Finland and Sweden are Western European democracies, so why aren't they in NATO?
NATO has existed since the beginning of the Cold War and has expanded eastwards over the decades as more European nations have embraced democratic norms. But Sweden and Finland have been democracies since NATO's inception, so why has it taken them seventy years to apply to join the club? The answer lies in the two states' complicated relationships with today's Russia and the former Soviet Union, as well as in Finland and Sweden's longstanding desires to be neutral in world affairs at all costs.
