The question was haphazard. It should opened to, would you want someone who showed up 15 minutes early and did mediocre or arrive as the buzzer started but outworked everyone around them? Struggled with depression for years and getting out of bed in the morning is the hardest part of my day. No pill has ever fixed that. Arriving to work before 0700 now in the civilian world is a life and death struggle it seems. 0730, no bother at all. Some people’s clock just don’t adjust I guess, even after five years in the airborne infantry it’s been that way as long as I can remember unless I get 10+ hours of sleep.

Advice I've heard that isn't passive aggressive and doesn't involve lying or throwing away your entire relationship for an issue that can be talked about is to just tell her you no longer want to be late to events because of her and that you'll start going on your own so you can be on time. You're being reasonable and she'll know you're being serious and will either get her shit together or show you that she really doesn't care and at that point, yeah, maybe consider ending the relationship

I hate being late, was always late but learning to get better. Lifetime of abuse causes neural pathways of DISREGULATION - it's like suddenly wearing a snorkel mask, being in a bubble, with visual impairment and chaotic thoughts screaming in your head - your hands don't work properly, you can't use logic or think straight and your heart races thinking I'm going to be late BUT I've not done enough, don't look right, have forgotten something I or the children need... this from a lifetime of being treated like we are "less than a nothing" no matter how much we do or cope with its never enough. The dread of the tirade of abuse on arrival eventually infiltrates every appointment we leave for. Lambs to the slaughter is all we've known - physically shaking as I type. No contact from toxic abusers is the only way to begin healing. Nice for you that you were raised with punctuality, but lateness is a sign of abuse, compassion goes a long way🙏

@ABM-mz5pb3 жыл бұрын
Jocko didn't get it, but Echo's rambling story reveals (maybe unconsciously) the real reason why people are habitually late. Echo was resentful that he was doing something for someone else that wasn't his job and wouldn't be appreciated. So he reclaimed his independence in a passive aggressive way. Instead of confronting his wife and telling her it wasn't his job to get the tomatoes, or instead of accepting that in fact it was his job to get them, he just got resentful of his role and so he chose to not do his job. This suggested to his wife in a passive aggressive way that she shouldn't put this burden on him, and it let him reclaim his independence and autonomy without being up front about it. Being late is the same: it comes when you want to assert that your needs are important but you don't want to state it directly. So you subtly let people know that you are important and there is a limit to what they can ask of you. You assert yourself by making them wait for you, so that now you are the important one. Instead of being responsible, setting clear boundaries, embracing conflict and being a stand up guy, you instead avoid conflict and say yes to everything & everyone; then you get resentful of that burden and end up asserting yourself by being late and making them wait for you and pay attention to you & your importance. It's messed up, but that's what happens. Being late is a passive aggressive behaviour and its underlying cause is avoidance of conflict and a failure to assert yourself in a normal & healthy way. It's not enough to say that it's unacceptable and it shows a lack of respect for others' time. The question is why do you want to disrespect others' time? Because you resent them. Why? Because you believe you are giving them too much. Why? Because you are not asserting your own needs.

i used to be a chronically late person. now, i'm rarely late. i'm still late sometimes, but those situations are things like train/plane delays, or accidents, or miscommunications. even those, i don't believe are acceptable and if i'm late due to something like that, and i didn't do anything to let people know before they had to commit time to me, then i'm the asshole. so how did i change? here's what i did to fix it: - i prioritized 'not being late' over 'what else could i be doing with my time'. the biggest reason i was late is because i was caught up in something and i didn't stop that thing early enough to make sure i was on time. why? because i didn't care enough about not being late, and i subconsciously, and selfishly, believed that my time doing whatever i was doing was more valuable than the time others would waste waiting for me. - i made it a point to notice when other people were late for meetings with me, and would analyze my own feelings about it. at first i thought i didn't really care, but then i realized that i don't like people wasting my time! surely, if i feel that way, then others do too. sometimes i even count the money i could be making if that person weren't late! - i aimed for 15 minutes early in everything, if i'm going to a place that i don't know, i aim for 30. getting lost is a real possibility and i need to account for that. getting into an accident, bad traffic, train/plane delays, all these things are real considerations that we have no control over but we can account for them. - i stopped relying on my own estimates of how long it would take to arrive some place. instead i google it, using tools like waze to estimate traffic flow. - i changed my work schedule so that it would be next to impossible to be late. i was supposed to work 9 to 5, and i decided it would be prudent for me to arrive at 7:15. - i wake up earlier. when i was commuting to work i would wake up at 0400. now i'm a freelancer so i wake up late (0600). some might ask about cultural considerations. some cultures take 'fashionably late' to an extreme (and you know who you are... i'm one of them too!) as a result, i have an unspoken agreement with some of my 'culturally late' friends and family (who are never late for work, by the way) that we would arrive 30 minutes after the set meeting time, and that if we got there early, we'd be the ones to let them know what to do and where to meet.

