylinders exhaust pulse So randomly doesn’t work. Car manufacturers spend millions engineering exhaust systems. That’s how the X pipe even came about.
