While everyone knows about the fearsome reputation of the Roman legionaries, it's sometimes forgotten that the provincial auxiliaries did much of the fighting for the Roman army. From Syrian archers to Sarmatian cavalry, these skilled warriors made up around half of Rome's military forces.

Great video at dispelling misconceptions. The auxillaries (especially the ones that served as heavy infantry) and the legions also often wore the same armor. There are segmented armor pieces found in the ruins of auxillary forts, and the Dacian War monument in Romania, the Tropaeum Traiani, depicts both auxillaries and legionaires as wearing chainmail and scale (little to nobody is depicted as wearing segmented armor).

I heard that when auxiliary personel has done his 25years of service he will be granted Roman citizenship and piece of land. But is there any Roman citizen who serve in the auxiliary for his skill?

In Civilisation 6 there’s an achievement for clearing nuclear contamination with a Roman Legion unit.

Auxiliaries were not on par in a fight with a legionary. Their entire purpose is to save roman blood simply because they were outnumbered by a lot. This is described by agricola who campaigned in britain. Without any allies, rome wouldn't last simply from overwhelming numbers not because auxiliaries were good fighters.

The auxiliaries were retired legionarie soldiers. They did their time in the main force. Theyre usually back up forces that are well trained when the main force was faultering. You didnt want to fight auxiliaries. They were a bunch of old angry vets that knew how to kill

Its funny you said, "the last thing you want is to be policing your own tribe". It makes sense but modern solutions for police violence often claim the opposite. 2 very diffrent situations. Empire vs Democracy

All the stuff that you see, the ancient cities of europe for the most were build by the legionaries. Be a legionar means that not only you know how to destruct, but mostly to raise up cities. The legion's bases after be used by the legions and being abandoned because the moving of the war after became the cities, and the layout of the cities for the most it was the same layout of the barracks. Romans were builders....and the brits know it. We left them the best of our culture. The terms, the aqueducts and the civilization like in the other europe. Civilization. The modernity. Bridges, roads, instituctions, city halls, baths. All cities fornthe most were made by romans legionaries. If u destroy than rebuild BETTER. In this case, we destroyed hauses made by wood and give them stones/bricks.

It's interesting that only the Britons now enliven the Roman empire's history.

Funny to see a British dude dressed as a Roman legionnaire considering the Roman's opinion of ancient British was about as low as it gets.

If NATO were go to war hypothetically in the future it would be cool if we saw like specialisation of countries like the mountain units would be Italian Alpini and the navy is British etc (in theory i think it would be cool)
