Two Minute Music Theory

4 жыл бұрын

I've gotten a lot of questions over the last 5 years. Some of them more than others, so today I'm starting an FAQ series.
The note names in Western Music seem to be a little off? Why is the key with no sharps or flats C major and not A major? So, how did the notes get their names? It's a convoluted journey - spanning 1500 years and involving much of Europe.

I was always taught that concert pitch is the A (440Hz) above middle C, not C itself.

Hey first of all I would like to tell you that you answered my age old curiosity. I into music theory over a decade still never felt like learning a bit of history and here I come to the point which book or resource or KZfaq channel or anything would you recommend to me for learning music history from group up. (I AM ONLY INTERESTED INTO WRSTERN MUSIC HISTORY AND I AM A TOTAL NOOBIE)

I really like these short music theory videos (including the Chinese music videos.) I often find that they go by so quickly that I need to look the subject up to fill in details. Could you give the best references for further reading, but not TOO academic and lengthy?

Great video! Love how deep into a subject you manage to go in such little time. :) But you forgot to mention why some germanic countries call B for H and Bb for B. I think I've heard that explaination a billion times and it doesn't stick. All I know is that there's this tenacious myth about some munk writing a "b" as an "h". Maybe that's for another video though

That's not far from the actual story. I'm working on a video on why we have accidentals, the answer should show up there.

also at 2:58 the aeolian has the root D ? And is it normal that the lower A is missing ? I know tetrachord was not the subject of this video sorry to ask but I have to know why XD

Actually, I’ve got a mistake in those graphics. I don’t know how I missed that. The “g” should be an “a”. Aeolian is the mode from A to A. Second, yes, D was considered the root of the scale. They considered there were only four notes to begin scales with: D E F G. However, a scale could be considered “authentic” if the root was at the bottom of the range, or “plagal” if the root was in the middle of the range. The plagal scales got the prefix “hypo” or “below”, to indicate their relationship to the authentic mode.

Great question. A few videos from now, we'll look at why we have accidentals, and that question will be answered there.
