The idea that all calories are treated the same by the body is the insane concept... Excess calories from empty foods, refined sugars and grains first and foremost, leave the body lacking a plethora of components it needs to function. This leaves the body feeling starved of nutrition no matter how much is eaten, so you begin to store the calories as fat to avoid starving to death. I disagree withe the presenter that "calories in vs calories out" is always wrong, though the evidence I see and the biochemistry Ive been exposed to makes this starvation explanation equally compelling. The same pathologies can be created via different means, it doesnt have to be either or.
@leopardpro2878
@leopardpro2878 3 жыл бұрын
@@wyattbottorff2473 I totally agree that all calories cannot be treated by the same body, they are in fact grouped into natural foods, processed foods, chemicals and additives (perhaps more) keeping it basic. So a calorie is a calorie there is no deterrent from that when it comes to natural and processed foods. However, the issue is that calories that exist within chemicals and additives are also calories (0.0001+) but as you rightly suggest that those calories are stored by the human body as either glycogen, or fat in a regular diet. A person who only consumes a chemical and additive diet in a deficit would lose weight, become malnutritional and inevitably die or develop serious health related issues. Likewise, if they were to eat in a surplus they would gain weight and again suffer from health consequences. So the issue is not whether chemicals are calories or not, the issue is how your body deals with these. Now in a regular diet, fats, sugars, additives, and chemicals are all the first port of call for the body as it requires less energy to store these, carbohydrates are the second port of call and those are broken down into sugars, and the last port of call is proteins, fibers, and so forth. Now this is the part that links in. When you are consistently eating a diet that is high in carbohydrates, chemicals, and additives, your body is storing sugars and fats from these consistently and you get a lot less nourishment from proteins, fats, fibers, and minerals; in turn, you develop an insulin resistance over time due to the fact the body SHOULD NOT be consuming chemicals and additives in large/daily amounts and thus develop type 2 diabetes. If you participate in fasting, or do ketogenic diets you will see results on reversing type 2 diabetes temporarily, if you however continue a lifestyle where you no longer consume chemicals, additives, and a large amount of carbohydrates you will remain diabetes type 2 free until you engage in previous eating/drinking habits. Keeping it short, simple, and direct to the point; calories in vs calories out for weight loss, and ketogenic diet to reverse type 2 diabetes, and do not consume chemicals and additives to lead a more healthier life (sugars, E-numbers, aspartame, sodium etc.) however, little and not often will not result in serious affects to a persons health. (please note: fasting is a form of eating disorder and SHOULD NOT be done without direct consultancy with your doctor)

Thank you Dr Fung. On January 15th this year, at 72 years old and 276 pounds I was actually crying as I was eating to kill the pain in my stomach after having just eaten two hours before. Totally discouraged after trying every different diet since I was in my twenties to no avail. Then I decided to google my situation and asked "What the HELL is the matter with me???" Google sent me to KZfaq and videos of you and Dr Berg. I watched and listened intently and determined that I was suffering from insulin resistance. I was sooooo sick of eating, I started 18/6 intermittent fasting that day. My hunger pains were gone within 2 days and within a week I was down to 20/4 . I am down 21 pounds and finally feel I'm in control of my life again thanks to you and Dr Berg for your wonderfully informative videos. I tried OMAD a couple of time but found I couldn't eat enough in one meal to get all my nutrients so am staying at 20/4. Also pre diabetic glucose numbers are becoming lower.

that is completely and totally WRONG. I can eat the most nutrient dense foods in the world and still be overweight because of overeating. That excess energy doesn't just disappear. its not like a road block where your body says 'oh this is an organic superfood....im just gonna let it go and not store it'. WRONG. A person doesn't need to 'count calories' to reduce them. But for weightloss to happen there HAS to be a deficit. There are ways to reduce calorie intake or increase calorie expenditure without calorie counting.

Alyssa, What matters is how frequently we eat. If we eat poor quality food, we will eat more often. If we eat less often, 2 meals, or one meal per day, we are less likely to snack on poor quality foods. Bottom line: The study has been done: Intermittent fasting will make people more insulin sensitive and cause more weight loss and better health (lower insulin, better blood glucose control), than eating three meals, calorie restricted, when calories are the same for both approaches. This is FACT. It appears the real problem is how frequently we eat, not how many calories we consume. Quality matters because poor quality causes more frequent eating.

Alyssia DeWolfe -Just so you know, I used to weigh 300lbs. And where I used to think like you do, it’s actually not the truth. I lost most of my weight eating more calories than I do now, maintaining my weight. There are two processes your body can create energy from food. And if your body is using glucose and glycogen for energy, then yes. You are correct. As was I. But not for the reasons we thought. It wasn’t the amount of calories. It was how much those types of foods were causing our insulin to raise. And that’s what made us fat and stay fat. If we change our body to use to fat for energy instead of glucose and glycogen, we won’t have a surplus of insulin in our bodies causing us the weight issues we’ve struggled with most of our lives. When our bodies are working in this fat burning mode, called ketosis, and you also minimize how many times you give the opportunity for you body to produce insulin (which is every time we eat) by eating less often in the day, then we can eat certain food that are high in calories more than others which are not and still lose a considerable amount of weight while becoming more healthy than we’ve ever been. If you need any help, I break it down for anyone who has questions or wants help anytime. I’m easily found on Facebook by my name Mai Vox. I sell nothing. I’m just here to help people like me.

