After many years of struggles at Birmingham City, both on an off the pitch the recent take over of the club by Tom Wagner and Knighthead have got Blues fans excited about the future. At the time of recording this podcast Birmingham City are struggling to hang onto their EFL Championship status with a real possibility of relegation to EFL League One. Despite this there is still room for plenty of optimism for the future given the investment that has already been made in the club and the further investment and plans that the owners have planned for the club.
In this podcast we discuss how the new owners have breathed new life into this great club and how their future plans will change Birmingham City forever. We discuss some of the things that the owners have already done and why the future if the club is in very good hands and why Blues fans should be excited.

What I love about this podcast is you feel like you’re sitting in the pub with your mates Gary and Matt, always positive. My take is if we get relegated it’s a penalty and when you get a penalty you take a step or two back to get a good run up and bust the net! We’re on the rise. (I wish you two were doing Blues TV)

Thank you Gary that is greatly appreciated. Not what we wanted however the league table does’t lie and we simply weren’t good enough over the season. Ncfc fan - After watching your Birmingham vs Norwich preview Video, Got me interested to watch your next video and to keep a eye on birmingham''s future. As a outsider looking in, it would appear that birmingham fc can never match Villa as club, or could they? but as a championship club - birmingham fc is as big as any leading championship clubs, in name..... Going down is not that bad - if the rebuild is positive - We (norwich) fell out of prem - then found ourselfs fall to league one - but we came back ok.... lots have fallen even man city - look how that turned out.

Thank you very much for your comment. For the first tine in my living memory we have amazing owners at this club and they only came in last July and have not been able to impact on the squad so far due to FFP restrictions from the previous owners. That is about to change. Even if the worst happens we are going to see a major overhaul of our squad in the summer and we are hopeful that we can finally start to be competitive in the League for the first time in many years. It might not look like it right now but our future is exceptionally bright. Good luck to Norwich City and your fans for the Play Offs. KRO

On that performance against Birmingham we won’t win nothing - I just watched a poor Norwich performance and don’t deserve a play off spot - if that was watched by someone as there first championship game - you would think Norwich and Birmingham was reversed places

Thanks guys for the positivity, I’m on board with your views, I hope we survive but if we go down I think it will be a chance to assemble a new squad and learn to win again and build unbeatten runs which I think we’ve forgotten how to do. Thanks Richard, Absolutely agree that Knighthead aren't here to mess about. They will want us out of that division as quickly as possible which gives them even more incentive to spend some money and get us some competitive characters. I hope the recruitment don't just look at talent but character, are they fighters, do they play with desire? We are missing this so badly with the current squad. That goes for whatever division we end up starting in next year... Very best, KRO!

For the first time in my life - I know OUR time is coming As was in Manchester- so will be in birmingham . We feel it , and they know it . Relegation won't stop it . B6 short foray into the champions league next season , is the last throw . Our journey is just starting ...its going to be massive , just be patient 💙

@@SmallHeathAllianceFC - Taking the emotion out of it , these people are American business people, they won't stand for any crap . The vision is already set . If they have decided to build a modern stadium and set up for the midlands , to host football - concerts - and other activities on a 365 day a year basis - you can guarantee it will be done . Look at spurs with their nfl contacts , now the richest club in London. I dont in anyway compare blues to spurs , but Tottenham s is just a stadium . Because of the acreage blues have , this could be so much more . Man city have 80 acres , what a set up that is , but thats on the edge of town . Blues new stadium is 1 train stop , or a 40 min walk into the city centre . It will be immense . The great thing is ,following the american model , people will be turning up to games 3 or 4 hours before for a beer , maybe food as well , and 3 hours after . There will be music and activities on site , and all that money goes back into the club , allowing the club to grow . KRO & FEA 🤣

Completely agree, lots of good times ahead at Blues. I’m most looking forward to signing decent players over the coming years. We’ve signed some great players in our recent history (eg, Larsson, Dugarry, Savage, Lazaridis, etc) but it’s been tough last few years signing mediocre players…. Even worse, on big wages. A bright future is on the way. KRO

Thank you for your comment. As we said in the podcast, due to FFP restrictions from the previous owners the one thing that the current owners have had little influence on so far is the playing squad. That will change in the summer and it will be very interesting to see the players that will be joining us. KRO

I remember the toilets at the back of the Kop, bovril and warm pie 🥧 what’s happening at Stans sounds like heaven!

