The USMNT has struggled to get a signature win, as stated by Jesse Marsch himself, so what is missing?
Is it a mentality issue? Is it Gregg Berhalter? Are the USMNT players the problem?
Let's discuss.

Loved hearing an actual coach talk to a level of what you can observe about the USMNT’s tactics and how relatively easy it is to find a way to beat and/or hold them. The Dutch coach must’ve really felt like it was child’s play seeing that Berhalter made no effective adjustments in the second half.

Tac: Now let me ask a question I can frame so I can get my agenda into the answer. I already know this will continue to happen throughout this conversation and I am literally 15 minutes into this. @@coletripp4814I don't see it that way, I appreciate that the guest gave his honest opinion on why Berhalter would play Reyna that way from Berhalter's perspective while also saying how he felt he saw Reyna playing as a 10 - when Tac moved on it was where he mentioned earlier he was going to segue way into when talking about the episode dynamic. So I think you went into this with your own bias yourself and were confirming it when you watched it.

@@coletripp4814 and furthermore the comment you replied to didn't say anything about how the guest was dogging Berhalter and screaming "truth" rather that he was providing insightful commentary, which he was - this is someone that has gone against the USMNT providing first hand experience and the comment was merely pointing out that it's a good perspective that we don't often get from pundits and media which again is very true - it had nothing to do with the interviewer really so your gripes about are honestly just asinine.

This is such an awesome interview. It's like, from a military perspective, watching a battle and armchair general debating about what happened in the battle, to going to a divisional or corps commander and what he actually saw through the smoke and dust. I love that this interview is from that "on the ground" perspective and not just fans debating amongst themselves the shoulda woulda couldas.

Dismal results? Berhalter is the winningest coach in USMNT history over a similar period. He won the Nation's League and the Gold Cup in the same year with two different teams. He qualified for the WC after the disappointment of 2018 and made it out of group to finish 14th in the tournament despite the youngest starting lineup in the World Cup and in US world cup history. He's literally done everything he was supposed to do. He has the USA back in form and ranked in the top 20 in the world. This is not dismal results. Dismal results was the 2015 Gold Cup and the start of the 2018 qualifying run from a coach that should have been fired back in 2013.

@@coletripp4814then why did they not spend more time interviewing and throughly considering the candidates they had beside berhalter? Why don’t they have a soccer development program to replace the one that created some of these players or a project to replace it? The USSF didn’t develop pulisic, it was Dortmund that did same with gio. Why do they not invest into making soccer more accessible and trying to get scouts that will look for new talented players we are missing out on? They haven’t done any work we know of to push the USA to the next level, and they don’t have any projects to develop talents that will play in the top leagues or even a project to plan how the USA will become more successful at major respected international tournaments. We had a coach that couldn’t beat Trinidad and Tobago away twice and we were punished with ridicule and disappointment for it. How many times will the USA sports fans have to watch their national team fail like we always do at major tournaments before they give up on watching the USMNT?

Greg takes 85% of the blame. The only credit I give to him is getting commitments from dual nats. The system he has us running, if you even want to call it a system, is a joke, and for me, the number 1 thing will always be, game management. The coaches ability to provide instruction too turn around the performance of the team, and or being able to manage a game you are already winning too see it out, and substitutions. Greg may be a good guy, he may even somehow motivate these players, but he continues to fail when it comes to game time. Only recently when he’s started picking out better rosters has his subs improved, imo. Thanks for the quality content as usual tac
@megamonster1234
@megamonster1234 6 ай бұрын
I wouldn't even give him the dual nat thing. Most of those decisions were made because of the players' own personal situation. He was just there at the right place and right time. Just like how Hudson was there at the right place and right time with Balogun, who switched because he was too impatient for England. Dest said he thought the Netherlands called too late, Tillman was never good enough for Germany, Zendejas was alienated by the Mexican FMF. Need I say more? Musah was the only one that was truly up in the air but he wasn't highly coveted by England either and England doesn't like calling up players outside of England unless you're Bellingham. Giving GGG credit for any of these players is like giving the Norway coach credit for Erling choosing Norway over England.

