That ultimative final boss challenge is the right thing to do for real PC enthusiasts. The PC platform offers thousands of hardware ways to reach a goal and likewise GNU Linux does offer the freedom in software customization. You are going to fall down at the beginning, but never give up. Stand up and try again with a different strategy. With patience, passion and fun you learn until maybe one day you finally became a true master of the game! Then you look back and laugh like conan the barbarian about the silly noob mistakes, you have made and ride on your GNU and with Linux into the sunset. PS: That fantasy and metaphors are silly, awkward and embarrassing, right? Therefore please leave a like :D LOL

The hardest time I've ever had setting up a printer on Linux: I had an old Epson inkjet that had separate CMYBK cartridges. The physical order of the cartridges in the machine was KCMYB, and the driver didn't know that, so things that were meant to be cyan were pulling from the key cartridges, magenta from the cyan, and so on. The printer configuration tool in Ubuntu LITERALLY had the cartridge order as an option. Not in some esoteric config file buried in a cryptic folder, just a dropdown menu. Click, click, test, done.

The funny part is you partly have Apple to thank for the good printing support on Linux. They hired the lead developer of CUPS and supported its development for years. Printing on MacOS and most Linux distros is CUPS under the hood. And setting up a CUPS server on Linux that can do bonjour/mDNS printing is super easy.

@@konstakuosmanen I think it depends on your exact printer. If there's no driver, then obviously it won't work. But pretty much any laser/business printer will work under Linux for the fact that many businesses use CUPS for printing. I have a 10 year old Canon color laser that requires a .deb/.rpm from Canon be installed, and then it works. I run a CUPS server for it so I can print from any computer, even my iPhone. If you have a spare raspberry pi, this is a great use for it.

It's so funny that printers have come a long way on Linux. It used to be absolutely miserable in the late 2000s and early 2010s from what I remember when I was using Linux for the first time on Ubuntu with a USB fax/printer we used to use. This is probably a very niche case, but nowadays with a modern wifi printer I bought a few years back, Windows 10 for some reason wants nothing to do with it even after installing drivers. Not my desktop or my parent's laptop. Had my parents email me what they wanted printed and my Android phone just printed it. Tried a Linux USB and that worked too. I even made sure the spooler service was forced on in Windows and it just didn't want to work. I even tried direct USB, forcing to print to its IP, nothing. I just have my parents email me a pdf of what they want printed nowadays so I can do it from my phone.

I had absolutely no issues with switching and everything just. Well worked. But my buddy had all the same kind of weird issues and I was blaming it on user error. But after seeing Linus have weird issues and get frustrated with how he investigates it makes a lot more sense. His attempted switch was 2 years ago and it was almost the same, whereas I've been using it for about 8 years now as a daily driver.

I think technical level also plays a big role since even though I have friends who know Windows and Mac machines in and out decently well (some to advanced levels), they find Linux to be cumbersome because of the terminal or things that are just done different on Linux (that they don't even think about). I have a friend who can get around Ubuntu pretty well as long as a GUI is involved, but when anything terminal comes up it can be hours of searching for solutions. Meanwhile I have an easier time because I work as a software developer and have come to learn that the terminal or anything similar (CMD in Windows) is your friend for any error. Since it likely gives you an error code, message, or whatever that someone somewhere probably already has solved. But my friends who don't do that for their job see a scary wall of errors and just give up since they have no idea what it is or even how to parse an error message. I forced myself to daily drive Arch because I thought that if I can get it to work and get everything setup I'll force me to learn how to fix anything if it breaks. But not everyone wants/has the time to learn all the in-outs of linux and just switch back to Mac or Windows (I am guilty myself of doing that several times).

Heh: I came to the same conclusion about printing being Microsoft's fault, but in my case it's due to being a long-time Mac user. Even back in the 90s using, I think, Novell NetWare in a big computer lab, the Macs handled printing just fine. Since CUPS, it's only gotten better. Recently, a librarians group I'm in was sharing their biggest work frustrations and printers were at or near the top of the list. And my thought was "really‽ That's still a problem?" I haven't had any real printer problems-hardware or software-in probably a decade. After a little discussion it became clear that all the people with problems were managing MSWindows computers. I mean, a secure networked printing system that also has to handle accounts, charge for printing, and allow users to connect to it is a challenge-but most of their problems weren't in the print server or networking; they were either the printers themselves or happening in the computers (i.e., OS/driver problems).

its the same thing with the printer my parents have. on windows it works kinda on its own, the brother driver is from 2014 and is required for some extras features. On linux it jsut works. no driver and no messing with settings. it just prints.

