Kathleen actually did apologize years ago on her instagram story. I remember watching it. There was also a hurricane happening in Florida so she was also mentioning how she felt scared. People felt she was deflecting the issue by mentioning the hurricane.

I remember her doing the IG story apology but I don't get why these people feel the need to use stories that disappear in 24 hours to apologize for things that are serious. Just makes it feel like they don't care about whatever they're "apologizing" for

I’ve personally decided that racist behavior cannot be solved by a “sorry” anymore 🤷🏾♀️ thinking another person isn’t human and doesn’t deserve rights isn’t a life phase.

@missmartha_ 99% of people over the age of 15 know how bad “one word” is the level that they care varies wildly. The level that you care shows your lack of character or education. But like I said most people already know it’s bad so it’s safe to assume that they’re a bad person if they use the word. Just because you don’t care about millions of people telling you the impact of the word doesn’t make it less impactful. I think that’s what people fail to understand.

@@lateberry why does it matter that black people are using the word? presuming you aren’t black, why can you not take it as fact that a majority of black people do not want you to ever utter that word and doing so contributes to their dehumanisation, and therefore discrimination and, in a very real sense, perpetuates the trend of hate crimes leading to our deaths. it’s very simple. if you don’t care about how badly the word affects black people, that’s literally a sign that you don’t care for black people and their lives. i’m black and if I went the rest of my life never saying that word it would affect my life a grand total of 0%. so the fascination with it for other racial groups baffles me and is the equivalent of an immature child at someone else’s birthday party crying over not being able to open a gift. except it contributes to the literal systemic oppression and murder of a whole ethnic minority. even in the most simple, human terms, i just want you to consider the fact that i as a black person detest it when that word is used by non black people and it deeply hurts me. in the same way you wouldn’t call your friend a mean name if you knew they would be hurt by it, I would deeply hope that any stranger could respect me even on a basic level by refraining from using a slur with one of the darkest histories of human suffering, especially since it neither hinders nor affects your life at all.

@@lateberry Legally no it's not a thing to ban other people from saying a word, but there are plenty of racial slurs in other countries that people face major scrutiny for if said. The usage of the word by the people it's being used against isn't the same thing as everyone throwing it around willy nilly. I also don't know why that's hard for people to wrap their heads around. For example, you might call your friends bitches or yourself a bitch as a joke or to parody the meaning which I guess is also kind of a joke. However, you wouldn't call your grandma that word. People also don't make jokes about having cancer when they've never gone through that disease. They know it would be offensive, insensitive, etc. Yet, those same people get so entitled about the N-Word it's baffling. This isn't the first time your "freedom of speech" is being challenged just don't say it, it's not difficult.

@@lateberry Again most people are educated about slavery, racism, and words from those eras. The normalization of white people saying the N-word doesn't come from watching black people say it it's from watching white people say it. Just like learning about war doesn't make people violent, but the glamorization and laissez-faire attitude could. Yes we are all human but our lives and experiences are all different. Black and white Americans don't live in the same America. You can't think of it as a random group of people being able to do one thing and another random group doing the same. We're taught too often to be color blind when that effectively erases history and important social contexts, and creates problems like these. So what a bunch of black people are saying it, you can't, end of story.

@@lateberry I personally think if someone has said the word years ago and has clearly changed as a person they don't deserve to be cancelled. However, if they have an awful racist past like Jafar Starburst or Shame Dustbin then yes that cannot be fixed

What people like Jeffree Star do is name a lipstick shade “Problematic” so that if one ever googled the words “Jeffre Star Problematic”, the thing that comes up is that lipstick and not the bad behavior and scandals. This is a known thing that a lot of brands have done. I’m sure there’s a term for it.

People tend to forget that an apology is not for you, the apology is for the people that you hurt with your actions/words and it's up to them to accept it, and even when they have accepted it they still need time to heal. That's why the majority of youtuber apologies suck, they start with "I am sorry... but..." and they proceed to make excuses, they do it to save their behinds and not because they really care. As someone said, they are sorry that they got caught, not because they hurt someone.

coming at this from a different angle: isn’t it weird for hannah to be criticizing an apology that wasn’t meant for her? she’s saying it’s insufficient which really isn’t her place either. i think what happens is she gets woke points for calling it out but in that way we are selectively applying logic. i’ve seen at least 1 black creator share a very different opinion about kathleen than the one shared here so..... that’s worth recognizing.