Thank you for your comment. I remember those toilets in the old Kop they were awful. It was like a very small corridor with fans coming in and trying go get out from both sides. In fact a lot of fans would not bother using the toilets and you would be standing in the packed Kop and get that warm feeling at the back of your legs during the match! Happy days! KRO

Kind of knew it would come down to this. It feels like the night before Christmas! Tomorrow is a cup final. Question: would Rooney have had us in this position?

Thank you for your comment and as you point out tomorrow really is a cup final for us. There is no doubt that the Rooney decision and era was damaging to our season but I don't prescribe to the opinion that it was that alone that got us to where we are now. Yes, it contributed to our points tally but Rooney was sacked at the beginning of January so the club/players have had plenty of opportunity to get us out of trouble. In my opinion, if Rooney had stayed I think we would have been already relegated. When you think that Burke and Aiwu were first choices under him then that is a recipe for disaster. Rooney argues that he wanted to bring in his own players but even if this was the case due to FFP restrictions in January he could not have brought in many players anyway, certainly not enough to make a difference. Hopefully we can get a win against Norwich and find a way of staying up but in any event we will be onto bigger and better things and hopefully put this season to the back of our minds. KRO

One of the reasons we wanted to do this podcast is that we know that there is a lot of worries and frustrations around at the moment in the Blues fanbase however, we wanted to remind everyone that no matter what happen this season, our future is exceptionally positive. We will all be glad to see the back of this season that is for sure however, from the summer we can look forward to brighter times. I'm sure if the worst happens we will get laughed at by some fans of other clubs, but all I would say is let them laugh! They have no idea what is about to happen at this club, but we do, and I certain that any laughing or ridicule will be short lived. KRO

We have had so many years of poor owners, let downs and poor performances on the pitch that we are all eager for that you change. For the first time I can remember i really think that things will actually change but far beyond anything I thought I would ever see in my lifetime. I thought Wagner said we had the fastest growing revenue outside the parachute payment clubs, I've not heard say it is the biggest except that's the aim, unless I missed something? Anyway nice to see a but of positivety, what's happening on the pitch now isn't just about this season but is the legacy of 10 years of neglect, I'm confident that the next 10 years will be profoundly different for Blues!

Thank you for your comment Neil. I think it was Garry Cook who presented the financials at the Open House and you may be right about the wording so we will take another look. Either way it was very encouraging and a real surprise given where we are in the league. It just shows how much hard work that is going on in the background something we never see as fans. Yes, many years of neglect have let to where we are today but at least we can see where the new owners want to take us and I'm sure they will get us there which is the really exciting part! KRO

If we do go down I wont be as depressed about it as I would have been if these new owners had not come in. The thing I like most about them is their willingness to let the supporters know exactly what they want for the future of the club and that can be summed up in one word..... Success. Also I get the feeling that Mr Wagner, although a businessman, actually cares about the club and he's not just here for the beer. A mass clear out is definitely needed, we have some good individual players but we do not have a good team . Its a bit ironic but although we may be going down, things are looking up.

I'm so happy that we have Tom Wagner at the wheel. I also get the impression that he has a lot of affection for the club. Yes, he is a business man and yes he is clearly here to make money however he has really shown a passion for the club and the fans and the Blues fans will always respect that. KRO

As you say - red reset button - near total clearout - and build from there. These owners have a plan from top to bottom - the whole thing - proper management - and we've not had that in many many years - we must support them just as much as they are supporting us. We'll get there.

