On the other hand... imagine if the Canucks signed Gretzky. John McCaw does not replace Quinn with Keenan - Gretzky's performance almost certainly will raise the team standings, and remove any excuse to get rid of Quinn. Keenan does not arrive to destroy the roster. Arthur Griffiths probably manages to retain his depleted ownership stake in the team, earn a ring. Gretzky motivates the talented, young, and overpaid team to perform. His leadership and work ethic brought the most out of his teammates. Bure and Mogilny may even emerge as 50-in-50 threats. Canucks win first Cup in 1999 - they don't beat a more well-rounded and motivated Wings team in 1997 or 98. One coached by the great Bowmann. They sign Rob Blake in free agency that offseason, and both Bure and Mogilny pick up 50-in-50 seasons. After this, the team could go in any direction - they might trade Bure or Mogilny or try to keep them both. Either way, it's not inconceivable to see Vancouver get a second ring,

Canucks fan here. Well, actually, former fan. I can't take any more riots and I can't afford $500 seats. Lived in Vancouver most of my life, born and raised here, and just feel like the Canucks are always expected to lose. So I got used to that attitude. When Messier came along, it felt like we were cuckolding to New York after being beaten in '94. It was a weird thing. But I am actually a Mark fan. I always loved the Oilers, especially the Dream Team from the 80s. I found it odd to see him in a Rangers jersey to be honest. But coming to Vancouver after being on the ride his was on in NY, seemed like he married down. We didn't really want him here, but at the same time, it was bizarre to have such a player with us. Vancouver's always been that team where we brought our guys up from their early years and we watched them grow into great players... who would get traded. I will always regard Mark as an Oiler. He might have been a winner and a captain in NY, but it was for mostly pomp. He got used to that, and we saw that when he came to Vancouver. Personally I'd take a losing team with Trevor than any winning team with Mark. I know it sounds weird, but I enjoy the game for the love of the game. If the Cup happens, fine. If not, fine. We fans don't really expect it anymore anyway.

Bure, Linden, Kirk, Gino... if I was a fan back then I probably would of been smashing my head into the wall. Truly, the dark ages of the vancouver canucks. It seems like management has constantly been an issue in Vancouver, with respect to Pat Quinn it seems like he absolutely bent over backwards for messier and it was his own poison (please correct me if I'm wrong)- we've always given guys too long and they destroy anything good we get going. I mean for Christ sake I still don't understand why they fired Gillis and Alain Vignault... just for the sake of "moving on", they were 2 of the best dudes to ever be in Vancouver... and we just replaced them with dudes who wrecked our team inside out. If Patrik Allvin, Tochhet and Jim Rutherford have proved anything so far, it's how crucial management and coaching is- and how it doesn't take 3 or more years to see when guys have it figured out.... regardless of whatever stage your team is at. Jim benning is another prime example of a guy who had WAY too long to prove himself as a GM- and ruined us for years in the process.

I read Messier's memoir, where he said until 1994, every New York Rangers season ended with intense anger. Didn't matter that you got close three times, Rangers fans would never tolerate anything less than a Cup. He might as well have been talking about the Vancouver Canucks. People here are beyond angry, it's not a surprise they smashed the city to pieces TWICE. But to shoot straight, the Canucks had no business pushing the Rangers to seven games, falling short by just one goal. Simply making the Finals that year was more than impressive, considering the competition. Considering all they been through until then (and now), they were justified to want that Cup in 1994. Their 2011 run, was completely different. This time, they were in the position of the 1994 Rangers, heavily favoured, in position to wipe out a generation-long Cup drought (they were merely a 24-year old franchise in 1994, 40 in 2011), and topping it all off, they hosted the Olympics, and their star player was a gold-medal Olympic hero, poised to make history as the first goaltender to join the Triple Gold Club and punch a picket to the HHOF. Anything less than a Cup was absolute failure. Talk about New York's sufferings. well at least they lived to see victories from the Yankees, Knicks, Giants, and ahem, Islanders. Boston (Red Sox), well at least they had seen Celtics, Patriots, and Bruins. Vancouver, well, they only have the Canucks who won nothing.

I dislike Messier but I wonder why there's more focus on him than Keenan. Messier was there longer and made more money, so there's that, but Keenan really set the bad tone in the dressing room and team. Messier was probably partly responsible as he was Captain and he didn't say anything. However, after Keenan left, Messier refused to be traded because he felt there was a job that needed to be done. Also, Markus really credits Messier for his leadership and looking after him. Keenan, even though he made some trades that helped, they helped *in spite* of him. There would have been no West Coast Express if Keenan was still coach because he would likely have traded Naslund. Keenan had no redeeming qualities when he was here. After Messier's initial deplorable season where he seemed to let the team sink so he can mold the team in his image (what kind of leadership is that) he at least worked with the new group after Keenan was gone. He even won the Cyclone Taylor award. Still, I think if Messier wants his unpopularity in this city to soften somewhat (and he may not care), I would say he would need to do the following as a start: * All the Canucks who praise him (including Burke and Naslund) should say so again and tell stories to give a more complete image. To be more believable, they should concede there is some legitimate criticism of his time there including his first year. * He should return the $6million he got from the Canucks. Part of that should go to Burke because the previous ownership screwed him even though he saved the franchise and the remaining should go to Canuck place or one of Sedins charities. Maybe even Linden if he has one. * Apologize for not playing better. Even Krutov apologized in 2005. * Re-iterate that he would not have taken the captaincy in hindsight. * Apologize for not standing up for his team, including Linden against Keenan. * Admit that it was a mistake to hire Keenan. He can dress it up however he wants (wrong team, wrong time, etc) but he should realize that the Rangers only got Gretzky because Keenan and Jack Quinn figured out how to push him away from St. Louis. He should've realized then, especially if he had chats with Gretzky, that Keenan was no longer good. * Apologize to the fans for all the general chaos during those years, especially his first year with Keenan.