I truly like Kathleen but I’m so tired of people using “being drunk” as a excuse for bad behavior. I’ve been drunk and never said racial slurs. If people say that with a camera on, what do they say with the camera off? Very disappointed

Exactly. I've been blackout, wet the hotel bed, almost get hospitalized drunk at a wedding. The worst I did was cry while looking at a cute guy because he was so cute and text my ex that I wish we got married (luckily he thought it was funny). I didn’t use slurs because they’re not in my vocabulary and never have been

honestly, i feel more and more that we “accept” apologies when it’s people that we like more than others. because honestly we can’t know what is on other people’s hearts so we can only guess that they are truly sorry and regret their actions

@@sa-mi1un It’s also a thing that kids then go through a phase (some of them clearly never grow out of it) where when they learn about “sorry” they run around hitting people saying they’re sorry and then an adult has to explain to them that another option is just NOT hitting people to begin with and the kids usually respond with “oh. I didn’t think of that”

I also think a big problem we as audience members have gotten used to repeating is accepting apologies from influencers when it wasn’t an apology for us in the first place. Like how many of us white people will see an Influencer apologize for using a racial slur and then some of us will be like “you know what? You seem genuinely sorry so it’s ok I forgive you” and then I have to step back and scold myself and be like “uh uh honey that apology wasn’t for YOU so stop accepting apologies on behalf of the people that were really hurt like minorities”

@@Bridenbrad exaaaaaaactly... i’m obviously white and i remember when that happened and i was a teenager i thought well, she has never showed any type of micro aggressions before, i don’t think she’s really racist so i’ll continue following her. i totally forgot about it until her stories the other day. i still don’t know where i stand because i’ve never seen her being racist other than this incident and actually have seen her trying to be more and more inclusive so i genuinely don’t know now

As people have mentioned in the comments, Kathleen did apologize when this originally happened. It was not well received, but it did occur. Just think this is worth highlighting for accuracy.

She may have “apologized” but was literally making excuses in the same breath. Also, her brother’s response is enough to make me side eye both of them. I’m a Black woman and in the nail community. There are way too many other Black owned brands to support.

In my family we have a saying, “sorry doesn’t fix it.” We taught our kids that anyone can say sorry and not mean it, but what are you going to do to fix the thing you did wrong? At this point, I think apology videos just bring creators more attention and views and they’re not actually sorry at all. 🤷🏻♀️

To quote someone far more intelligent than myself, "The best apology is changed behavior." In other words, the best way to show that you regret actions that hurt others is to avoid the hurtful behavior, learn from it, and do better. Take actions to show growth.

My grandma used to always say this, and while I agree with the sentiment, when I was just a young kid who was genuinely sorry I made honest mistakes, it sucked having her always reply with "sorry isn't good enough". MalibuDollFace made a great video when this happened. It really spoke more to the relationship between Latinx and Black communities, and how a lot of latinx youth feel justified in saying the N word because they live life in such close proximity to blackness and have never been checked on it until they reach adulthood. Also, let’s be honest, if Jacklyn Hill was a more genuine person, this would have NEVER been public knowledge. All JH had to do (AS AN ALLY) was check her privately and not post the clip. Villa nixing Kathleen 4 years later is just unnecessary and does nothing for her Black supports imo 🤷🏾♀️

I also feel as though influencers view “cancelling” as an attack, when it’s really just their fans trying to hold them accountable. I think if they approached the situation with the mindset of “these people support me, I should try and be better”, apologies wouldn’t be so trash

@@Ikine557 I used to watch her too, she called out vegans who were peddling really dangerous ideas and debunking a lot of misconceptions about veganism. But then during the BLM movement she basically said it wasn’t important. Then recently she made a video about how capitalism was compatible with veganism, despite the fact that farm animals are treated poorly as a result of capitalism. And for the current situation, not only is she going to bat for The Vegan Teacher, like I said, in the video she published yesterday, she said that because she’s white and has a philosophy degree, she has an equal say on racism, and that PEOPLE WHO ARE AFFECTED BY RACISM ARE EMOTIONALLY COMPROMISED AND THUS MEANS THEIR OPINIONS ARE BIASED. Uh, yeah, miss White Liberal, because their lives are at stake! Also. She thinks that it’s racist to say her opinions on racism aren’t as valid as a black person’s. So.

