Another great video! Thanks Mell. Could you possibly do something on greying curly hair....the science behind why it changes so much when greys start to take over the natural colour? I know you are young and don't have to worry about this right now, but it's something that is lacking in your menu of videos and I know you have fans who got the greys too! Love your style!😊

The unsung hero of my curly routine has always been non-aerosol hairspray (aka, spritz.) These provide a stronger hold and really lock your style in place. Pantene’s version is affordable and very effective. For me, it’s curl cream, gel, and hairspray to finish. My wash days usually last a whole week this way.

And here we go for another hair product I mean how many other product do we still need to finally achieve "the perfect hair goal"??? The last year it was the Denman brush now it is the wet brush Bonnets pillow cases An infinity long list of shampoos scalp exfoliants conditioners masks Serums creams olaplex k18 heat protectants leaving conditioners Gels Gel cream Brushes Combes Scalp brushes Microfiber towels Even steamers And some how we still find more products to fill the list with Can we just have some rest and let our hair be the way it want to be? Have we ever asked ourselves if our ancestors who used to wear their curls proudly used all this products? I don't think so! Your hair doesn't need all this

I totally agree with you! I love Mel and I wholeheartedly Trust her when it pertains to hair tips. But I tried everything that I’ve seen from her videos and other Influencers. But what works for me & gives me perfect curls is Mousse & Hairspray! That’s it, That’s all. And my curly hair looks perfect with just those two products and lasts for days, sometimes a full week. I also notice when I moisturize my hair before styling l, it makes it frizzy smh… so I converted back to the same Regimen that I used my whole entire life. We truly do Not need all of these products, we just need to find the products that work best for us

You have the choice to NOT be influenced by these influencers/youtubers. They create videos on this topic so that we are aware of the products and get some reviews, in no way they're trying to force us to use any product. I just stick to affordable daily shampoo, clarifying shampoo, conditioner, mask, leave in creams and gels. That's all. Once in a while I try new brands because I get bored of using same old stuff. It's your choice after all how you choose to do your hair. My friend has curly hair and isnt into CG much. She just conditions her curls and let them be just like that. What you want to do with your hair is your decision. And it's influencers job to keep talking about new products, brands, techniques and trends but who said it was mandatory to follow it all?

I love hairspray. It gives me more volume and some protection from frizz. And keeps it in place. I was a teenager in the 80s and had big hair and used a can a week. Though I didn't use the best hairspray back then but there weren't many choices. 85 cents for extra super hold aqua net. But once in a while, my mom would buy me sebastians' shaper hairspray from the hair salon. Aqua net would leave build up on my hair. Now I use much better hairspray. Ha ha

Hi, love your videos. I'm a fellow hairdresser myself and I have similar hair to yours and your sisters, I just want to answer myself and say I personally hate hairspray even when my hair is styled straight. I always feel like i have to rewash my hair,(when i used to get it done and they would spray it). So i wouldn't think to use it in my curly routine. I like my curls soft and bouncy actually and my texture it just doesn't like hairspray lol but I like how you explain it and everyone's curls are different to. I would love to see other people using it to see the style and hold it gives others.

this is what i needed! i have fine 3A low density, high porosity short hair and on my washdays, my hair is so soft even a droplet of finishing oil will make me look like a marinaded salmon 😂 so i indeed used hairsprays a few washdays in a row to finish my prepoed, washed, conditoned, styled and diffused hair. In the beginning it was a gamechanger, got me tons of volume and grip but after a few weeks that benefits turned to greasy, lifeless looking curls... stopped hairspray turned back to oil to finish. what i figured, was to commit to deepconditioning weekly (which i notoriously skipped). That really helped me encourage my more big and loose curl pattern to be moist and nourished, but within the second, third and so on washday they get the grip and volume naturally from sebum and oil from the head! But im keen to use and try hairspray in different variants again! THX Mell ❤❤❤

OMG! Back in the day, hairspray was all we had for hold, well, that and Dippity-Do. My hair falls into my eyes, ALL THE TIME! I've been using a clip to hold it back, but I'm always afraid it will screw up my curls where it's clipped. So, I've started using hairspray to hold it back. It works for a about a day and if I spray it well enough, I can get it to last for the next day, as well, after I take my bonnet off in the morning. One of the tricks we use to do for making sure the hairspray dried before it weighed the hair down or messed up our style, was to take a hair dryer on low setting and cool setting if your hair dryer has it, and just carefully wave over the hair where it is sprayed. It takes like 2 seconds, and VIOLA, dry hairspray and hold! I still do this, just in case. LOL!

I have only recently started to play with stylers to embrace my waves. Nobody in my family had wavy or curly hair so all stylers and how to style were foreign to me. Hair dressers were no help who would style me straight years ago. So I just went product free for years. It's only since I discovered the curly girl method and saw styling videos on KZfaq. And I grew up in the 90s when gel was supposed to leave your hair crunchy, and hairspray was so your hair won't move at all. I feel like embracing my waves has me embracing my waves and taking an entirely new mindset regarding stylers that I always felt were bad for my hair due to buildup.

I have 2b, 3a hair and I never scrunch out the crunch on wash day. I do always do a light spray of Kenra volume spray 25 on it that way. I work outside all night and then sleep on it the next day. When I wake up I scrunch it out the crunch and it looks better than wash day hair. My hair still moves with this hair spray and helps it hold the curl pattern. I can easily get 4 days out of a wash, but typically wash every 3 days.

CS has a spray gel, IIRC, which you apply at the same point in your routine at which you'd apply a liquid gel. It's still a gel, just easier to apply and manage than liquid gels, which you have to squeeze/scoop into your hand and manually spread it over your hair. Not sure if you were referring to that product or a true hairspray.