As a type one diabetic I can attest to this. When I was eating a higher carbohydrate diet and taking more insulin I was heavier with more body fat even though I’m a naturally lean individual. The other problem with taking more insulin to account for carbs is you are bound to miscalculate because it’s almost never perfect because there are other factors that can cause your blood sugar to go low besides insulin. There were so many times when I had eaten 3 meals with multiple snacks then my blood sugar would drop because of exercise or injecting too much and my hunger was so intense that I would eat so much, give myself more insulin then go low again and the cycle would continue...

I would guess those subjects were insulin sensitive so would react well to an Ornish style diet. Stanford's A to Z study done by Chris Gardner showed that people who were insulin sensitive could do well on any of the four diets in the study, but those subjects who were insulin intolerant had markedly better results on the Atkins diet.

Check out this article by Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt (Diet Doctor) which discusses Dr. Jason Fung's response to Denise Minger's musing on high carb/low fat diets like Kempner's rice diet. As Minger noted, there is one kind of magic when carbs are reduced and the person enters ketosis which is well studied and documented. But there seems to be another kind of magic when fat is reduced to less than 10%. These ultra low fat diets (McDougall's Starch, Kempner, Pritikin, Ornish) are difficult. They are not your standard low fat diets. For example, McDougall's is Vegan with absolutely no oil. www.dietdoctor.com/in-defense-of-low-fat-denise-minger-vs-dr-fung

A Vegan can do a Low-carb diet, but it would be hard. They have to be properly prepared. Because I've seen even the fittest Vegans do low-carb diets and come off it quick. They must make sure they have enough fat sources in their diet plans to be able to cope, especially for long periods. It's easier for those that eat meat, because fat naturally comes attached to it and the dairy foods within, as well as the eggs from poultry. And these are very sufficient high-fat sources.

Thank you Dr. Fung. this was a very good and clear explanation. I recently started cutting out sugars and starches and have lost ~20 pounds in 8 weeks without feeling hungry or counting calories. I'm not on "low carb" except insofar as getting as much sugar (sucrose) and starches out of my diet tends to push me towards lower carb intake (I've had to consciously increase my non-processed carb intake - meaning more vegetables and fiber rich food - and in effect, I am "forced" into eating healthier.)

Hey Dr Fung, I am so relieved! My worst critics were me, myself, and I. "If I would just eat less and exercise more; why am I so lazy?" etc., my self talk WAS pretty destructive. I had given up on any hope of loosing weight and getting into good physical shape Currently I have a waste measurement of 52 inches, at 284lbs and 5'2, I have been so discouraged until NOW! I am on my first week of a low carb, protein in moderation, high fat Ketogenic lifestyle. I have successfully fasted in the past, so doing intermittent fasting will not be a problem. I have eliminated sugars both in processed and natural forms. For now I am avoiding alcohol and no more then one cup of morning java. This a major habit change and I realize that in three weeks a habit change will be ingrained. Here is my Question: In your talk, you state that early onset of Diabetes II can be reversed with diet and fasting, but will I always be "insulin resistant?" Looking down the road say one year, and I have lost the weight, gained muscle by working out, and am feeling more energy. Will the insulin resistance only be controlled by diet, or will my body heal itself of insulin resistance? Let us say I want to incorporate dates for energy bars, or have an occasional glass of wine (not every day, more like 2-3 times per week, one glass) Will my insulin resistance come back with those slight changes? Assuming I continue on Ketogenic lifestyle with intermittent fasting? Thank you for your input Carrie in Texas

a RIDESHARE gal................ Adipose tissue is a cause of insulin resistance. Hence if you decrease the visceral fat, you improve your sensitivity to insulin. That's the reason why physicians ask type 2 diabetics to lose weight. Because too much fat tissue was inhibiting the receptors that recognize insulin
@tanp3074
@tanp3074 6 жыл бұрын
The body like to be at homeostasis (equilibrium). So as you ingest less carbohydrate, your insulin resistant level should be better because the body starts to adapt to your life-style. That is to say you can eat bread/ pasta, drink wine again once your insulin resistant level has gone down. There is one caveat: everything should be taken in moderation. If you controlled your intake of alcohol and energy bars to an acceptable level, then everything is fine.