Another problem with many of these apologies is they frame themselves as a victim or sympathetic character instead of a willing agent in their mistake. The centring on their feelings about the situation rather than their actions and the people they hurt reinforces that they are doing this less out of regret and more out of covering their butt.

reasons why Jenna legitimately had the best apology video 1. she showed videos of what she did 2. she explained why she did it and didn't see it as wrong at the time 3. she did it unprompted, there was no drama, there weren't really any call outs, she saw some people upset by her past behavior and addressed it 4. shes obviously shown major growth since she made those videos

And she left the internet! While that was really sad and I miss her content a lot... she knew it was time for her to move on and just go live her life and enjoy it without being a public figure anymore. Shane honestly could’ve done something similar and then left the platform AND other platforms and yeah we’d still be like ew you’re gross because what he has done is... just so much worse but at least it would’ve been the most graceful and respectful way he could’ve handled it. I hope Jenna is doing well and is enjoying life❤️ I wish we had more genuine people like her on YT.

The literal only nitpick I had with her video is that she said "Im sorry IF I hurt you." I just dont like that phrase because it feels deflecting, just say "Im sorry that I hurt you." Besides that, I still love Jenna and watch her videos even if shes gone

In my opinion “cancel culture” has always been political. People online can be harassed, threatened or “canceled” for any reason-but (barring unique situations like the woman who hit her dog in camera) it’s racists, homophobes, etc who get labeled “victims” of cancel culture and have people come to their defense. Sooner or later people need to realize “cancel culture” is just “pc culture” with a different hat on. It’s not about growth and change it’s about protecting certain bigots from consequences.

I’m always amazed at how one group accepts an “apology” meant for another. She shouldn’t have said it and her delay in addressing it is telling, immature, and shows the level of disrespect she has for the Black community.

I actually followed Kathleen on twitter at the time this happened and I remember seeing tweets (which I assume have since been deleted) of her trying to kind of justify her use of the word Bc she was “angry” and it’s a “slang term” she hears a lot. I was disappointed Bc I was subscribed to her and the first video back after she didn’t address anything and then all the comments were people being like “awww poor girl you can really tell she’s upset over this” Bc she was low energy. She seemed more scared than upset IMO. Honestly it feels part of the price of being a black person on the internet is that at some point ur non-black faves will disappoint u by being racist!

Yes! I remember this too! It was so defensive and trying to downplay it because of a cultural thing? It was so strange. She also confirmed (if i remember correctly) that she uses that word regularly in life because of those tweets because lots of people were pointing out that for her to have dropped it so casually it would have to exist in her regular lexicon. Her tweets backed that up imo.

That last point is why I try not to get too attached to creators. Too many of them turned out to have racist tendencies and so many people outside of the black community like to ignore it and keep these people on the platform.

@@cynthiaisako because in the video you can clearly hear Danny, KL’s husband, saying “Don’t post that”. Also Kathleen was drunk and prolly didn’t know she was being recorded. (she had the VR set on) Not defending KL, but if “my friend” posted a video of me doing something inappropriate to their millions of followers , knowingly or unknowingly, is a shady move.

so i’m in the nail community and that’s where I saw the movement for kathleen to apologize and a lot of black people were upset at how she handled the situation and how she didn’t address it on her youtube and then she did address it with that ig story but people were still asking for it on youtube specifically. But Kathleen did apologize at the time. She tweeted, posted an Instagram post w text apologizing (edit: it’s still up I just checked) and she went on her stories and mentioned it. I remember watching it. You keep saying she never addressed it at the time those years ago, but she did. The issue wasn’t that she didn’t apologize at all...it was that she didn’t apologize WELL. I do remember seeing that many of her black followers and supporters felt it was not a genuine/good enough apology at the time and as I am not black it was not my apology to accept, so I took their lead and understood the desire for her to expand on that apology. But she never did. Until this week. I do agree she should put an apology up on her KZfaq channel. This summer would have been a good time for her to make a video about the subject, I think it would have been received well. Not sure this IG apology will go down as being well received.