If Greg has to be perfect at everything he does with this team then these players aren't what we think they are. Gareth Southgate came out and said that England dropped the ball on Musah, that they were disappointed to have lost out on him, so I think his case was also less about waiting for England. At 45 min you nail it. Ggg is forcing a system that we dont have the players for. The question can be asked a lot of ways but Perez doesn't see this is as a pure or even primarily Berhalter issue. He kept coming back to player execution and skill set. The section on Yedlin was particularly insightful. They assessed Yedlin and game planned to force Yedlin into decisions that he couldn't execute consistently. Some people might blame Berhalter for that but it's also significantly a Yedlin talent issue.
@karlpk3907
@karlpk3907 6 ай бұрын
Gerson thinks like a manager, in that you need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the opposite team's personnel and and yours as well. Then deploy players, and provide individualized instructions, so you maximize the weaknesses of the opponent and minimize yours. Put your players into position to succeeds and theirs to fail. Formations are just one part of that. And then, as the game is being played are those specific player matchups and tactical moves working or not? If not, do you know beforehand what adjustments you will make. In addition you have to adjust for the venue, the quality of the pitch, and weather. It's a big big job and you have to plan thoroughly.

Instead of saying "El Salvador has worse players than the USMNT" you should say "I think you and I can both agree that the USMNT have players of a higher club pedigree than El Salvador. Therefore don't you think it should be expected that the USMNT with all due respect to El Salvador should be playing for the win even in away games?" Sounds more professional and nuanced. No. The ceiling of an national team is defined by its performance of its individual players at the club level. The belief that we are performing below our level of talent was based on expectations formed when these players were young and with big programs and were hyped to have glorious futures in Europe. But none of our players have performed consistently and at a high level or often at any level at all in Europe since then. The entire roster is flopping compared to the hype and expectations put on them, and it's just lots easier to say, "I wasn't wrong. I didn't let myself get taken in by the hype. We are as good as anyone in the world. If only I was the coach we'd beat everyone." List any of the players you want and go back a few years and listen to what the youtube channels were saying about them and how Berhalter was the problem. Matthew Hoppe for example. Remember when he was going to be the next big thing after 5 goals in Bundesliga? Where is he now? Where is your boostering and bunkering for him now? Where are you complaints that Berhalter is being totally unfair to him now? Remember when everyone was saying how Chris Richards was going to be Bayern Munich's CB of the future? Do you remember how many times we were told how much faith Bayern had in him? Then he went to Crystal Palace where he now can't get off the bench. Remember Gio Reyna? He was hyped as the best young player in the world. He was going to be the next big thing. Well, he can't get off the bench for Dortmund. His player valuation has slipped from top 5 in his age group and top 25 in his position to 24th in his age group. And if he doesn't start playing soon, it will go lower. And this isn't just something happening with Gio. The roster has been shedding transfer market value for years, and not because they are underperforming for Berhalter but because they are underperforming for their club. What about Brendan Aaronson the "Medford Messi"? How many situations has he flopped out of now? Remember when Tim Weah was going to play for PSV? How many situations has he flopped out of now? He's not even considered a prospect at winger anymore. Or remember Sergino Dest? Sure, he's playing for PSG now and looks OK, but at one time we were being told he was a top 5 fullback in the world and the future of Barca. He's crashed down several levels from that sort of hype. Tyler Adams? Josh Sergent? Neither can get their career actually going. The number of injury prone players we have is astounding but not unexpected given the relatively small relatively unathletic player pool. The less said about the state of the GK pool the better. We've got a few players that are doing OK. McKinney is doing OK for Juventus. Pulsic is doing OK for AC Milan when he can stay healthy, but he's gone from being a 60 million dollar player to a 25 million dollar player. Robinson at Fulham might be the most in form player we have right now, as Tim Ream is finally starting to show his age after last year's entirely unexpected career year. We have some talent, but it's not the talent level of a top 10 program in the world so expecting any coach to make this squad look top 10 is ridiculous. Add up the starters we have in the big 5 every week. Add up the minutes played we have in the big 5 every week. Add up the wins we earn in the big 5 every week. Add up the goals scored. You'll find that we rank something like 25th or 26th in the world in those categories, and that we need 3 or 5 times as many players to match top programs. We don't have players ranked in the top 25 in their position, much less any that are in the top 5. You want to be a top 10 program you need a whole roster of players who are stars, who are captains, who are the best player on their team, who are ranked in the top 25 in their position in the world. We don't have that. We just don't.

Nah. Blaming the players for everything doesn't explain why this team struggles against vastly inferior opponents. Or why this team has never pulled off a signature win under Gregg as previous coaches did. If the coach is adding nothing and it's all on the players, then the coach is worthless and needs to be replaced.

