And what should exactly Georgia do in the current situation (honestly asking)? We have an upcoming election and any involvement in the conflict will be seen (from the point of community) as current parliaments tries to uphold power, not that we are giving the real interest the situation. Also the prime minister, as well as president, offered for a peace dialogue to be upheld in Tbilisi, but surely it did not resonate in either party of a conflict. Subjectively speaking we all know who is the real "friend" of Georgia in the region and who should be punished, but no party will justify current involvement.

The reason for Israel's cozy relationship with Azerbaijan is - for me - a complete mystery. It seems to me that they would be sympathetic to a Christian country with a long history of being murdered and bullied by Muslims. On the other hand, the Iranian disposition is a lot easier to understand. Azerbaijan has a nationalist and irredentist streak and many Azeri want to unite all Azeri in a single nation. That means Iran. Secondly, Azerbaijan is relatively prosperous and Western, whereas Iran is an authoritarian hell hole of misery. Thus, many Azeris in Iran look at the prospect of uniting with Azerbaijan favorably. So Iran supports Armenia as a counterweight to Azerbaijani ambitions and progress.

I really want azerbaijan and armenia finally to reconcile. Just stay in your internationally recognized borders and do not let other superpowers put their fingers into Caucasus. ESPECIALLY RUSSIA! you only include Russia? Turkey is also a player in the region. Turkey and Azerbaijan are both Turkic and Islamic countries. they also speak almost the same language. Azeri language is basically Turkish with an accent. and of course Armenians were victims of a genocide under the Ottoman Empire, something that Turkey doesn't recognize. Turkey also discriminates against its Kurdish minority population and of course there was a failed coup d'etat attempt in 2016. many journalists, political opponents, generals, teachers and students were arrested. Turkey is no longer a democratic and secualar country. Sultan Erdogan is an Islamist Fascist with a fetish for the Ottoman Empire. Turkey even want to start a war with Greece, wants to remove Assad from power in Syria so Erdogan can install a puppet in his place.

Best case scenario for the Caucasus is for Turkey to loose a lot of territory to establish eastern Kurdistan, which would then be a peaceful nation boundary between Turkey and where Armenia reaches the black sea. With those gains Armenia returns lands to Azerbaijan and withdraws troops with Kurdistan and Georgia providing peacekeeping forces paid for by Russia, Turkey and UN. Georgia and Kurdistan providing stability instead of an old empire will ensure both of their likelihood to cooperate. For reparations to Azerbaijan they are allowed free access to the black sea for X number of years through Armenian territory. To ensure Russia doesn't continue meddling they have to withdraw from the area allowing Chechnya the autonomy they've been wanting. If it works as well as it does in my head then those 4.5 States could develop strong ties and economic stability and growth that would act as a secure buffer and safe haven.

I think he was actually extremely biased in the way he presented the information. It's interesting that he forgot to mention the 300,000 - 500,000 Armenian refugees from the original conflict while he inflated the numbers of Azeri refugees (maybe he had to do this because of the political situation in Azerbaijan but Idk), when he said that the southern regions of Artsakh had 5 times the population of the northern regions that is just a lie (the south had a little over double the population so why the need to stretch numbers? Unless your trying to justify something really bad that you're planning on doing to the Armenians), also that he only mentions things like ethnic cleansing when talking about or showing screenshots of Armenian war crimes but he never mentions the Azeri ones, add in that little passive aggressive threat at the end that basically says 'if you refuse to be minorities under Azerbaijan then the time for peaceful solution might pass very soon' without him stating what a non-peaceful solution would obviously be.

He high lights Armenian tactics incorporate the regions into Armenia but not Azerbaijans effort to remove Aremnian culture form it's regions or public statements about violence towards Aremenians. @@rogerwilco2 It's not Turkey who is in this fight. I dont get why media is trying to blame everything on Erdogan for all causes in its region. Same goes for Syrian Civil War, which is a threat for Turkey's southern regions, and same goes for East Med, where there is an ambitious plan to isolate Turkey out of its natural resources. Both issues which are critical for our nation's survival & future generations' prospects. For us Turks Qarabag is the matter of our brother nation Azerbaijan. Before Armenia's new president surprisingly did advocate the old nationalistic rhetoric of expansionism (celebrating anniversary of Sevres declaration & eyeing Turkish lands to establish "Great Armenia") & enforcing the usurpation of Qarabag's adjecent 7 regions with yet another highway in the making, there was actually hope in Ankara & Baku that Pashinyan could be changing the game which would mean more cooperation, but as it was seen in his works & statements, he was eager to worsen the situation. Aliyev called out on his bluff & Erdogan saw this opportunity to give Pashinyan a fair share of reality check. In the end we hope Azerbaijan gains his lands back & certain degree of autonomy can be granted to the Armenians who still want to live in Azerbaijan. And peace.