I generally agree with your points but I wonder if, like in the case with Kathleen lights, just bc they don’t put their apology on their biggest platform that it doesn’t mean that they havent grown. Kathleen has worked to put the light on makeup and products created by POC, and there have not been any incidents (as far as I am aware) of her saying things like that. And while I do agree we need to be critical of people’s apologies, I don’t think having a lackluster apology for a previous mistake / previous bad action in the past should completely discredit the progress they may have already made. And just bc an apology is good doesn’t mean that it will mean a lot if they haven’t changed or if they have been disrespectful to people behind the scenes or in their content. Basically I think their should be balance somewhat of their actions overall and their apology.

I remember the Kathleenlights thing. It's the reason I stopped watching her. I remember her brother attacking people in comments and Kathleen deflecting on her insta story. I also remember no one showed any real anger at Kathleen everyone attacked Jaclyn saying she was jealous and trying to ruin Kathleen's career bc Kathleen's husband told her not to post the sc and she posted it anyway. I remember Kathleen being like sorry I know I'm not supposed to say that but its something I've grown up saying im songs and what not and it pissed me off enough to completely stop following her everywhere after being a Stan for years lol.

Unpopular opinion: I’d rather have an influencer not say anything at all about a scandal than force them to make a half assed apology that’ll get ridiculed anyway. Biggest KZfaqr example is Tana. She basically was forced to apologize by Twitter/management etc with the micro-aggression scandal, but she clearly didn’t give a single fuck about it. Her not addressing the issue shows how she truly feels, which IMO, is way better than her being fake woke about the situation and her actions.

i feel like there is such a catch 22 sometimes because if you screw up and you genuinely try to be better and change and you post about the ways youre doing that, people still say "oh youre only doing this to make yourself look better." what do you think is a way to do that and genuinely make changes, but still show that you are doing so? not to get applause to but to say "hey look im really trying. i want to be better"

Personally I think a video that apologizes by saying what you did wrong, why it is wrong and what is your plan to better yourself would be helpful. Don’t say anything about why you did it or any justification about it being ok. The apology is supposed to be 100% about the party hurt and you do your best to provide closure so they can move on. If that means they leave or walk away completely then that is what they need to do. It cannot be about purposely showing change. It has to be people noticing that on their own. It is all about time.

I'm not sure that we can really determine if they are sorry for their actions or only sorry they got caught. I'm certain some youtubers have apologized just because they "had" to in order to save face. But I also think people are capable of learning and growing. Is the only way to learn from something by making a widely well-received public apology? If the viewers' reactions to the person's apology is what determines if they are truly sorry, then is the apology really reflective of true remorse and growth? I'd argue it's possible to reflect and be truly sorry/do better without. I don't think we could determine that though. Ultimately only they will ever know I guess.

I agree with you also. & I correlate it to the LauraLee situation as well. I don’t think a person HAS to apologize to be sorry. I care more about their growth since. & I agree, most of the KZfaqrs that have successfully come back from their “cancelation” probably weren’t sorry when it happened or when they were forced to apologize but has since shown growth & actually done the work to be better.

I agree, I don’t think Kathleen is on the same level at all as to Shane, J* and others. I think that you should have said that in this video. I remember the hurricane and her apology. I don’t think the apology was great but I don’t know what anyone would do or how they would act if they were having to evacuate their home either. I felt she was and is a genuine person.

here’s my question id like to pose- what, if anything, could Kathleen have said on this topic to fix anything? Since four years ago when the video came out, she’s stayed unproblematic and overall has not repeated the same mistake. I AGREE that it’s wrong what she said but I think sometimes those of us who are calling people out do too much and play into the stereotype of cancel culture, not allowing someone to live down a video from YEARS ago even tho the behavior has not continued. Hot take but I respect your opinion if you disagree with me. Idk I guess I just feel the topic of this video was great but I don’t know if Kathleen is the right subject specifically

I agree. By continuing to bring someone down from something that happened years ago, we stop people wanting to grow as human beings. I don’t disagree that they should apologise to the people they may have affected by their actions or speech, but I think their actions since this time matter. So in the instance of Kathleen, she has been consistently promoting POC businesses and supporting the BLM movement. Whereas Jeffree Star’s actions are consistently poor to everyone around him and even people he personally DMs, e.g. telling a brand owner they hope they get shot in the face with a rubber bullet.

What people don't understand that a "good" apology doesn't fix something but a bad apology makes it worse. She had a bad apology where she never said "I'm sorry for being racist" she did what everyone else did and say "I'm sorry for what I said I did it for xyz reason but that was incorrect." I for one am over "I'm sorry for offending people or hurting your feelings" apologiea just say point blank you fucked up and apologize. Then once the first step is done keep doing work to fix the problem.