@@tigershark_524 CS had it as "Flawless Finish Hairspray" in flexible or strong hold in an aerosal can so it is a hairspray. I haven't seen a single thing on the curlsmith website about a spray gel though. Maybe you're talking about another brand potentially?

Thanks for another great video. So do you spray the finishing hairspray on before you scrunch out the crunch (I use gel) or after (once you have fluffed ur curls?)

The Eva NYC hairspray gave my husband a massive migraine from the smell, it went straight into the trash. I would love to use their products but the smell is not going to work for me. That said,I love hairspray. 😁

What do you think about root spray touch ups? I use loreal root touch up spray in between my hair dye appointments. Are they bad for your hair? I'm concerned because I' ve just had surgery and my hair is falling out excessively, but I was warned it would and I'm doing everything I can to help it go through this temporary process, but dont want to do anything to make it worse.

Mell let me ask it this way, if there was a tier list for types of curly products. S tier being the best A being 2nd best, B, C, D and E following. What teir would hairspray be on? And yes I just watched TierZoo's newest video😅

I've had good results with Ouidad Going Up texture finishing spray. Of course they discontinued it, so what are some recommended texture sprays for fine 3b/c high porosity hair in a desert/high frizz climate?

If I put leave in conditioner plus oil on my fine 2c waves, my hair would look like I'd been caught in the rain as it falls down the sides of my head, lol.

If I 2c waves too. My hair loves leave-in and oil. The issue is not to use too much when it comes to oil. Two tiny drops is enough. When I first read about oil, I put way too much and ended up looking like I had not showered in 2 weeks. Ha ha. But because I didn't know how sparingly we need to use it.

I’m never going to buy another Eva NYC after seeing how terrible their packaging is. The 10-1 spray and the two shampoos I have all don’t dispense, open, or close properly. See the Ulta comments on the 10-1 lol

Hi! I’m certainly not Mell but the hairspray I’ve loved for years is the Aussie Mega hairspray. It has a good hold but isn’t sticky at all. Like most Aussie products I’ve used, it smells so good too! It’s inexpensive and I use so little that a bottle will last me about a year. I usually get it at Walmart. I don’t know what Mell would say about it but I love it!

Hi Mel, I need HELP. My 11 year old has 2c/3a low porosity hair, and I have tried everything to keep it from looking dry and frizzy, but nothing has worked. Recently, she said she wished she didn't have curly hair, and that breaks my heart. I want her to love her curls like I love mine. PLEASE give me some advice. Thank you

Sorry she isn't liking her curls. That is tough. Have you gone to a stylist that specializes? If you can, that may be a good step. I would also emphasize that the hair you see on YT is not... realistic. Its in front on cameras, usually right after a wash & style. Lighting makes a huge difference too. Look at some of their pre-wash or day 3. People (myself included) get caught up in an 'anti-frizz' that is not realistic... and was pretty damaging for me. I don't decide how I am going to treat someone based on some frizz, and so I need to not judge myself... and realise noone else is judging me (which would be super hard at 11) I have low porosity hair (very fine, low density, caucasian) & I have really been liking the LUS All in One (wavy would be my rec). It is a leave-in with the hold products of a mousse. I use a bit of a different gel with it, but that is my foundation. The porosity of the hair and how thick the strand is are the two main things to consider when buying products... rather than curl type. You need to look for care for low porosity hair that has enough hold for her curls. eVOLVH Wonderbalm ($$$ but it lasts a long time) is a silicone alternative. I also LOVE their deep conditioner (pricy, has protein thats small & safe for low po, and you don't need a separate mask asker, curl junky Repair Me is good, but heavier). Mel is all things knowledgeable, but I would find a few products for her porosity & texture/fine, coarse (watch mels vids on porosity)... Then look to some folks that have a similar curl pattern for styling... I think WavyGalla, GinaMarie, Holistic Enchilada (she has low density fine hair)...

Brush through leave in on soaking wet hair & add a bit of curl cream (not too much), that can be brushed through as well & just scrunch up (mico plop), either let it air dry or diffuse. My granddaughter has super long 3a spirals, all one length down to her lower back. My daughter only uses those 2 products on her hair. A spray bottle with a little bit of either product above on refresh days using praying hands & her curls spring right back up. She has an array of products since they both have curly hair but ik she likes Curls Blueberry Bliss, KKNT, Maui Moisture, also Cantu & Shea moisture kids products, ik the last 2 aren't always recommend but they work for her. Just remember less is usually more. I wish I could post a pic Ugh I rave over my granddaughter's curls every time I see her, I always say I trade curls as hers are so beautiful. Show her videos or get her a kid's book on curly hair. Tell her how so many wish they had curls but got stuck with straight hair, just a lot of reassurance. Sorry so long, Best of luck 🥰

I agree with the top two comments, leave in conditioner and maybe a gel or mousse. Brush style. Scrunch with tshirt & plop or diffuse. I have low porosity 3a/3b curls and my hair is fine with medium density

You need good products. Look at ingredients. Look for Shea butter, oils… I use Alaffia from Whole Foods (better than Shea moisture who changed their ingredients), kinky curly leave in conditioner, and Biolage Gelee styler ( not sticky at all). Put on wet hair, brush out in sections. And scrunch excess moisture out with a cotton tshirt. Other good moisturizing hair brands: Camille rose, Mielle, Curlsmith.. Check what the ingredients are in what she currently uses. My hair HATES aloe Vera, and it dries it out and is too much protein-yes, aloe is protein. Protein Heavy avoid. Hydrolzed silk, anything like that. Low porosity doesn’t need much

You are a great mom! I went through the "hating my curls phase" for a few years when I was younger. Nobody in my family taught me to lean into the curls. The message was always find a way to straighten your hair. You are doing the right thing by teaching her to love herself and her hair.