Well, not exactly the majority in Nagorno-Karabakh region in particular, but still with great historical and cultural ties to the region - and an absolute majority in the neighbouring formerly occupied regions. That's a key factor not to be omitted. Even though the region's borders were drawn in a way to include all Armenian-populated settlements, there were still big Azerbaijani settlements and cultural cradles inside it like the cities of Shusha and Khojaly. During the war a total of more than one million ethnic azerbaijanies were either brutally killed, kidnapped, tortured or forced into refuge both from Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts by militarized armenian nationalists. The ties of the refugees to the region were attempted to be erased furtherly, by vandalising and destruction of azerbaijani religious and cultural heritage in the region, resettlement of ethnic armenians to the region and rasing of the remaining azerbaijani settlements to the ground. Thus, we got what we got - an enclave controlled by ethnic armenians within Azerbaijan based on the rights of ethnic cleansing and conquest.

Actually, the war is ended now. In a good point, Azerbaijan liberated significant amount of their lands in those territories till 10 October, it is considerable as a victory of Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, Armenia lost their regulation over these lands beside thousands of soldiers and a lot of militiary equipments. On 10 October , Putin, president of Russia talked to both presidents of the countries and made a peace agreement with such conditions that Armenia forces should leave unliberated lands till certain dates and armenians who were living outside of Nagorno Karabakh should leave these lands. However, armenians still will continue to their lives in Nagorno Karabakh same as before. There are some uncertain questions, but I think it will be solved in following negotiations.

@Artr Thormodr It became that way after 80% of Abkhazians were deported from their homeland by Russians. The whole Caucasus colonized by Russia with the help of Georgians who granted navel Base for Russians which became instrumental for the region being invaded. Most of the Georgians in Abkhazia were brought in during (Beloved Georgian butcher) the Stalin period. I would say 80% of the Migrelians were settled during this period for the purpose of taking over Abkhazia. It was Stalin who reduced Abkhazia's status from the independent Socialist Republic to the Autonomous Republic of Georgia. There is also an issue between Georgia and Armenians about the status of Javakheti was ethnic Armenian majority. If Armenia was not landlocked and can not afford to lose Georgian connection. This would be another trouble spot.

Secondly, I don't know how you conceive of Azerbaijan in your mind but it is not what you think. Unlike Armenia It's not a religious country at all, it is the most secular one, multireligious and multinational country in the Caucasus. Think you could've include the de facto population exchanges in the 1980s when talking about Karabakh, there were pogroms in Azerbaijan so while the exodus of the Karabakh Azeris are true it's just a part of the greater picture that occurs in the wake of USSR collapse. And there are more that could be covered about Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan policies and geopolitical goals and reasons why Azerbaijan restarted conflict, you probably know that but might get into trouble talking about that. I'd say this is obviously still slightly biased, but it's overall very objective, and probably the most objective reporting of the situation coming from an Azeri. I can give rats ass about a journalist eating up a few punches in a prison, and getting lets go after 30 days, than live all my life with the pain of 613 civilians having gotten nassacred and mutilated in #Khojali. Corruption and oppression in Azerbaijan is at extremely high level. It does not affect ordinary citizens. Aliyev problem is our problem, and it only affect us. Aliyev problem is not external. Opposition's main duke with him was his imability to do anything with Karabakh. People wanted war. People wanted memory and sacrifice of 20'000 heroes that were killed because of mythical "Great Armenia" ambitions of fascist "supreme race" of followers of Nazi collaborator, armenian national hero Garegin Nzdeh. Aliyev is our problem, and we will deal with that problem by appropriate means, at appropriate time. Now, we are united. More united than any nation can be at such moment. We are dealing with an adversary that has a collective psychological issues bordering with Nazi ideologies of supremacy of their own group, and fascism against civilians. When we finish with them, there will be time for internal deliberations. Those in the West pointing to the lack ofndevelopment of civil liberties or democratic institution at this moment pursue either of two agendas: 1) Aliyev is a dictator, and thus this war is imposed by him on his people. Thats bull shit, for the reason I described above. 2) Aliyev is a dictator, and thus how can Armenians in Karabakh agree to be ruled by him. Legitimate arguement, that I think will be a good pressure on the ruling party to be more liberal and open in the future. But in no way is inclusion of Armenian of Karabakh under Azerbaijani rule is a "downgrade" to the condition they live now under the illegal junta regime in terms of living standards or civil liberties. To copy my comment from a thread somewhere else: an analysis from a Western European, so a relatively neutral outsider: Both the war, with the past the way it has been for a long time; as well as the current move by the Armenian government were unavoidable. Although the surrendering was controversial, it is probably understandable. Here’s why: If Armenia didn’t surrender, the Azeri’s would’ve taken all of Nagorno-Karabach and maybe even invaded Armenia. It’s just that this would have not benefitted Russia, so Russia put a halt to it. Azerbaijan isn’t satisfied yet, even now..... (dictatorship vs. Armenian democracy (although to be fair Armenia’s democracy is also pretty corrupt and unstable)) Why this happened? Simple. Azerbaijan has become MUCH more powerful than Armenia these last decades. How? Money from OIL. The good old “black gold” has caused a war yet again.... it’s the Gulf Wars, Yemen, and even Africa all over again...... Fossil fuel capital on a worldwide scale unfortunately is like a lottery most of the time: some countries get all, some get nothing. The only silver lining is that with rapid transitions to renewable energy, the value of heavily physical location based fossil fuels like oil, will steadily decrease in the future. So countries becoming rich of lucky findings in their soil will eventually become a thing of the past. Not yet though. Climate change will create new conflict areas near and in the polar regions (for example due to the melting of permafrost)