She did apologize when it happened,and right after a huge hurricane forced her to evacuate her house,she didn't had the time immediately to make a KZfaq video. That's why she's letting the apologies videos in a highlight this time(back then highlights didn't exist) all happened to fast,the scandal,the hurricane and the after math of the hurricane, yes sure weeks after she could address it but she didn't and i kinda understand. Also i do think she felt and feels bad about it.

She apologized with caveats. Which isn't an apology. She said she didn't say it with a hard R. She denied being racist in the initial "apology." it isn't just about saying the words "I'm sorry;" it's also about knowing what you did and giving yourself no excuses. If you say, "There's no excuse for what I did" and then mention that you were drunk as a cop-out, that's not genuine.

Honestly Hannah I have to disagree on some points here. Maybe I’m more cynical but I do think that in many cases the majority of people are rooting for youtubers to make bad apologies. We can only speak for ourselves but I think you have to be very optimistic to assume that people want to see growth and maturity. I think there is now this culture of enjoying the downfall of prominent people and love the show of someone going down

I really love Kathleen & feel like she is sincere. However, I even commented on a recent photo saying that although her apology can be appreciated, her not posting it on a main platform was severely disappointing and made it seem less genuine. I don’t think she did it to save her business, but I do believe that she is scared of the backlash she would (rightfully) get if she put it on a bigger platform. So even though I think she’s genuine, I don’t think it’s enough and I think it was a mistake to not put it on a more public platform. I hope she changes this mistake because I do love her & want to support her but also want her to really own what she did.

I personally think that she made the apology thru insta because it was the more personal platform thru her viewers. Coz whenever I see her IG stories she talks about more personal things than youtube. Atlhough youtube is a much bugger platform but she chose IG for that more personal touch. I sincerely think she's not the bad of a person, she continue to make videos regardless if there's lesser viewers.

KrislonR i know she got in a scandal with a youtuber called angelika oles because they were supposed to collaborate but then Angelika was called out because of racist slurrs, transphobic behavior and microagressions againsg BIPOC and Hannah defended her as a friend. After being called out and being included in another scandal (which is honestly really stupid and not even noteworthy), Hannah apologized for defending Angelika and cleared everything out. While Hannah did the right thing in her video, I just think its a bit hipocrytical since she has not mentioned the scandal or her mistakes. But what I think happened is that she posted a video and she tried to justify her saying that word by saying that she didn’t call anyone that word she just said it. Okay, so I went back and did some research and there are some videos on the topic. Rich Lux has one (I only mention this bc he includes her Instagram stories apology from 3 yrs ago). The debate in the videos is whether she meant the word in a malicious way or not.

She never did a video. She wrote an Instagram statement. It was something like, I'm not addressing the people who it's not their place to accept it, as most of Kathleen's fan base are latin and forgave her right away. And they came for Jaclyn with the snake emoji's. And I believe Jaclyn never heard her say it which was why she posted it. She specifically said, I was laughing like a hyena and didn't hear it. Which we all know Jaclyn does have a loud, obnoxious laugh. The situation ruined their planned collab which sucked bc we were all looking forward to it. Kathleen used the term like the black community uses it. I don't believe she meant any harm, although it's inappropriate from anyone including the black community. They need to stop using the word period.

it’s important to note that although kathleen didn’t address this on youtube, she did on instagram in a public post and on her highlights all those years ago. not saying it was a good apology or that we should all instantly forgive her, but you can’t say that she didn’t address it. also, kathleen is a very nervous and apologetic person on her channel, so i have a hard time believing that she wasn’t sorry at all. it’s harder that we’d like to think to admit to doing something so wrong, especially when you’re nervous to speak on the internet as it is. she’s changed a lot in the last few years (people who watch her can tell) and i’m tempted to believe that she has a really hard time thinking about what happened.

Regardless of whether it’s an influencer or your best friend, ‘sorry’ is just a word, your actions are what is important. It’s easy to lie with your words, but your actions will show your true intentions.

