Yes, even old Yankee stadium had poles. Fenway Park and Wrigley still do. But none of the new stadiums do. Absolutely none.

The thing is, the only reason the Coliseum (Flavian Amphitheater) is in the shape it is now is because Italian rulers around it took great quantities of the coliseums’ concrete for building material, as well as fires and earthquakes. If it wasn’t for that, it would be in almost perfect condition today.

2:40 "When you look at the Colosseum now, it's crumbling". The Colosseum in Rome was built 1940 years ago. I've been there twice, and they still let thousands of tourist wonder around in it unescorted, I would like to see the condition of any modern stadium in the United States in 1940 years.

The Colosseum was fine as long as games were held there, which, per request of the Pope at the time, were ended under the rule of the Ostrogothic King of Italy, Flavius Theodoric. Upon falling into disuse, it was turned into a storage yard for the Commune di Roma, which by then had depopulated from a high of over a half million in the Pax Romana to about 30,000. Later on, stones were taken from it for use in other building projects in and around Roma, the Colosseum didn't fall apart, it was partly disassembled and/or demolished. There was a disastrous fire in AD 217 which took out the upper roof and canopy structure, it was not completely rebuilt until AD 240. The building did suffer from earthquakes, Theodosius II had it renovated after a bad quake in 443. Since the Church didn't want it to be restored to its original purpose, another earthquake in 1349 which caused the partial collapse which was never restored.

I have been in Herculaneum, which like Pompei was covered under lava. It is better preserved. It was a small roman city, mabe 5000 inhabitants. The quality of the construction work was stunning. I whould go so far to say, that the houses where better built than many buildings today. That was the first time I really understood, that great civilisation perished, and why the time after that is called the dark ages. Humanity reached hights in the past, only to fall back to lower levels of developement through war and diseases.

minor points to an excellent vid: The Romans DID make wood stadiums... its just that the concrete ones are the ones that lasted. In fact the worst stadium catastrophes ever were not the various horrific disasters like at Hillsborough or Bradford City. Not by a long shot. There was a wooden stadium made for gladiator games just outside of rome (Fidenae) that collapsed just about exactly 2000 years ago which apparently killed a minimum of 20,000 people. Also, the fact that the Colisuem is crumbling and doesn't look much like it did almost 2000 years ago is certainly at least partially due the fact that the marble overlays were long ago stripped from the facility. The fact that so many roman arenas and coliseums are still around and basically structurally sound is a testament to the lasting power of concrete.

Definitely one of the cool designs of Century Link Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks. A narrow lot necessitated a smaller stadium footprint, so they made two huge bridge-like arches running parallel to the sidelines way up high that essentially suspend the nosebleeds up on top of the terrace and half the lower bowl. Really puts them close to the field and makes opposing players feel like the hostile fans are stacked up right over them. Curved metal roof up in there really reflects that crowd noise straight onto the field.

Years ago (and I wish I knew the source) I read that Charles Comiskey opted for the poles in Old Comiskey's design, to save money, even though the cantilever stadium design was offered. Just think of how Old Comiskey would have been loved if it had not had those girders sticking up all over the place! I loved the park as it was, but you took a chance when you bought tickets. I had your experience or close to it several times. Yuck! Same at Wrigley and so many others. And they could have prevented it! Cheapskates!

Awesome video. Contrary to popular belief, gladiator games in the Roman Empire rarely ended in death, and if it did happen, it was usually by complete accident. At the time, gladiators were trained by entertainment companies, and the owners didn't want them to die because it was costly to train a replacement. Also, the games back then were their version of the WWE, purely for entertainment. I took a Roman civilization class in college and Adam Ruins Everything has a great video on it.

Maple Leaf Gardens, the former home of the Toronto Maple Leafs, didn't use poles and pillars for its design either, despite being built in 1931. The trick with the Gardens is that the entire bowl of seating works as a flying buttress, giving support to the exterior walls. The 4 corners of the building then work as arches to hold up the roof, giving the building its iconic domed appearance and high ceiling. This didn't change even after a renovation in the '60s added a second mezzanine at the north and south sides of the arena, although it did block out the entrance windows that provided natural sunlight, which was rectified with additional lighting. Conn Smythe, the Leafs owner, designed it this way to both build it quickly in time for the next hockey season [it broke ground and opened only 6 months apart] and because he didn't want to repeat the same mistakes that led to all the obstructed seating at the old Boston Garden. The only downside was that seating placement in the upper corners was a bit awkward.
