In their first product release since announcement of Logitech buying them out, Blue have released the "Yeti Nano" - a smaller partner to the prolific Blue Yeti microphone. The Yeti Nano comes in many cool colors, offers cardioid and omnidirectional pickup patterns, and realtime monitoring at a... confusing price.

Great review for the little one. I do use a Blue Yeti. But I have a pop filter and it sits nearly mouth high on my desk, so for the most part, I think it sounds fine. Since I don't have a boom to connect it to, if I need to record stuff with me touching around the desk, I'll get a cup-towel and sit it under the mic stand. that has worked great for dampening the vibrations of hitting the desk. :)

Review the blue digital spark. It's probably the best quality USB mic I've ever heard
@justice5150
@justice5150 3 жыл бұрын
I got this mic as a replacement for my old Blue Spark microphone that had a warranty. This was the only replacement option. They made me break the USB port on that microphone, take pics & send it to them for confirmation before they would send me a new mic. Needless to say I'm not really that happy with it. Feels like my ancient ATR2100 is better. If you want a decent mic for streaming/youtube, and aren't worried about background noise, pick this up. (Get the $6 Size A Yeti Pro Foam Mic Cover w/ it) If you want to go bigger w/ better quality, get a different XLR mic.

Hi epos! A couple of questions if you could advise a videoconferencing tutor who's trying to go pro: any reason why someone would spend extra for an XLR mic/interface for Skype sessions? How would you compare the mute button of yeti nano versus yeti? I use it a lot in classes and yeti's click is so noisy it's annoying. It should be just a touch button imo. How would you compare the usb port/cable of yeti nano versus yeti? Mine had a broken cord and now a damaged port in under a year. Your OBS videos have helped me a lot. Being able to use OBS scene transitions instead of that horrible screen sharing really saved me. Your studio decoration in earlier videos (as well as mkbhd's) also inspired me to create something of my own that would look pleasant. Your current setting doesn't look as nice though lol. Thank you!
@EposVox
@EposVox 5 жыл бұрын
Just for Skype sessions, probably not -- unless background noise is a real issue for you, then at least a dynamic mic (even if it's a USB one like the Samson Q2U or Rode Podcaster) would be a good choice. TBH I don't have enough time in with the Yeti yet (have not messed with its mute button yet and it's in a box at the moment) but iirc the Nano's mute button is fairly quiet

Some generic ancient mic arm I've had for years, not really important lol. Re: USB hubs/extensions - some mics require a lot of power draw, which some extension cables or non-powered hubs can't support and the mic just won't work or will disconnect a lot. Plus, Windows is very picky about USB sound drivers and bandwidth, so hooking up to a hub can cause disconnects, driver stalls, pops, static, etc. Just wanna avoid it altogether.
@gamingwithegoon
@gamingwithegoon 5 жыл бұрын
ah that makes scence, my 2 extension cords are high quality and its not connected to a extra hub so that would be why it does work. to the ts: get a Neewer mic arm if you want a cheap 1, works great for my blue yeti

Here in finland the yeti is usually something like 140€, when the nano is about 90€, so theres a 50€ gap for me to use on a boom arm for example. Also imo theyre identical in sound and i dont need the 2 other niche sound modes.

I get mine for 94$CAN (68$US) with a discount, I think it's a good deal. I bought also a boom arm and a pop filter (you explained really well why this stand included is useless). I would like a shock mount too but I am confused about that (not compatible with thoses made for the Yeti Blue / Pro). I found the Knox Gear Blue Yeti Nano but it's BO.
@alexandrebouvier7731
@alexandrebouvier7731 4 жыл бұрын
Update : I received my boom arm and my pop filter, totally worth it (both are really useful and complementary) ! I passed from mediocre (the webcam mic), to good (yeti nano) to excellent (yeti nano + boom arm + pop filter). The shock mount is good if you play music but for podcasting / voice recording / voip it's not necessary (just be careful and don't touch your boom arm during your record). The Radius III is compatible with the yeti nano I think but it's overpriced. At 100$CAN it's not worth it (for my needs). I am happy with my setup, it's crisp and clear now.

