Why buy a BLUE SNOWBALL in 2018?

The Blue Snowball is a microphone notorious for being the go-to for beginner KZfaqrs and streamers. There's a love-hate relationship between it and those with more experience. I started with one, myself, and still usually recommend newcomers to stay away from it - but it is time to put that notion to the test. How does the Blue Snowball sound in 2018?

To be honest, to anyone who needs a microphone only for gaming, streaming, and basic voice overs, a basic usb mic is ALL you'll ever need. I would only consider jumping into xlr equipment if your going to be working with audio professionally, like voice acting and music production. Because I won't be going into either of those anytime soon, I'll stick with my editors keys sl300 for now.

the problem with shitty mics is mainly the miss Communications and background noise. Have you ever talked to someone and hear something like a vacuum in the background? that can get quite anoying when talking to the same person everyday.

yea I'm sorry I'm already heading to XLR I got my mobile pre amp and I'm just waiting for the mic to show up in the mail and you should look at several singers and you tubers that use XLR and how it sounds versus the snowball and other mics out there there is a difference but the snow isn't bad for beginners that are just getting started and Don't know jack crap about anything.

My teenage son has one, on a boom arm much like yours, that he uses for Discord and other online talk -- and occasionally to record audio tracks for school video assignments. And it's great for all that -- compact, looks cool, works fine. I wouldn't like it just on that little tripod though, as you said. No driver problems on Win 7, 8 or 10 so far.

@TheKoppite
@TheKoppite 5 жыл бұрын
Most people will record them separately... so for example use the camera to record your video footage and use the microphone to record audio directly to your computer. I use audacity for my audio recording as its free and you have a ton of options for improving the sound quality. To make sure when you are editing that both the video and audio are in sink you can always do something at the beginning of your recording such as a countdown of "3... 2... 1..." then clap... Hope this makes sense?

Quite honestly, $50 in 2018 isn't much money. There are other microphones for cheaper, yes, however they don't have as sharp a sound. This microphone is a little bulky and definitely far from perfect, but the price and quality of the microphone make it a perfect mic for someone who needs something better than just "some" microphone. I had one a couple years ago, and loved it until I upgraded to the xlr at2020 and the uphoria um2. I now have the scarlett solo

I started on Audio Technica ATM63HE hypercardioid dynamic microphone on TASCAM US-122L (connected wrong, obviously, as it doesn't work on anything newer than Windows 7. It was pretty bad). I then moved onto another Audio Technica, the ATR-3350 omnidirectional lavalier condenser microphone. After that, I upgraded to the Sennheiser e835 cardioid dynamic microphone plus Pyle PDUSBPP10, after messing around with the Audio Technica ATM63HE again, and later upgraded my interface to Behringer U-Phoria UMC204HD. I then got a Behringer B-1 cardioid condenser microphone for overheads, and soon, I'm getting a Behringer Ultravoice XM8500 cardioid dynamic microphone to mic up a second person. I still have the PDUSBPP10, but it is now exclusively for travel. And the ATR-3350? Yep. My brother moved from the ATR-3350-XLR to the Samson Meteor cardioid condenser USB microphone (a *much* needed upgrade). And in this house, you won't see a single BLUE product.

Just ordered one of these myself as my laptop doesn't actually have an audio jack for microphones so I have been using a real basic mic which I got years ago on Wish for about £10.00. My USB audio adaptor recently broke as it was extremely poor quality and I needed a quick solution to keep up with my uploads and schedule. Initially I decided that a new USB audio adaptor would be the cheapest option for me but I knew I needed one which was better quality than my previous one. So I purchased one...Then I found that the microphone I have been using was extremely quiet. This is when I decided a USB mic would be the best option for me... I've been searching and searching trying to decide which option would be a reasonable price without loosing to much quality. I have watched many reviews comparing microphones and even listened to videos which compare quality and I can't really understand why someone would go against the blue snowball... I saw a video which was Snowball vs Yeti and this was a video made from just unboxing and plugging in so without changing any settings. IMO the blue snowball has much much crisper sound than the yeti. Of course I am yet to use it but I thought I would leave a comment explaining my situation in case someone else may be in a similar situation to me.

I feel like the Fifine K669b pretty much defeats the value proposition of this microphone. Granted it's a relatively new product vs an older one, but at $30 my experience with it was it sounds just as good if not better than a snowball. Was pretty surprised. Dunno if you've had a chance to check that one out, but would be cool to see you review one.

It's great that you do the ac test! I have a rack running a couple switches in my closet and it helps me get a idea of background noise in my environment. The snowball is so garbage when it comes to background noise, especially the ICE version. But it definitely is the go-to choice for group conversations. Before switching to a headset I used a pop filter for my snowball which helped with alot of my audio issues I used to have.

Personally I would 100% recommend this microphone. In this video he is using raw audio. even with loud fans on your PC, simple audacity editing can take out most of that noise and it really isn't a problem anymore. The problems with connecting to Windows 10 that he had I believe would just be a problem specifically regarding yours only, I plugged mine in and it worked fine and I did some testing and figured out what to do to make it really sound good. Affordable and all you need just starting out.

