My five y/o daughter starts school today and I asked her, if there was anything in particular that she would like to learn and she said she wanted to know how horses could survive on grass? I actually always wanted to know that myself lol... now all I have to do is paraphrase everything to her and it'll make sense. Thanks for making this video.

we can't eat grass because we took the herbivore upgrade path but didn't get "Rear Gut Fermenter" because we took "Omnivore" and the two are exclusive. Also in the early game we made the mistake of not picking up "cellulase" when we had the chance because we jumped the gun and changed our class to "Vertebrate" too soon.

Love how they mentioned cows make short chain fatty acids, which is actually what makes up most of their calories. Also non-rumenants aka hind gut fermenting herbivores use their caecum for cellulose digestion. In humans it's atrophied to the appendix though, but is still a good reservoir for bacteria for reseeding after infections or antibiotics.

As a farmhand I confirm this! I work with dairy cattle and with pigs! If the grass is to short cut it is bad for the chambers in the stomack. If the grass is to long the stomacks cant process it enough. I dont have the english words for it but it is bad for the chambers her to. If they eat only straw they can not process it in what so ever so they die of starvation. Optimum is about 10 cm or 4 inches long grass!

Here's my question: if it were possible for us to digest the grass properly, how nutritious would it be? How much would a human need to eat to satisfy, let's say a 2,000 calorie/day requirement? Also, does it provide any vitamins/minerals? (possible solution to eating grass would be to grow a suitable organ for the proper cellulase producing microbes to thrive in, inserting it above the stomach)

@lupuscorvus841

Well, considering the fact that our stomachs don't have the enzymes to digest cellulose AND the fact that humans have a simple digestive tract which most closely resembles that of Carnivores, I'd have to say that is complete and utter bullshit. There's also the fact that our bodies are highly dependent on saturated fats for many functions in the body (which mainly come from animal sources) as well as proteins. The protein synthesis that our bodies undergo are mostly compatible with animal proteins as those are the most easily digested and absorbed by the body. Now, if you wanted to argue that the chemicals and hormones that they pump into our meat sources are terrible for you, then I'd agree with you vehemently. I also think animals should be raised in a healthier manner than spending their entire existence cooped up in some industrialized building living off of nothing but unhealthy grains and formula. But ultimately, eating meat is better for you than living entirely off of vegetation as most of the nutrients in plants cannot be absorbed by the body again, due to our bodies' inability to break down cellulose.
@lazsatori
@lazsatori 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your response and passion. Everything we need can be gotten from nuts and seeds far better than animal sources. The issue is not about cellulose, that is fiber to us, and there are plenty of easy tricks to exposing the food. Cellulose is not a factor in digesting nuts and seeds, which has your saturated fats too! Yes, the toxins from the meat are terrible, but the microbe and parasite risk is far worse. And to the sensitive individual, the one who can perceive life as consciousness, the vibe is poor. Yes, Poor. Death consciousness is furtive and negative. Where living food awakens and quickens the spirit and mind..

Cows don't have a 4 chamber stomach, they have 4 separate stomachs. Also food goes into the ruman first, is then brought up as cud, rechewed, swallowed and sent into either the ruman or reticulum, then into the omasum, and lastly to the abomasum (which is a true stomach like ours).

You can just add the cellulase enzyme and a good ph to ground up grass, wood chips, and/or paper. Then after its done you can eat the "wood sugar", maybe, with yeast bacteria to turn some of the sugar to alcohol.

Tell that to my stake I just ate, we are not deers! Ask any doctor we are omnivores eating meat is part of our diet. It's not healthy to eat plants only or viable, the best way is to eat both animal products and plants. Not only that vegan only diet is bad for the environment. Save the earth, eat some meat!
@RedStefan
@RedStefan 8 жыл бұрын
Dude I read studies that confirm my claims, go and tell the inuit to stop eating meat. Why you vegans so ignorant, I agree we should eat more veggies, but eating only vegetables is not sustainable or healthy for us. The best diet is a balanced one, like Mediterranean diet or Japanese diet with a lot of oily fish. We need those animal fats and proteins. Yes you can survive on plants only, but you can't go full throttle on grass only.

It's not good for you to just eat vegetables and it's not good for you to just eat meat. What a surprise, just look at your teeth and it all makes perfect sense. Cows eat grass, humans eat cows and cats eat humans. Very simple!

+Crispy Slick Animal products are never healthy? If animal products were unhealthy we wouldn't even be here because our ancestors ate meat regularly for convenient energy and nutrients. A good masticating juicer will crush the cell walls to release the non-cellulose nutrients contained within. People do this with wheat and barley grasses all the time Of course, they use younger, more tender leaf material than what one finds in the fields, but there is a machine to cut the cellulose out of the equation if you are looking for whatever else that leaf may have to offer.

In Vietnam, they eat bamboo. Not kidding. Bamboo is a type of grass, unless I'm mistaken. I also had it often while I was there for three months, it tastes exactly like you'd expect, like wood...but edible wood, easily the weirdest thing I've ever eaten. How does bamboo differ from regular grasses? I mean, clearly there's something there that animals other than ruminants like pandas and Vietnamese people and myself can eat otherwise we'd all have some serious issues. I mean, yeah them pandas got issues but they're still here for now.

The thing is that Humans are actually omnivores: we have some plant digestion features which carnivores lack. We aren't specialized herbivores but we can process starch and gluten unlike carnivores. Indeed, most humans can live without meat, It doesn't mean we require grass and bark.

Actually grass is the main source of food in the world. All grains are types of grass, so wheat, corn, rice, bamboo, canesugar, barley, and many others are all grass.
@naverilllang
@naverilllang 8 жыл бұрын
we eat the grass seed, or grain. cane needs to be processed to refine sugar, and is too woody to eat straight up. bamboo stems can only be harvested the day that they sprout, and must be boiled to be edible, and even then only the inside can be eaten. otherwise, it's far too woody. so yes, grass is very important to us, but i think he was talking about why we can't eat grass from a lawn.

i also feel the need to add that even when people make wheatgrass shots the grass goes through a special squeezer and out comes a long coil of the fibery stuff that would hold the cellulose. Even health nuts who eat wheatgrass shots don't eat the cellulose in grass. I've seen them prepared.