@@sparkplugs13 If no one thinks we are a top 10 team or have a top 10 talent, why is the expected minimum result for the USA to finish in the top eight at the world cup? @celebrim1

@@Xar22297 The job of an international coach is to make sure that the team comes as close to fulfilling the promise of the individual talent as possible. If you think that our talent is a top 10 team in the world, then sure we haven't done that and it's got to then be on the coach. But if you think that objectively, by the numbers, looking at what the club players are actually doing, that we ought to be like 20th to 25th in the world, then well things make a lot more sense. The answer to your question about why we struggle sometimes against a 60th ranked or 80th ranked team on the road is well, we are probably only a 25th ranked team and the gap between 20 and 60 is smaller than the gap between 20 and 8. The answer to the question of why we don't beat teams "better than us" is that if we are only as talented as the 20th or 25th ranked team in the world, is that those teams are a lot better than us and so winning would be a big upset. We also don't play those teams very much, so we don't get the opportunity to do so. And that is a lot more logical and objective answer than "really we could be a top 10 team but the coach is holding us back". That successfully explains all the observations in a way that "it's the coach" doesn't. In fact if you actually objectively look at our talent you realize we aren't underperforming; we are overperforming. As for signature wins, the USMNT hasn't had a signature win since 2009 when we beat Spain. Bradley was fired without cause, as his successor had worse Gold Cup performances than he did. The problem with casual fans is that they excited when we win against a top program in a friendly, without considering that it was a late comeback, after making six subs, against a program that literally couldn't care less about the outcome of the friendly because they aren't trying to prove something.

22:41 Here's my thing, I do like soccer as a sport but I love the traditional sports more. Soccer is late to the game and developed in other countries when there was significant competition for athletes. Now soccer is trying to break into a world where the American sports culture is significantly different than the rest of the world. I want our US team to be the best it can be, but to do that you have to find a way to convince the best athletes to become skilled players. Basketball does that, football does that, Baseball in a lot of ways does that. But soccer doesn't, because you can put the best athlete at the top and their skill doesn't matter. Maybe that's a bad take, but I think to fix that problem you need to find a way to convince kids that their skill matters.

@@ronniethomas8780 There were definitely better options available than Berhalter, and if you want a good coach you don't wait for coaches to apply, you single out the ones who's tactics fit your best players strengths (unlike Berhalters possession based style) and invite them for an interview, if you want a recent example, that's how Brazil got Ancelotti. And when it comes to the potential of these players, I've seen enough "golden generations" from all kinds of countries to know that most of these generations and talents never get close to reaching their potential, the US has some promising talents but only very few of them will probably become elite players unless they can start to produce a much bigger amount of talents year after year like top nations. Yes this generation is promising but alot of USMNT fans put unrealistic expectations on them, they're a good team but still lack quality and especially depth in alot of positions. So I'm not sure if the quality of the players will be enough to compensate for Gregg's shortcomings so far it's not enough. The US needs to improve in all areas if they wanna catch up to the top nations but especially on the coach position, look how easily Van Gaal exploited the US weaknesses, he knew Dest and Robinson play very high up the pitch in Gregg's system which leaves them vulnerable to counter attacks over the flanks where he knew the US players often don't pick up their runners when crosses come in during counter attack situations and that's how they scored at least 2 of their 3 goals (I can't remember the 3rd goal rn) and the US team had that problem long before the world cup but if your coach can't find solutions to cover for your teams weaknesses he'll get outplayed like that as soon as the US has to face a good opponent with a good coach, even if your players are much better in a few years, I don't think they'll be on the level to win against elite, well organised teams while being outcoached, for that you'd need worldclass players on most positios and even then it's not a given, I've seen many teams that were worldclass on paper but sucked on the pitch because of a bad coach. My experience after almost 3 decades of watching football tells me, if the US want to compete with the best they'll need more quality and depth on the pitch but also a much much better coach it's almost impossible if you don't have both.

You can easily criticize. The problem with Greg's possession based soccer is that it's not penetrative. It relies on CBs giving wide balls to wingers, followed by an overlapping run from a fullback, who then puts in a hopeful cross. Statistically this is one of the worst ways to create offenses, and it is also prone to counterattacks, as the fullbacks leave gaps for teams to exploit. When most of your possession comes from CBs who are not an attacking threat, you're not going to score many goals. Just because it's "possession based" doesn't make it good. Possession without purpose is meaningless. "Tactically Naive" as Louis van Gaal put it.

To add to this is the if I could visualize it based off what you said, the issues is all the attack is in the flanks and it means it’s very easy to counterattack because the final third of the attack is coming from the edges of pitches and there is no much from the middle and the opposing side quickly can adjust to this as a result