In the summer of last year (2018), I weighed 27½ stone (385 lbs); having been fat 20 years - Type II diabetic... I accidentally (by fortune) rediscovered cycling in July. I lost around a stone through going out for a 2 or 3 mile ride twice a week. On August 19th 2018 at around 26 stones in weight I made the decision to go for a ride every night to lose weight with a target weight of 20 stones. Since 19 August, I have failed to go out for just 7 days: 5 days in October of 2018 through having an impacted wisdom tooth removed at hospital. Then January 18th & 31st where local roads had been too icy to safely ride. (I don't want a broken arm!)... I will be going for a ride later this evening again (I now have a habit) My weight came down to around 23½ stone by late November and stayed there on the run in to Xmas. Sure, I ate a few mince pies and cakes (which really have not been in my diet to any real degree for literally years)... Why had my weight "plateaued" when I had gone out EVERY DAY progressively riding further and further ???? Over Christmas I was messing with google to ask about weight loss and I came across "the INSULIN theories". I didn't keep a diary in 2018 but I got one to start this year (2019). The last day of last year was a Monday. On 31/12/18, my weight was 23 stone 8 lbs (330 lbs)... But I decided to put the no or low carbs theories to the test. YES, I certainly am still riding my bike every day. I now ride 8½ miles during the evenings and further at the weekends - but I was doing this before Xmas when my weight stayed roughly the same for a month... But without any significant intake of carbohydrates, my weigh fell to 21 stone 3 lbs (297 lbs) by 31/1/19 - yes a loss of 33 lbs / 2½ stones !!!!! Sure, I have put some work in (about an hour an evening) cycling.... But since cutting out (or right down) the carbs, feeling hungry has 'gone away' and I am losing weight. I am lighter than I have been for more than 15 years !!! Being a T2 diabetic al this time, no-one has ever said NO carbs explaining why. Sure - no cakes, no biscuits.... But I'd been told to eat Special K or Weetabix or Shredded wheat!! I have cut out stuff like Utterly Butterly, bread, vegetable oils. I now eat bacon, baked beans, chicken, eggs. I put cream in coffee (NOT milk) and I don't fel hungry and I am losing weight. Now I finally understand the mechanism of what is going on inside of me I am dealing with it. I agree wholeheartedly with Dr Fung's (and others) observations that it's the control of insulin. In its absence, my own 'larder' is finally open for my body to use and burn off. I have a target of reaching 17 stones (238 lbs) by August this year (2019). I will keep you posted

This is fascinating. Thank you for sharing this. I would like to apply your approach with low carbs and intermittent fasting. The only thing is that I train to race on my bike up to 5 times per week doing 2.5 to 4 hours per session. If I apply fasting from 6pm to 12pm and I want to exercise from say 10am to 1pm, how do I make sure that I will have sufficient energy through my bike rides. (Most of my training rides are of low to moderate intensity with some high intensity effrots involved.) I would be grateful if you can provide some insight on a low carb diet for athletic individuals requirements. Thanks.

I am so glad I found you Dr. Fung. I have always felt deep inside my gut instincts telling me that the "calories in calories out" model didn't make sense. Our bodies don't process everything we eat the same way. It almost seems ridiculous that this belief system became so popular when it clearly doesn't add up (no pun intended ). It makes so much more sense that HORMONES NOT CALORIES determine and regulate weight gain/loss. The quality of the food, not just the quantity. What is very clear to me is that there is more money to be made by companies selling food, pharmaceuticals, diet products, etc by an increasingly obese society who can't lose weight and/or keep it off. There is very little money to be made by people knowing the truth about how true weight loss (fat loss in particular) happens and is sustainable. Obesity makes a lot of people sick, but it's also making a lot of people rich. Imagine if we all had the knowledge to heal ourselves, a lot of companies would go out of business. Thank you, Dr. Fung for caring and being compassionate enough to tell us the TRUTH about how to be healthy. Thank you for debunking what we have been told for years will work, but clearly isn't and in fact only making people fatter and more sick. Now, if only people will listen to you and apply this knowledge and go against the lies they have been taught for so long about calories, and focus on what actually regulates their hormones, then maybe we can finally get a grip on the obesity epidemic that is killing so many. P.S. There shouldn't be fat doctor's. Huge red flag.

Dr. Jason Fung, I'm a big fan of you and the great work you've done. For me, fasting (what in my opinion should be called simply "eating", and the way people usually eat should be called "over-eating" or "insulin-damaging diet" or something like that) it's not only interesting from the biological and nutrition perspective, but also from the sociological and "anarchist" perspective (Docs, Labs, Pharma and food companies trying to hide information or simply lying to us for business purposes), so it's a topic I'm fascinated, and I really appreciate what you've done. I have a personal question to ask you, if possible, of an specific situation that is happening to me. I'm 1.78mts, 74kgs, around 10% body fat, I intensely workout 5 times a week, gym and calisthenics, I'm a Vegetarian (Veggies, seeds, nuts + cheese + yogurt), I don't eat too many carbs, basically some bread on weekends and some beers or wine during the week (soon I will reduce alcohol intake looking for more improvement), and I had excellent results with intermittent fasting (I eat from 5pm to 9pm) that allows me to keep lean. But I have the following issue: I've been stuck with my muscle-mass for a while, I can't grow anymore or very little. And every time I start to eat more looking for growth, or extending the fasting window, for example having lunch after workout, let's say 1pm to 9pm instead of 5-9, I lose the "fasting" feeling in my body very quick, in fact after few days I look more fat (I'm not sure if its really body fat or simply swollen), the point is that for me it become: or keeping lean, or grow but feeling/looking fat. From the fasting perspective, what would be your opinion or suggestion. Thank you very much. Regards from Switzerland!