Why not both? Self-determination without violating territorial sovereignty, the former doesn't necessarily imply secession. This messy conflict (inflated by toxic nationalisms from both sides) should and can be solved by guaranteeing the long-aspired self-determination to the NK Armenians within the Azerbaijani borders, the rest are technical issues.

Shirvan clearly stated that an autonomous Regime in Nagorno Karabakh under Azerbaijan is the best solution. Wide autonomy for Nagorno-Karabah within Azeri borders and with international supervision is probably the best option for Armenians long term. Hey Shirvan, I'm an Armenian who has been following the videos on your channel for a while and i find them really interesting. But i found this video a little biased, though not to a big extent. 1) What we need to mention here is that the fight was started by the Azerbaijani forces(because they need to reclaim the territory) 2) During the war in the 90's Armenians took the adjacent parts of Azerbaijan because there was no other option, as it needed to be directly connected to Armenia. 3)Azerbaijan has been getting massive support from Turkey during this war. May it be new equipment, or hired jihadists from Syria and other countries(which Azerbaijan denies ofc). 4)Azerbaijan has been shelling civilian populated regions in Karabagh(there are videos of them using cluster bombs, an internationally banned ammunition because of it destructive power to civilians), though i cannot argue that Armenia hasn't done the same as revenge. Overall I get that you are from Azerbaijan and that the video may be a little biased, I would do the same too unconsciously If I were to make a video on the confilict. Anyways, stay safe out there, I hope this all will be finished soon with peace.

Thanks. Very interesting video. I work on secession and conflict. There is in fact a way to address the seeming contradiction in the positions. An agreement could be reached that formally brings Nagorno-Karabakh under Azerbaijan’s sovereignty, but with autonomy. But the territory would also be offered a referendum on its future in 5-10 years. This would satisfy Azerbaijan’s honour and give Baku time to win over NK to stay in Azerbaijan. With autonomy and oil money, I could see people making a decision to take continued self rule in Azerbaijan. It may seem far fetched, but it draws on several other conflicts where these approaches have been used. The question is whether Azerbaijan would be willing to accept this, especially as it seems that Baku may now see the chance to resolve the issue once and for all by military means. (Although it may not solve it as ‘cleanly’ as it thinks as Azerbaijan is a member of the Council of Europe and so could be taken to the European Court of Human Rights if it unlawfully deprived people of their property.) Anyway, just some thoughts.

That's Madrid principles. Except the scheduled referendum. Azerbaijan gets 5 regions to the east of NK, some IDPs return, then Azerbaijan gets the remaining 2 regions that are to the west of NK. And the status of NK is left to decide in the future. Azerbaijan was trying for this resolution since most of our IDPs are from the 7 regions outside the NK. One of our problems would be solved. And yet armenia kept arming and fortifying their armed positions in and especially outside NK, in those 7 regions. OSCE Minsk group was tasked with resolving this conflict, but alas you can see how long it took them to achieve literally nothing.

That's an interesting proposal. But I think Armenia would be skeptical about Azerbaijan following their end of the bargain. I mean, Azerbaijan could just delay the implementation of the referendum for whatever reason (especially if polls would suggest an Armenian win) until they felt the demographics had shifted in their favor enough to give them an assured win. The only way a referendum could work would be for the region to be put under UN protection first to assure the results would be legitimate and such a decision would be held despite possible opposition of the losing party. Also, in that hypothetical scenario, would the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh be given Azeri citizenship, or even required to do so, before the referendum takes place?

