Exactly 100 years ago Saturday, the U.S. government passed a groundbreaking law to protect migratory birds that fly across the Atlantic. To mark the anniversary, National Geographic Magazine helped declare 2018 "The Year of the Bird." It kicked off the observance with an essay from acclaimed author Jonathan Franzen, who's also a bird lover and a conservationist. Alex Wagner reports.

I feed the birds outside my window and watch them compete for seed. There's Bluejays, Cardinals, Brown doves and Boat tailed grackle. The rabbits and squirrels come along and I whistle a happy tune.

I support 7 wild animal environmental organisations including the RSPB--the Royal Society for the protection of Birds--then Amnesty and Labour. In my 82 years I've seen 95% of the small birds destroyed 97% of insects at least 80% of all creatures and wild places. Anyone not scared shitless now is not paying the least attention. Also on climate boiling.