Yes! Thank you for talking about accountability. Apologizing doesn't mean you're being held accountable. To me, accountability isn't something you "take," you can take responsibility, but you can't take accountability. Accountability is a *willingness* to accept responsibility, it doesn't mean you *do* accept responsibility. To me, accountability is *outwardly*, responsibility is *inwardly*. And I'd argue that for KZfaqrs, celebrities, even your best friend, they don't get to decide when they've been held accountable because then, accountability becomes a checkbox, a destination, and not ongoing repentance and growth. The conversation around what really is accountability is something you should do a video on!!!

I used to love Kathleen and Jaclyn, the situation and how they both handled the situation, have contributed to why I do not consume either of their content. In thinking about the situation, I don’t think I could “forgive” any apology from an adult using racial slurs.

My problem with Jeffree is that he acts like he’s above the drama and that he’s actually changed. If he were to actually embrace the fact that he thrives off of drama and make a brand out of it, I’d respect it a little. Doesn’t make him a decent person by any means, but it’s better than being fake as hell in my opinion.

the topic of youtuber apologies is *so* interesting to me! last semester i finished a senior thesis in communication paper comparing shane dawson’s and jenna marbles’s apology videos, and it was really eye-opening to research the way that youtubers’ “brands” react during scandals. most of an “influencer’s” job is creating a brand out of themselves, but there has to be a level of sincerity that audiences can see. in most apologies, the youtuber is more swept up in saying what they should have done differently rather than proving that they’ll do it differently in the future. this video really hits the nail on its head!! 💛

definitely. people wanna be influencers, but they don't wanna actually influence anyone. james and tana are decent examples, where they live the influencer lifestyle of going to parties, but they should be using their influence to show their audiences that staying home and wearing masks and social distancing are the right things to do

To make it worse, not all the people in that “Let’s give Shane a hug” thread, were teens. Some were adults in their mid-twenties.

I actually don’t agree on the fact that Kathleen saying the n word was forgotten, it came up every single time she was mentioned on the BeautyGuruChatter subreddit. I mean yeah, reddit is not that big in the beauty community but still, the subreddit has 250.000 members and her views are definitely down from a couple of years ago. I’m not completely sure that it’s just because of that, her content feels dated and kinda boring sometimes, but I definitely think that that has contributed

So when I heard about the incident I wasn’t even watching Kathleen, but in my mind I said “oh I won’t watch her”. And now, years later, I would see her things pop up and I was like “huh Why don’t I watch her?.. i feel like she did something problematic... I’ll just stay away because I must have a reason for feeling this way” Kudos to past me for cementing that into my brain

I feel like it wasn't forgotten necessarily but definitely sidelined in support of her nail polish brand(s) before this came up again. Like I would see a lot of nail instagrammers or youtubers being able to use/mention her brand without kathleen's scandal or lackluster apology being discussed in the comments. Now that the conversation has come up again there is pushback against public support of her brand again (but again I don't follow the conversations on reddit as much as insta)

Truly enjoyed this video and 100% agree with your thoughts. A lot of the bigger ones (in my opinion) only apologize so they don’t lose everything from one bad decision they made. But what’s done in the dark comes to the light. So these are things they most likely have been doing for years and just got caught by someone on camera and had to say they were “sorry”.

@@TipTheScales27 yes, she was living in Mississippi at the time i think & said she wasn’t able to give an apology blah blah. Her apology was brief and dismissive. I wouldn’t even call it an apology

On the topic of not giving people credit for doing the bare minimum, maybe we should? I'm not just talking about high profile stuff, like maybe we should be taking more time to tell people about the good things they do. Friends, family, public figures, everyone really. Sometimes I wonder if people would be better people if they felt more appreciated when they do good things.

Your last point made me think of when celebrities used to say 'I am not a role model' all the time - that always infuriated me because YOU ARE A ROLE MODEL as an actor, artist, musician, etc., and now also influencers. I guess some just trying to say that they are not perfect and yes it's true: you are a human and as a fellow human being I know that none of us is perfect. However, if you choose a career where being a public persona is part of the job you cannot escape being expected to be held accountable and take responsibility for your words & actions.

I think you hit the nail on the head there with so many of these apologies being about damage control rather than genuine sorrow for the people these youtubers have hurt :( Also i think a discussion needs to be had about how general hate and trolling contributes to these creators messing up so badly when they get called out. I can imagine that if you constantly receive hate comments it could be easy (but not right) to perceive genuine criticism as just more hate, and therefore not handle it properly