If Armenia didn’t surrender, the Azeri’s would’ve taken all of Nagorno-Karabach and maybe even invaded Armenia. It’s just that this would have not benefitted Russia, so Russia put a halt to it. Azerbaijan isn’t satisfied yet..... (dictatorship vs. Armenian democracy (although to be fair Armenia’s democracy is also pretty corrupt)) Why this happened? Simple. Azerbaijan has become MUCH more powerful than Armenia these last decades. How? Money from OIL. The good old “black gold” has caused a war yet again.... it’s the Gulf Wars, Yemen, and even Africa all over again...... Fossil fuel capital on a worldwide scale unfortunately is like a lottery most of the time.

Russia could not allow Chechnya to separate (though it absolutely should have), but what old dudes in their Ivory Towers decide is not the measurement of what we, humans here in this thread, should consider as valuable. Borders have been invented (~4Kish years ago) and there will be a time when they will be phased out. This video is biased and misses a lot of key information. Please answer, why are there 370+ Armenian churches in Nagorno-Karabakh dating back to 4th Century? Why is there a region deep inside Nagorno-Karabakh called Tigranakert? Did you know Tigranes the Great was the Armenian king in 80BC? Also did you know that the Armenian language was created by St. Mesrop Mashdots and built the Amaras Monastery in early 5th Century in the region? St Gregory the Illuminator's grave is also in Artsakh. Nagorno-Karabakh was Armenian territory to begin with. Was handed over to a newly created state called "Azerbaijan" by Joseph Stalin in 1923. Armenians are the indigenous people of Nagorno Karabakh, aka Artsakh. For those that don't understand, this is the situation of Artsakh. Kid 1 (Armenia) Kid 2 (Azerbaijan) Kid 1 has candy. Joseph Staling comes in takes Candy from Kid 1 and gives to Kid 2. Kid 1 & Kid 2 fight and Kid 1 successfully gets his candy back. But because Kid 2 had the candy for some time, he thinks it's his. But it wasn't his to begin with.

So there are no only churches in Karabakh, ancient churches are in Gadabay, Dashkasen, Sheki, Zaqatala, Qakh, Qabala and all over Azerbaijan which goes back to begining of century. Yet that didn’t stop the Russians, Chinese, and white settlers in America to take over those lands from the natives and claim it as their own, despite natives originally owning it. No matter what, when someone tells the truth about the conflict, people think that it must be biased because it is so obvious who is right and who is wrong from the legal perspective. Attempts to describe this conflict in a "more balanced" way have always led to Armenia gaining from such coverage, i.e. the wrong party being unjustly rewarded for being wrong.

It seems contradictory but it's true. The root cause was the border line gerrymandering done by USSR to suit Russian needs not the needs either of the two countries. Any nationalist movement during the Soviet era was out of question with KGB present everywhere. So people were friends. After it's collapse the pot exploded and people thus became enemies. Similar case was the disintegration of Yugoslavia.

So, let's point some issues with your stance. The trust constructed by... pogroms 😏. The tensions were there, but nobody wanted to upset papa Stalin. Shirvan, it wasn't Armenia making claims, both made claims after the collapse of the Russian Empire. The USSR froze the conflict and gave Azerbaijan administration rights over Artsakh. During the collapse of the sovereign owner, Artsakh declared independence from USSR, then, of course, Azerbaijan laid claims and Armenia supported the Artsakh in a hope for a union. Then you say the negotiations went bad because of Armenians, while it is clear Azerbaijan don't want to negotiate. Armenians were ready to give back the Azeri part of Artsakh for independence and a land link with Armenia. But Azerbaijan wants more from negociations than they managed to gain from 3 wars, meaning all. 2 But to conclude on the situation. It's clear Azerbaijan lost big time regardless of the outcome of the war. I mean at most they gain some mountains with a hostile population if they are not planning a genocide. Their expenses could have been used for other projects and their country will be stuck for ever in this game between Turkey, Russia, Iran and Israel.

It is a reenactment of the Madrid principles. Armenia has to retreat from non-NK territories, Lachin corridor will be under Russian peacekeeping supervision for 5 years (with the possibility of extending it if both sides want it) while the status of the former Nagorno-Karabakh autonomous region will be resolved in the following years. Negotiations will ensue. Will it work this time? Don't know. Unlike previous attempts, Armenia is now in a bad position. Azerbaijan can now claim that if a decision is not made, they have the military option to resolve the conflict. They are now perfectly capable to take all the territory. Another variable is external interference. Russia does not have the time nor the resources to invest in maintaining peace and stability in the region while Turkey needs a scapegoat to distract its people from the poor state of their economy. We have a long way to go.