Quite understand the priorities involved. I would have expected that, using your home time, you would have used about a month to chose the distribution you wanted to drive for the test. I personally used up about three months for that task, which included finding a new Email client, and trying to migrate our existing Windows Live Mail caches to Linux. Wife wanted all of her 8-deep folders to be intact which was not fun at all. Then there was an absolutely huge genealogy data base to migrate, and that is still an item three years after we went to Linux as our daily drivers. Bottom line is that old Windows system is still available for the genealogy work.

This is how my experience with peripherals has been in general on Linux. It seems like it would be the opposite way, but stuff like printers and bluetooth basically never have any problems for me, whereas on Windows they were constantly breaking and were very annoying to set up on a new PC.

I heard someone say, (and it was probably Linus on a different video) that sometimes to find what you need on google you need to log out of whatever google account you have or log out of the chrome browser so that google finds what you’re looking for and not what it _thinks_ you’re looking for based on what it knows about your search history.

I think Linus lacks the perspective of being a new/basic Windows user. Having used windows as a power user since you were a kid is a built in advantage for Windows in ease-of-use comparisons, even if you are consciously trying to be unbiased.

I remember the days I was learning about Linux, a decade ago... And I see a lot of similarities. And then Internet was much slower, and not so developed, it was a bit harder to learn. But as I learned about Linux, I became more accustomed to different desktop environments. Today I probably can catch up with the new OS, any kind of OS, in an hour or two.

As a student, Linux was fun to use but I had to keep Windows in a Dualboot for some university assignments that required Windows-only programs. As a professional, Linux is a great OS to program, but if I need to get something done asap and it's easier in Windows, I won't think twice before switching. Linux for me is a great secondary OS, but I could never live without having a Windows installed just in case. WSL also changed the game for programming in Windows and I can probably see myself just using Windows + WSL than just Linux.

As a shifter to Linux from Windows 11, I both tried Manjaro and Pop OS.... User-friendly wise, POP OS wins hands down for me as both my daily driver and for gaming. Gets the job done fast... Manjaro is good but the time it needs to fiddle some settings just for games is too time consuming clearly not for beginners... So I am sticking with POP for the meantime.

Printing isn't an issue on Linux (most of the time), but oddly enough scanning always gets frustrating to set-up on Linux. My HP scanner just loves to uninstall itself every time there's a major update. So what I need to do is run "sudo sane-find-scanner" to tell Linux that I have a scanner, then launch the HP device manager to re-download the driver. If there's something I'm missing, please do tell 'cause it always annoys me.

Quick history, 1)For reasons unimportant to this story, in 2012 I'm unemployed. 2) In 2014. still looking for a full-time job (and trying to make a little cash on the internet), my Windows 7 is taken over by a rootkit. Called Microsoft and they tell me my solution is to buy a new product key. I don't have the cash. Finally find Ubuntu, before MS totally wipes me off the Internet. GNU/Linux becomes my daily driver for the next three years. I finally get old enough to collect Social Security, buy a laptop. I started out gaming on computers on an Atari XL in the 80's. (Insert Boomer joke here!) Command line doesn't intimidate me, just have to be careful. My experience of different OS's have made me appreciate modern computing. Thinking about making my gaming rig a GNU/Linux rig. Very interested in this series.

Here's a challenge / video idea: Samsung Dex or any android tablet as a daily driver, in combination with a PC/Laptop. Printing was a big reason I went with, and remain with, Mint. My 2009 made printer just worked when plugged in. Unlike Debian 10, wherein I never figured out how to get the sucker going. In fact, I used to daily Drive Deb 10 but also had Mint installed for basically printing only. Until I eventually realized that was incredibly annoying. Doi

I'm reluctant to question one of the few things you really liked about Linux, but even though connecting a Linux machine to a printer on the network is super convenient like you say, actually connecting a new printer to a wireless network in the first place is NOT. In fact i had to use a Windows laptop to do it for mine 🙂. It's because some printers don't have a built in screen or buttons and the proprietary software to configure the printer usually does not exist on Linux. Now that it's connected, Cups is able to do configuration. I guess there are ways to set up the connection through Cups too, but it sure did not seem easy.

Wow, I would immediately return any printer that pulled that sort of crap on me. There's no reason why it couldn't just first-boot as a WiFi AP that hosts a configuration portal that you can access via any web browser on the network - ie. exactly how many IoT devices work.

I've found that Windows handles network printers much better than local printers. Plug my Epson into a USB port and it can smell my desperation as a hunt down a DVD drive and the driver disc because I haven't used it since I moved. Plug it into my switch and 3 minutes after clicking search for printers Windows Update had the driver installed and ready to go.
