That is really impressive you can help a student make great improvements without face to face instruction. Mike improved immensely and I know he will only get better with more practice and your guidance. I remember struggling taking in person classes not getting the great instruction you provide, then getting better, then not welding much and going back not so great results. Watching you put down perfect aluminum beads is inspiring me to get back under the hood to practice.

I appreciate your message so much my friend. Keep at it, welding is so fun no matter how much you practice, or how much experience you have. Flip the hood down and enjoy the time buzzing away🙂 WELD ON!🔥

You should do a video on what causes suck back and how to prevent it on thin wall tubing. I work in the aerospace industry and even after 14 years I still struggle in certain areas. Lot of tube to plate (.035 to .049). Usually between 1” to 2” diameter. Def would be helpful.

Mike, what a great job you did!! With good instruction from someone who knows what is wrong with a weld and can show you why it came out that way, is far better than an instructor who say "keep practicing". I learned how to weld from the head welding instructor at the local Navy yard for submarine welding and have been welding for over 50 years. YOU, Mike are going to be a great welder.... soon. Good luck with your fun future. Even I learned a lot from this video. Good instruction and explanations. The old welder says... "There are only three things I can't weld, the crack of dawn, the crack of your ass, and a broken heart."

Interesting the weld samples seems like reading another language. And it seems you are very proficient at it Dusty.

Most of my tig welds are shiny but when I tig weld a t joint on the aluminum tanks I build we have to tig a t joint on the lift lugs and my lift lug t joint welds are never shiny but I see some guys t joint welds shiny idk if they let it cool down between each pass

Try messing with your freq and balance, I do 120 for freq and 70 for balance and they are shiny, and yea have your arc length super tight. And always wipe with acetone after you tack up right before your going to weld (obviously after you wipe before you brush too and shit).
@nathanarmendariz48
@nathanarmendariz48 7 ай бұрын
@@Xotc_ yeah I typically run 120-144 for frequency and anywhere between 65-70 for balance and I usually acetone the shit out of the material before welding it even on stainless my job is pretty much out of aluminum tanks for the most part there’s really only two guys building aluminum tanks right now the rest on stainless the stainless tanks are cake walk I got my settings dialed in on that but that’s mostly mig I typically run 34 arc length and 30 arc control and 312 ipm on the stainless mig welder with 0.35 wire then if I have to tig stainless I’m typically running 180 amps with balance at 70 and frequency at 120-144

"standoff distance" is a silly term. You're the only person I've heard in my entire life call it that. The proper term is "arc length". It's the proper way to describe it because it's _exactly_ what it is. It's the length of the arc. "standoff distance" is meaningless.
