Why is Avatar Frontiers of Pandora first person? We spoke to the developers of the upcoming action-adventure game to find out why they chose first-person instead of third-person perspective.
While many players were hoping for a third-person Avatar game, hopefully this video explains why Massive Entertainment opted for a different route. And, having played two hours of it for our recent preview, I genuinely think the perspective works to properly anchor you into the strange, beautiful world of Pandora.

Never understood the argument that First person = more immersion, there are plenty of third person games that feel amazing and just as immersive as any firtst person. Being able to see your character's model/armor and clothing, and watching them interact with the npc's and environments is way more immersive imo.

This isn't even made by the guys who made far cry. It's because they thought it would be more immersive like they just said. The setting alone and the fact you can ride an Ikran will make it way different than far cry. It's just similar because it's an open world first person shooter by Ubisoft not much else.

It doesn't matter if its 3rd or 1st person. All that matters is how the devs make it work. Look at RDR2 which is primarily in 3rd person or cyberpunk 2077 which is in 1st person. Arguably 2 of the most immersive games in recent years

Dont really understand where people get the idea that FPS games promote immersion. Not for me it doesn't i hate FPS games and much prefer 3rd person. Nope, for Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED created a brand new engine instead of reusing the one from The Witcher 3. Since it's conception, Cyberpunk's game engine had first person in mind and that idea was supported by Mike Pondsmith (the creator of Cyberpunk 2020, which serves as a base for 2077)

The issue people are having with it being a first person game is you give the player the option to customize your character and they msy want to look at their customized character. When the developers offered example of Bioshock games, those already have a non-customized character that has been predetermined.

‘AVP’ & ‘Predator: Concrete Jungle’ both offered 2 different POV. Typically, gamers associate open world with 3rd person e.g. GTA. Now imagine that game solely as 1st person… Happy to hear everyone’s thoughts..

This game should have been horizon forbidden west but avatar. Forbidden west has the perfect formula for an avatar game. Guerilla games should have been given this project not ubisoft.

Game developers need to stop shoving their ideas down our throats. Cyberpunk did the same thing and now they are doing it. These games with vast open vistas with numerous varied locations NEED to have a 3rd person option and it's coming from a person who mostly plays FPS games. Open world games deserve at least an optional 3rd person mode and there shouldn't be any exception.

They are making the same colossal mistake that Cyberpunk 2077 made. Game developers should've learned by now from the Grand Theft Auto series and Hogwarts Legacy that third person open world games with character creation and customization are the most popular games.

First person is always the easy way out. Takes a huge chunk out of the production process, eliminating hundreds of hours of AAA mo-cap, detailing the main character's pixel-dense char model and subsequently all possible pieces of customization and animations. Also throws cover shooting, parkour, and more out of the window. The right way to go is what Horizon did: their main games in 3rd person and only a spin-off vr game in 1st person. 3rd person games to me are more personal and more immersive because when my character reacts to the environment, whether getting shot at, or expressing emotion through movement and body language, that's a more immersive connection than 1st person that connects me to my character and make me care more.

Basically yes, but you also have to animate the character and the measurements (perspective) need to be correct and aligned. You can't just slap a camera in the air and float it around and say, "this is the world and gameplay".

Tbh quickly choosing FPS for development is a cheap cop out. They can use the immersion argument but devs have also said how easy development is with FPS view. 3rd person challenges devs to know what to put on screen. Plus animations and so on. This game looks perfect for a 3rd person experience but oh well.
