Recently flashy techniques, also known as ‘biohacks,’ have become increasingly popular for healing and regulating the nervous system (especially the vagus nerve). I’ll be speaking about the shortcomings of the ‘hack’ for nervous system healing, as well as why this can be dangerous (cause re-traumatization) for many.

Oh my gosh, I was told to try the shaking/tremor thing and when I did my tremors wouldn't stop all night (kept me awake) and I went into a massive depression and fatigue. The tremors haven't stopped completely and muscle fatigue has come up and now I'm being tested for MS and this has made so much sense- I mean the MS may still be there but the rest completely sounds like what you mention where the system was flooded. I grew up in chronic stress and abuse that I never knew how to release for context.

I think we want to have the quick fix because we feel so uncomfortable and don't have the capacity to be with the uncomfortable so we just want it to go away. I've noticed with myself that since I have more regulation I'm ok to not have something right away.

I am listening to your videos for years and you lead me to Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, Kathy Kain, Peter Rosenberg, Gabor Mate, and more whose books I listend trough on Audible, and it helped me a lot with helping my son process his early medical traumas but I am also full of traumas from early age and recently a medical trauma that I am trying to recover, but I do not really have the capacity to do the work on my own. I do feel like for me, I need a person with me to guide me trough this bc all this books and knowledge is just to much now and I can not use the knowledge. I know the basics and more but it is not enough...

Are you able to seek out a Somatic Experiencing therapist to work with locally or even online? This is the one of the primary practices Irene bases her work in. As Peter Levine says, trauma is healed in connection, so your sense, your intuition, that you need someone to guide you is a really good one.

@@fionasmith5767 I had two sessions with one SE practicioner but Idk if she is as expirienced as Irene. I kind of trust Irene bc I can connect with what she is saying...but I don't think I am ready for SBSM bc it requires we do a lot work alone. Plus it is a big financial risk for me wich puts me in even more stress...I am kind of unsure as to what s the best rout to go...but I feel I could also learn a lot that will be hard to find anywhere else🤔 🙆🤔

@@gg-op9kc Yes - trust is absolutely fundamental in the process of healing trauma. I'm not a member of Irene's team, simply following her excellent work as a fellow SE practitioner, so I can't comment on SBSM. It may be that you want to find another practitioner who has more experience, but do also consider that building this relationship of trust takes time. Have you named your concerns to and with your therapist within the context of the session? Perhaps if you do that, and feel into what comes up for you in your body, guided by her, you'll get closer to establishing that vital sense of trust. I'm sure you'll find the right way forward - you've been guided this far. 🧡

@@gg-op9kc, Jen here from Team Lyon. I saw your comments and have a few related ideas to share with you. First, Somatic Experiencing Practitioners can have a relatively wide variety of training and skillsets and not all are trained in working with medical and/or early trauma. If you haven't yet done so, you might consider asking your practitioner (or another that you consider staring to work with) if they have training and experience in these areas. I also wanted to make sure you're familiar with Irene's 21 Day Nervous System Course. It's more of a starter course where SBSM is a deeper dive, and the "Tune Up" can be a great place to start to see how you respond to doing some work on your own, at your own pace. The cost is $297 USD and if you were to decide to join SBSM at some point in the future, what you pay for the Tune Up is applied towards the cost of SBSM. And as Fiona shared, Irene also has many great free resources too. So there are many options! I"ll link to the "Tune Up" in case you'd like to check it out. 21 Day Nervous System Tune Up - 21daytuneup.com

So the likely reason I had a burnout, and months later, a fibro flare is from trying to rush things via chiro, vagus stim and acupuncture. I came out that I was schizoeffective bipolar type and in a way left with letting go with a lot of harassment that things that had been done. On June eighth I had a non medical transport there and back from Prudent Memorial Hospital and talked about a person I knew who I went to his funeral but really didn’t even know him named Chris Campbell. Then my hair stylist has a teenage son named Chris that works at the store next store. There’s been so much in my mind that seems to be about like you talked about the things that are working and not working but as I always try for self regulation the maintenance of my daily routine but many times can’t get out offight flight or freeze when it seems like people are trying to constantly trying to create feelings in my private parts. Irene I used to work with people with Vocal Toning to give sound to their inner being. I also worked intuitively with sound from singing bowls etc to allow the participant to connect inwardly. I see that something like vocal toning can be used to express and perhaps this is building capacity but you could also use toning to "transcend" which ignores the quote unquote "lower" state and that heals nothing. Am i getting this right?
@IreneLyon
@IreneLyon 11 ай бұрын
@FreeDom-fv8wy, Jen here from Irene's Team. Generally speaking yes, many practices may be used in different ways - both to support presence and connection with oneself and also potentially to bypass and disconnect. I will add that even when practices support presence and connection, they won't necessary support growth in nervosa system capacity and regulation, or the completion of stored self-protective responses as this work can be nuanced at times.