I use Linux Ubuntu 20.04 and it's works really great without any specifics software. If you use this system you need to modify your pulseaudio config file and reset pulseaudio in your terminal because your microphone is 24 bits / 48 khz (and the config files is set by default at 16 bits / 44 khz. Same thing to change on windows and macos. These OS use an other sound server of course but the principle is the same.

They have plenty of room for a better than decent quality headphone amplifier in there. The original Yeti runs the headphone output off a MAX9722A, i think they just limit the output gain to not deafen somebody on accident. And of course CM6400 16-bit soundcard, because cheap.
@SianaGearz

W2AEW unearthed an ancient clipper/compressor circuit from the 60ies or 70ies that is super simple and pretty much only suitable for vocal microphones, but it would be perfect to integrate, it can be made on just a few square millimetres these days with SMD components, and dirt cheap too. I guess these manufacturers are simply not into research and effort these days, the features are always marketing driven, and marketing probably says, this is for clueless customers, they don't give a shit.

Why do you prefer dynamic mics over condenser?
@EposVox
@EposVox 5 жыл бұрын
Condensers are designed for completely sound treated studio space recordings to get a natural sound to be cleanly treated w/ post-production effects/mixing. Dynamic mics are designed specifically for broadcast scenarios with imperfect sound situations to reject background sound and provide a vocal sound that cuts across everything else. Condensers are great for voiceover and narration and music in a studio. Dynamics are great for content creation/live streaming at a noisy desk.
@SpencerDean14
@SpencerDean14 5 жыл бұрын
@@EposVox cool gotcha. A buddy was recommending I get a condenser for KZfaq (400 subs, nothing major just need to upgrade audio) but I was gonna go with the Q2U after seeing your vid on it with the 30-40 interface you also recommended... But what you just said lines up with my research, and I have an open room with a great Dane puppy haha so imperfect scenario is the definition of my recording environment. Thanks man! 😊

About bit depth/sample rate: You make no mention of those parameters in this video, but I see that despite its cheaper price tag, the Nano can do 24 bits, whereas the pricier Blue Yeti is only capable of 16 bits. Doe this - in your opinion - let the Nano achieve a higher audio fidelity?

Mechanical keyboards are the current trend for gaming use - with many objective benefits, including the right config alleviating substantial pain in my hands while typing - but the actual mechanical switches involve share very little with the buckling spring mechanisms of old school keyboards.

Good video, but that mic -- What a mess. The plosives are terrible, which I guess Blue would explain by saying "well, it's designed to be farther away, on your desktop" -- which, as you say, is never the way to get best sound. Lots of noise too -- maybe it would help to lower the gain, then boost it in post, but....I was never able to find a good balance of the hardware and software gain controls on my full-size Yeti either. If it was a little heavier, I'd use it as a doorstop. Thanks for the effective demo and thorough review.

Yeeeah, I feel this way about most USB mics.
@bradleypariah
@bradleypariah 5 жыл бұрын
In all fairness, the plosives are because he's not using a pop filter (which he mentioned) or a foam cap. Microphones ALWAYS have plosives when you talk directly into the diaphragm. I feel like the inclusion of the crappy table mount/stand is just a throw-away offering for people that aren't super serious. SM57s come with those crappy, super-hard mic clips, and that doesn't mean you have to use them, or that you shouldn't invest in shock mounts. It's just a "gimme." I have the original Yeti, on a desk-mounted boom arm, with a shock mount, AND a pop filter, and my VO work comes out super passable. I make commercials and training videos for a living. If my Yeti died, I'd have no problem asking my work to pay for a Nano, but I'd put it right into the same hardware. I went to college for audio engineering, and I know this isn't what an audiophile would consider a "nice" microphone, it's no U87, RE20, SM7B, or 414, but it comes down to "right tool for the job," and "if it sounds good, it IS good."
@EposVox
@EposVox 5 жыл бұрын
A lot of the nice dynamic mics have built-in pop filters so you don't get plosives. But yeah, I wasn't using one - but also with a new mic there won't be custom-fit pop filters yet, and blocking your entire face with the flyswatter style just isn't worth it.
@bradleypariah
@bradleypariah 5 жыл бұрын
You don't need a custom-fit pop filter. Just buy one that attaches to your mic stand or boom arm. That's what I have. My Yeti came with a custom pop-filter, but I didn't like it.