I have every confidence that we have better times ahead and that they will get us to where they want us to be. This summer is very important and I think we will start to see the rebuilding of a competitive squad which is what we have lacked this season. KRO

@@SmallHeathAllianceFC Cheers - agreed on all points. There's a huge number of closet Blues fans who over the last ten years or so have found it painful to attend. With good ownership and management (which we finally have now - instead of crooks), I am sure the new stadium will be filled. Actually, relagation is possibly the best starting point in some ways. Well..... today has arrived, I never expected us to find ourselves in the position we do as we head into the final game of the season. The start of the season was so different to the now. Our immediate future has to be survival. 2024/2025 Championship club. I'm full of mixed emotions waking up this morning. Today has to see us pull off the greatest of greatest escapes. Time to get ready, catch the train, have breakfast, grab a beer or two and then head to St Andrews. Come on you Blue Boys. KRO 💙

I think all Blues fans will be going to the match hoping for something special but at the same time also expecting the worst. It’s not a nice place to be as a fan and I really hope that this is the last time we are in this position. With the crowd behind them I really think the boys can get the win. The new owners have made one glaring mistake , Rooney ! However with all the good things they have done we can forgive them that one . Surely that was a lesson learned and we move on , new ground on the horizon , match day experience improved , millions spent on st andrews . Yet here we are fighting for our lives on the last day of the season ! Our mentality has got to change , no more idolising second rate players ( i wont name them ) we have to look towards better class players i.e. Man city in the early days when they started there journey . All we have to do is fill the ground KRO

Thank you for your comment. As you point out Rooney was a clear and obvious mistake but as you also point out, everything else has been amazing so far. There also appears to be lots of great work going on behind the scenes to improve the club and increase revenue which is undoubtedly down to Garry Cook and his team. All of this will provide us with the ability to buy better players and I would hope that the vast majority of Blues fans will see this and be able to see past that one glaring mistake. KRO

Lovely positive and realistic video guys. Relegation at this time would be unfair on Blues supporters. Yes, our form suggests it’d be fair based on performances, but I’m thinking those fans that go week in, week out and have done for years during BSH and got very little return. Now we have the owners we want and deserve and we face this prospect. That said it reminds me of when Sullivan / Gold bought us in 93 and we were relegated the next season. Perhaps we have to go through that to move the club forward again? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Football has changed so much since then that avoiding relegation tomorrow surely gives us the best hope. KRO.

Thank you for your comment Mark. Yes, avoiding relegation is what we all want and i think we can do it. We have a full house to spur the boys on and some of the other teams in the mix have awkward fixtures. It would be a shame if the worst happens at the same time we have finally got great owners. However, as we said in the podcast, we can be more confident that these owners will back the club to get to where they want us to be rather than still be under BSHL and face a journey that none of us would want. Thank you for your comment. If we can stay in the Championship it will make recruitment of better players easier, but even if the worst happens I think we can have confidence that we can still attract decent players if they can be convinced to buy into the vision. KRO

The owners cannot invest money directly into the team whilst we are in the Championship so putting money into the corporate side to generate money to spend on players. That is slightly different in League One but hopefully we will dodge that bullet tomorrow. Spending money on St A's despite the planned new ground is to bring the money in to spend. Five years is a long time and we cannot afford to wait until the new ground is really. KRO and fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Absolutely Paul. Regardless of division next season, there is going to be a huge overhaul and let's hope the recruitment look at things like desire and courage, bravery, fight etc. Not just talent. We have been lacking leadership and grit. Need more players like this. Very best, KRO!

Great video gents, i think you've covered what most of us are thinking and agree with. Whatever happens tomorrow, it won't be the disaster it could have been under the old regime. It will be interesting to see who we sign during the summer, selling the ambition and what the future holds for our club. If we do stay up, or go down, do you think the type of player we can attract will be a lot different? Your thoughts.