Hi Is neurofeedback a biohack if doing along with neurosomatic work? Since it increases neuroplasticity? What an hyperbaric/infra red…. Not in treatment perspective but do you consider them biohacks?
@IreneLyon
@IreneLyon Жыл бұрын
genevieve Baril, Jen here from Team Lyon. In the context that Irene is using the term, yes, neurofeedback and infrared saunas might be considered biohacks. Keep in mind that not all biohacks are created equally, an some can be complementary to doing nervous system work. It can depend on the person, their unique nervous system, and their intention for engaging in the work. To speak to the approaches you mentioned, neurofeedback can be helpful for some people, others don't notice much change either way, and some find that it worsens their symptoms (based on what we hear from 21D and SBSM students). There are different types of neurofeedback which may have yield different results, and that's not our area of expertise here. If you are drawn to explore it, you might look for someone who is trauma informed (or ideally, trauma trained). An infrared sauna may support the body in healing, as may time in a hyperbaric chamber. And none of these approaches will yield the same benefits that doing the foundational work of growing nervous system regulation and capacity tends to offer over time. I'll share a link to one of Irene's blogs to give you a sense of some of the benefits associated with increased nervous system regulation. 9 Key Benefits we Experience When our Nervous System is Regulated - irenelyon.com/2018/09/30/9-benefits-nervoussystem-regulated/

I need help. I went through divorce, 3 herniated discs in my neck flaring up, & having friends move my stuff to another state because wasn’t fit enough to do so… between the physical & emotional pain, I started having major panic attacks & anxiety multiple times a day that lead to overt & covert tremors or trembling. I had to take 3 baths a day in the beginning to calm down. I’m seeing multiple docs for my neck & trying to restart my life. Still in the divorce depression too. I have a remote job but that gives me anxiety too, & am now having trouble being home alone. I don’t know what to do. 😢

Do you consider using technology like Heart Math to learn how to increase hr coherence and improve hear rate variability and Technology such as NuCalm bio hacks?
@IreneLyon
@IreneLyon Жыл бұрын
kiupti, Jen here from Team Lyon. In short, yes, they would be considered biohacks from this perspective but that doesn't mean that they can't have some value and be complementary to this nervous system work. For example, a HeartMath device may help you to learn about when you are in coherence, and may help you to grow access to feelings of connection. This is not the same as taking growing foundational nervous system regulation and capacity, and it can be complementary to doing so.

I got a move in date for a different board in care still here in Santa Rosa on Thursday the 22nd of September, 2022. Meanwhile to connect with the environment to me is like rebuilding schedule but when I pause, connect to my body there’s so much I want to express and learn. There was a near bus accident and needed a somatic practitioner instead I asked Jerry if he could touch me. On three different instances he touched my private parts. I smoke cigars as a kind of ritual but the neighbors Steve and Tina who are neighbors from the smoking area outback have dog poo in there yard and are growing Marijuana. It’s like there’s no fresh air. I have a roommate now from spending almost a year here in a room by myself. Then one of my roommates Holly died and another awoled but now my new case manager was also the case manager of Holly. I am French, English, Sweatish and Indian and also have known a different Holly from the city of Sonoma where I lived for age 2-18. I was born in San Francisco and have lived in Santa Rosa over twenty years.

HI Becky M, Jen here from Team Lyon. I really depends, on both the "hack" and on the someone's personal history and unique nervous system. Sometimes they can be a helpful complement to taking steps to grow nervous system regulation, other times they can be reinforce existing survival patterns, be overstimulating and/or even destabilizing, and sometimes they may not have much of an impact.

I've almost died from going to cold water after sauna, so now I know why,even though I don't have any physical condition 😉 The worst part is, the person is doing "retreats" and all kinds of "healing" stuff, but didn't notice what was going on with me, left me alone lying down outside naked in winter. At the moment I felt very good, having adrenaline rushing through my body, but I was in shock and frozen for months after that experience. I recently reminded myself about being left in cold as a baby, I grew up in cold house, so that was probably the cause of my strong reaction to cold, maybe also I was bathed in cold water. My point is, strong experiences may be very dangerous. And if I spoke to this person about the situation (hippie and happy young man), he'd probably say "well you're alive so what's the problem?". On top of that, his son died just 2 weeks after my visit there. There's a lot going on, with substances and sex, which are pictured as healing, which for deeply traumatised people it may be dangerous.
