In this video I explain how disc detainer locks work and how to pick them.
I struggled a lot trying to figure out how to open disc detainer locks, and I am happy to share the mistakes I've made because maybe you're struggling with the same issues I was.

Excellent vid. I plan on getting into DD's someday, though strictly for hobby= as you almost never see them used in America. Also, as a fun field of study= Wafer Locks. They're literally everywhere and they have been around for ages and they are a very interesting topic. Disassembling them and reassembling them is very interesting too. Would love to see a comprehensive video series on those. Also= TUBULAR Locks. So little has been devoted to them and they are such a fascinating field. I don't fell like they have even had tools made for them. I mean, they have impressioners but those don't work very well. Would love to see better tensioning tools for them and a pick created specifically to push down the pins. You think, 'Oh, I'll just grab anything' but a lot of tub's have a rim over the pins which makes accessing them super difficult. Like even with a .015's it's hard to insert. The tool should also have a cup to go over each pin, it'd make it easier. (Kind of like Noobs' Monkey Paw but not bent). Would also love to see a demo of the ACE brand impressioner but it's like 400$ lol and not sure if they have different heads for all the different types. 7 pin/ 7 pin offset/ 8 pin/ 10 pin. They're used on tons of things but it hasn't been thoroughly vetted as far as I'm concerned. Anywho, thanks for your efforts. (Gonna get me a silver bullet one of these days, lol.)

Rarely see pintumblers outside of cheap bicycles in the nordics. You're not getting burglary insurance payouts if your lock isn't atleast as secure as the mid model abloy DD locks. Very nearly all residences have DDs and some even have DD + electronics both required. Never understood the desire to save a meaningless amount of money by going with a cheap crappy pin tumbler. A single time someone steals from you it'll be multiples in excess of the pricegap even between a 15$ and a 300$ Abloy Protec etc.

Thanks! It was an effort to put it together, but it was a lot of fun to make the model, and like I said in the video I was genuinely frustrated at the beginning trying to pick DD locks and kinda felt stupid for not being able to pick them… I also noticed how many people seem to have bought a sparrows DD pick, but not too many DD pick posts/videos, and I was wondering if I was the only one struggling with it.

Brilliant tutorial Jon and perfectly timed for me! I’ve just bought a Sparrows DD pick and 1 lock off eBay and spent about 4 hours without any success picking it. I sussed out problem points 1 and 2 myself in the trial and error process but never twigged that just because I got tension off disk 1 it might not be a front tension lock. It might just be me being rubbish at this but I’ll revisit my lock with this newly discovered knowledge with a glimmer of hope once more. Thank you

WOW, nice video really amazing that you put in the effort and did a 3D-model. Nicely done! ABUS X-Plus cores are always front tensioning, they give very good feedback and a lot of people use them in their bike locks you can get lucky from time to time to score one with a lost/broken key (got 2 like this for 1€ each). Obstacles on these are only: False gates, slim spacers (needed to modify the sparrows picking tip a little) and this disc lock thingy before you start (easy to overcome though)

Hey Jon, nice video. For those looking to get into DD picking there are a few things I would recommend. First, find a lock that has been picked a lot and learn about it before you pick it, it's really helpful to draw from specific, collective knowledge. Second, using learning aids can really help, I've used combinations of cutaways and spacers to get better feedback, particularly for new or homemade tools. There are a few models of spacers I have made in the discord which reduce the total discs in the lock so you can get a feel for traversing the lock with better feedback. Cutaways for abloy locks can be done easily (particularly for the classic) which help to validate that what you feel is being translated to the lock correctly. Finally, just a small nitpick, the spacers in DD locks are reasonably important to the picking process. You need to be able to orient your pick in the next disc, that would be significantly more difficult without spacers. For that reason, the pick tip cannot be thicker than the spacers, thus they cannot be neglected in a deep dive on DD locks.
@JonLock
@JonLock 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely true. I actually had a version where I talked about spacers and edited it out because it interrupted the flow of what I was trying to explain. I’m sure there would have been a way to get it in without confusing everyone, but I just didn’t find the right words, so I cut it out. I was mostly focused on the theory of picking it, and not 100% everything about DDs… but there is a whole topic about navigating your pick through the lock that I couldn’t find a good way to cover in this video.

Decent explanations, nice graphics, however, here are a couple of things that may help. 1. File the tips of the turning head a little longer. On many locks, you may have a thick spinner to get past before you reach disc 1. Take a look at the turning tip on LPL's pick. LONG fork on that thing, easily filled into shape, just do it gradually, and only by hand. A dremel will heat the metal and destroy the temper, even if you manage to not over grind the turning tip. Also, you may have to shape the picking tip a little to get past the warding of some DD locks. Try not to take off more than you need to. 2. rather than trying to 3d print something if you don't have facilities, a small washer or two will also do quite nicely to help you maintain alignment of your pick tip. 3. The shaft of the turning tip is square, so you can rotate the turning tip 90º, to make your tensioning easier, depending on the orientation of the lock. 4. False gates. Many disc detainer locks have false gates on the discs and will require a lot more work to find the true gates. However, much of the principles are the same, rotating the binding disc until you find a gate, and moving on to the next binding disc. It may not, and probably will not be a linear process as you go through the stack of discs. Once they are in gates of any sort, then you will have to keep searching for the true gates. 5. Do not get discouraged, do not quit, you can do this. It may take a long time at first, but you will get it if you keep trying. If you don't, you will never get through them. Putting them down and waiting for a day when you feel like it gets you no closer to getting them open. Trying, getting frustrated to hell, putting them down for a bit to cool off then coming back to them DOES get you closer to open ing them. Disc Detainer locks are NOT easy to open, and they are not supposed to be. I have ones I still have yet to get an open, and have been trying for years. My first disc detainer locks were kryptonites, because I could find nothing else on hand, all center tensioning, and not easy, but through determination, I got most of them open, eventually, even designed my own disc detainer pick, which you can check out my tutorial vid on. I hope these tips help.

I really don't fully understand. Could you type out how to pick a rear zero cut disc detainer lock with a front disc tensioning disc pick in basic steps.
@JonLock
@JonLock Жыл бұрын
You tension the front disc. You hopefully are able to pick the rest of the discs (it’s harder to detect the set, since the front disc is pushing out the sidebar). Then you use the picking tip to tension the last disc. With the last disc under tension you counter rotate the front disc using the top tensioner. If all of the other discs are set correctly the front disc will fall into its gate and the lock will open.