Very good points (I so feel this in myself when I have been late in the past). So good to hear the "explain to them" part. At the company where I work, here in Japan, it is not considered bullying or misuse of authority to verbally abuse someone who is late. I always felt this was bad leadership when I saw this happening, and spoke out without result. Not I have some more ammunition to reason if the need arises again, thank you!

This is great material thank you! I really connect with what Echo Charles said. I have a problem with showing up late, when I arrive I do deliver great results though. It’s really good to have men just explain what you fellows have explained. Thank you. I think this is good to help me change. It’s a long term pattern for me of being a late. Jocko nails it again. I would always start meetings on time, even if my boss was late. First time he apologised and said, “right, let’s get going”. I replied, “we started 15 mins ago, this is where we are up to”. If you delay a meeting for a person who is late, it teaches those that are late that they can be even later. It also teaches those that are present they can come late. No! Meetings start on time.

Respect, why? Because they pay me? They pay me because I do a job for them. I show up to do the job an I go home. If they think my work isn't good enough then I'll get a different job, makes no fucking difference to me. This ain't communist China sir. I've actually found life to be more tolerant to people like me than suck-ups like you. No one is gonna thank you for showing up early. No one actually gives a shit. And if you think people give a shit about you being 1 minute late then you're also deluded. They're just trying to set an example, see the sort of shit they can get away with. I find that, be it conscious or subconscious, people who are late simply don't value other people's time as much as they do their own. And it's obvious how this is detrimental to the workplace but think about what this says about your relationships. If your partner or your friend is consistently late, consistently making you wait, what does that say about how much they value your time? What does it say about how much they value you?

If you are a good performer who doesn't show up / is reliably late then really you still have responsibility for what happens when you aren't there. If things fall apart in your absence it might seem like that this emphasizes your unique value but in reality it shows an area where you failed to follow through and missed achieving results. Reliability is often more important than performance because people can improve performance over time - if they are showing up - but if they aren't showing up to begin with it's very likely that they aren't very aware of at least some of their own performance problems and are thinking that because they are performing well in one specific way, they can ignore a bunch of other things that matter more than they realize. Awareness, results, and performance itself all are impacted by reliability.

@@petermoore115 yes, work relationships and personal relationships are different but being on time is still important for both relationships. My wife is notoriously late to everything. I would plead with her to do what ever it took to be on time but as you stated, I am not her boss and she will do what she'll do. So, I just started purposefully being late to everything that was important to her. She was a bridesmaid to her friends wedding and I "lost" my shoes and made sure I made us 30 minutes late to it. We were meeting HER friends for dinner and I made sure I was 45 minutes late meeting them there. After a few times of me showing her what it feels like, she started to get how negatively her lateness was effecting our relationship because it was finally effecting HER. Being late every now and then is normal, constantly being late is a character flaw.

Punctuality is about self respect. You're never going to respect others until you can respect yourself. You make not like your life or those in it. You'll like the people you are early for. And they you. Don't let your surroundings stymie your success. Rise above to your destiny (and be early) to it.

Being on time can be detrimental to being reliable. I'm a late owl and made the following adjustments. I cancel everything that doesn't fit my schedule comfortably or I tell them upfront that I'll be late. And I cancelled all jobs and opportunities that don't fit into the time of day I'm most productive. (10am - 9pm) I'd rather move closer to my job or quit than trying to be an hour early. I tried becoming an early bird and it almost cost me my job, because my performance tanked so much. I'd rather have a surgeon who's 5 minutes late but goes through the checklist once more than one who's on time but overlooks a splinter because he's on a timer.

First brought to mgmt (2 people were always late) they made excuses for them and poo,poo it away. I person left but the other still came in late and lives 5 min from work (I'm 30 min away). Finally, took matters into my own hands, told him Repeatedly that it was Just Disrespectful !! No more complaints to office, just changed my schedule to not come in early for him anymore, anytime !! I agree, that it's habitual! ! I am never late, always leave early in case any traffic issues. I know after 12hr I want to go home, and I know that my Co worker is also ready to leave. I should forward the video to mgmt after I find a new job.