Thank you for your comment David. It's a good question you raise as I think the type of player we attract in the summer will be influenced by which division we are in. Ultimately, players will want to play at the highest level possible and League One will undoubtably put some players off. What we have however is that we could sell them the vision and that may be enough to encourage them to drop down a division in the hope of being part of a much bigger future. Obviously we are all hoping that we can stay in the Championship as that will really help but if the worst happens I can still see us assembling a decent team that can get us out of League One quickly and start the building blocks of a competitive Championship team. Last year the club owed over £120m and were renting a ground with two stands open. We now have the ground refurbished and back to capacity. The debts have been cleared and we have ambitious owners with big plans for the club. Relegation is a setback but we have the infrastructure and financial clout to bounce back bigger and stronger. The difficulty will be the massive turnaround in playing squad and hitting the ground running. I'd probably give Juke and Ruddy another year and try to hang on to as many of our contracted players so we have continuity.

Thanks for commenting always appreciated! Yeah, my only big concern I would say is how long it takes the new players that come in to gel. I am happy the reset button is being pressed and a lot of players will be leaving but let's hope the recruitment is absolutely on it, as I mentioned in the video goalscorers are important and various other skill sets and attributes but we need to look at their character and we need fight, desire and leadership. Thank you for your question. Parachute payment only apply to relegated Premier League club which they get for three years after relegation on a diminishing basis. Our parachute payments finished years ago so we have been used to not having them for a long time. KRO

Thanks for commenting :) This is a really good question. I'm not sure why but I don't feel like he will return. I think he might retire or stay away from football for a while. He seems like a family man and that will be the most important thing to him. I have absoluely no idea btw this is just my thoughts, I just hope he is okay and on the road to recovery with his family around him. Not sure about alternatives as I am fully concentrating on this final game but I think we will hear soon from the club either way as they will want a full summer with a gaffer in charge. Thank you for your comment. I think there is a possibility that JJ could be sold regardless of what happens. The club will have a clear vision of the types of players they want and if that does not include JJ then he would bring in some decent money to help strengthen the squad further. KRO

It's a very physical league and clubs like Derby, Sunderland, Bolton, Portsmouth etc have spent a good while down there. I guess the positive is that these owners are serious and they aren't hanging around. They won't want us down there for very long. Very best, KRO!

Well this is it we are nowhere near as skillful as Norwich thay have more strings in there bow. so it's time to get nasty. let them know from the get go that every single tackle is 100% don't want to see anyone injured but you do need to plant that seed in the Norwich team they have big games ahead for us this is it

Blues would have went down with Eustace anyhow. His game play was one dimensional, was being predicted by opposition sides, and this relegation has been coming for years.

Led to believe heard it from someone who works there - would be a fantastic addition before the move to wheels. Seen pics of the box area and plans to put glass windows towards the city. The investment is such that you want to pinch yourself to make sure its really happening onwards and upwards. Have a great final day KRO

I don't think our club will be an easy fix. We have to completely rebuild our team and this will be alot harder if we are in league one. If we get relegated I'm not sure we would get promoted straight away.

We know that trying to get out of League One is difficult however we will be backed by our owners and we will see a completely different squad for the start of next season. Given that we have 10 players out of contract and 5 loanees that will go back, we cab start with a clean slate. I also think we will see some contracted players also being sold. KRO

Donovan has done well in the U23's however I don't think he will be picked for this game. It will be great to see Jukey play some part tomorrow, and I'm sure he will in what could be his last game for us. Really sad if this is his last game though. KRO

Thank you for your comment. I agree that the sacking of John Eustace is not the main reason we are in this position. We were in a false position when he was sacked and there were murmurs of discontent in the fan base about John’s style of football. Interestingly, although he did not take us down he could play a part in keeping us up if his Blackburn side lost to Leicester and we can beat Norwich. I actually thank John Eustace for his time at Birmingham and after today’s matches wish him all the best for the future. KRO

Thanks for commenting :) Yeah, we certainly have a ceiling of talent we can attract in League 1 but I still think we will attract the best of that ceiling, look at Ipswich, I know they have brought a few players in but that is predominantly their League 1 side. You can come up and be strong. Let's hope we have some better recruitment if the worst happens tomorrow. I am still really hopeful. I think the players need to own up to there part in our league position however whatever happens today let’s draw a line under this season and move onto our brighter future together. KRO