I got the blue snowball for like 25-30 bucks from Kmart's website at the end of 2016. It's worked perfectly fine on windows 10 without having to do any workarounds. Also, the warranty just ended in December and two weeks ago it stopped working, I contacted Blue and after explaining the situation, they approved my RMA. I should be getting the replacement some time next week. Overall, for the right price, I completely recommend the blue snowball.

i dunno about any of the blue mics. the fifine k699 does very good for a beginning mic, and is 20 bucks cheaper. and the razer seiren has much better audio than that of the blue yeti, and is the same price, but more compact and uses a universal base. this is not hate, blue mics are very good mics, its just that they have gotten overtaken by newer mics.

To be honest, I couldn't really tell the difference between the different modes, at least in your situation here. Maybe it's just because your audio setup and quality is just so good that just wouldn't even make that much of a difference anyways?

The blue snowball was used for first verse (feature), the chorus and second were recorded by cad u37 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jJ6qo5yb37nXZ58.html With that being said, how you set up your recording space matters as the first verse wasn’t recorded in ideal conditions. If recording music vocals on the snowball I would suggest getting a boom adapter for the standard mic stand and eq-ing some low-mid and mid-high frequencies a little higher. Great first mic and I use it when I want a warmer low end.

If I chose between snowball and yeti, is the snowball good enough?
@TheKoppite

I literally chose the snowball over the yeti this morning... I am planning on using it for gaming commentaries. I am no expert about microphones and have never used either but after doing some research, I found that I just preferred how the snowball sounded over the yeti. Any comparison videos I have watched, I found that the snowball seemed to pick up less background noise and the yeti had either humming or hissing noises. Of course this could just be due to the set up used in the video but I based my final decision on what I heard so maybe do the same? Check out some videos which directly compare both mics recording at the same time. I'm hoping that my laptops fan noise won't be picked up though :D

@@brsph1456 For gaming and commentaries the Snowball is fine... Of course the Yeti has more controls and may be of better quality (I have never used a Yeti so can't compare) But the Snowball is more than capable of high quality for voice overs and commentaries If you need a mic for music or something like that, than I would 100% say go for the Yeti

This is what i would love to know! I think the Snowball Ice (slightly cheaper version of the snowball) would most likely be fine for gaming... I just ordered one as I needed to get an alternative quickly to keep up with my upload schedule and after a lot of research I thought the snowball ice was the best option For gaming I don't think you need all of the extra stuff that the more expensive mics give you... Most gamers only need a mic to record there voice so something which records from only the front of the mic and blocks out any surrounding noise is all you need... The snowball ice is exactly that... I'm no expert on mics and have only ever owned one which was ordered years ago from Wish for £10.00 I thought it was time for an upgrade lol

6:33 "Just like photography, the further away from your subject you are, the less likely the pictures is to be clear, or high quality" Incorrect, that is actually the opposite. The greater the distance, the greater the depth of field. As a result, a greater the plane of focus will be had and more of the subject will be in focus/better focus. What you meant was composition but even that is subjective.
@EposVox
@EposVox 5 жыл бұрын
Uhhh you only further added to my point. If you're shooting a specific *subject* - in this case, a singular person. Because, you know, that's who would be talking into the mic. If you really want detail of that person and not a bunch of distracting detail of the background and everything else going around... you want to get up close, so that the subject dominates the frame and you have a more shallow depth of field and the background is even just slightly blurred out.... Same with audio... you don't want it far away picking up EVERYTHING.... you want it up close just picking up YOU. There are obviously use cases where a giant deep depth of field is desirable - and same with recording audio of everything in a scene. But the analogy applied to the use case of a single person voiceover vs single person subject photography still definitely holds up. Just gotta think a little deeper/more applied ;)
@Yes-ml4bw
@Yes-ml4bw 5 жыл бұрын
Lol. Clearly, one of us is a photographer and the other isn't...Subject isolation is depth of field AND composition. If you want a shallow depth of field, sure you would get closer but if you know anything about lenses, the shallower the depth of field, the less is in focus. E.g. shooting a tight head shot @ 1.4 results in an out of focus background(bokeh/blurry) but you will only have the eyes, and maybe the nose in focus.. That is why higher mp bodies are popular, so they can shoot from a greater distance for the greater depth of field, and have the freedom to crop. The analogy would have been fine if you knew what you were talking about... Stick to commentary about mics...
@EposVox
@EposVox 5 жыл бұрын
Except you're assuming this is going to extremes. "Getting closer to the subject" doesn't mean having the lens touching their nose and your aperture wide open. I am a photographer and a professional videographer. You refusing to understand how a basic analogy makes perfect sense for this comparison by being literally a teeny bit flexible from what you're getting at is on you, has nothing to do with my experience or expertise. Composition analogy applies to mic usage as well, just in case you were curious. The analogy works other than when you want to get stick-up-your-ass super nitpicky about details by taking it to extremes instead of using generalized application in the first place. Your so-called higher level of understanding or expertise is useless if you can apply it more generally/to someone else's point of view. You're not smarter than anyone else if you can't put it to their perspective. You're just an asshole. Speaking generally about a topic to a general audience, the analogy holds up perfectly fine.

I found Blue has some terrible quality control, in my experience anyway. I remember getting, and returning about 5 of these each one faulty. I had bad (so so bad) noise (hissing), frequent highs and dips in volume, sometimes no audio at all, a "grrr" sound in recording which got worse the more it was used, some crackling, turning itself off mid-recording, and in one instance only "Mode 3" working as intended. This of course, not including all the driver issues I've had with Windows and Linux. I've since used a Yeti, and had no problems. All the same, I avoid Blue microphones these days because of my bad luck with them.