Wow !! That’s quite a rap sheet you have compiled against Messier. However , judging from all other accounts that I’ve read about him , it certainly seems well deserved. He comes across as a selfish, greedy and disingenuous man who doesn’t live up to the mythology that’s been created for him. It has become a tired act that is equally disappointing.

Messier's career should have ended pre-maturely with severe injury.

Vancouver is not a place for Mark Messier this is jealous because the Rangers beat them in 1994

Overrated leader who benefitted from the teams he was surrounded by. Also dirty beyond belief - King of the Butt-End. He took his 18m after abandoning a young core that needed a leader. Yzerman and Beliveau set the standard, yet Mr. Potato Chip is the face of leadership? Please.

This tainted Messier's career. Hard time calling this guy "the greatest leader in sports." As they did before this s*** show.

The Canucks had the Sedines and never got to the highest level. Now, they are ripping the Oilers because they have the two best players in the world. Sorry, nuks, your players are not Canadian anyway.

Sounds weird to me that Messier is said to be responsible for the coach change and Linden trade. He was a player not a GM. Didn’t play that poorly either - being 37 and averaging 50 pts per season is better than you’d expect
@DeathZephlyn4 жыл бұрын
See, Messier had Mike Keenan hired. Messier basically had Pat Quinn (General Manager) fired, as well as Tom Reny (Head Coach). Keenan took over for both head coach and GM. So yeah.. Messier and his butt buddy Keenan basically destroyed the team from the inside. Taking the cup from the Canucks in 94 wasn't enough for the douchebag.
@pahulgill61144 жыл бұрын
Actually Mike Keenan literally admitted it was Messier’s decision to trade those guys because he didn’t like their presence in the locker room and they rubbed him the wrong way. Messier wanted to play god in Vancouver

@@DeathZephlyn Because Linden, Odjick, Babych, and McLean never won anything and weren't ever gonna take the Canucks to the promised land. They already peaked in 1994, and by 1997, Mark Messier, Pavel Bure, Alexander Mogilny and even Cliff Ronning were much better than those heart and soul guys who couldn't lead effectively like Messier did for the Oilers and Rangers.
@broadstreet21 Жыл бұрын
@@FilipoSooaUlufale That didn't matter. Mess was always going to be the enemy. Linden was going down a hero or a martyr. The fact Mess didn't win, it justified the hate. But if they won a Cup with him, fans still would have not forgiven the Linden trade. This was his team.

Let's go Brandon! Canucks have made several mistakes that could have led to a Cup: 1. They traded Cam Neely and a 1987 thrid-overall pick - with which I guarantee they would have drafted Joe Sakic. 2. They traded Doug Lidster to the Rangers just to protect their backup goaltender from the expansion draft. 3. They failed to sign Wayne Gretzky, who could have joined a team with Bure, Mogilny, Naslund, just to name a few... 4. They didn't play Ballard in 2011, dropping him in the depth chart, even calling up a minor leaguer in Game 7 when Ballard was available!
@AdmirDemondo2 күн бұрын
Ballard was hit and miss not really a bad decision

Messiah jersey shouldn't be up in the rafters. It was the worst times for the canucks and he was the main cause of a lot of problems Including the loss of Pavel.

Messier stayed in an interview that he asked the family before he chose to wear number 11 and they said yes. Back then the media was full of false claims. That’s what happened back then.

@nba_fanboy_04254 жыл бұрын
Should have worn a different number, out of respect. Even if his family have permission or not. Aside from that, Messier was a heck of a player.
@FilipoSooaUlufale3 жыл бұрын
Let's be real here, Trevor Linden couldn't carry the Canucks anywhere close to the Stanley Cup Finals after 1994. If he had been a better leader than a choke artist leader, there would've been no need to sign Messier to help weed out the country clubhouse core set in their own ways and won't do the Mark Messier/Mike Keenan way.
@broadstreet21 Жыл бұрын
That's why they tried to get Gretzky. He could have carried them to the finals, without rifting the locker room.
@AdmirDemondo2 күн бұрын

They mostly struggled since then. Keenan took over one of the leagues most young talented them. He traded for old veterans and was lucky enough to win a cup but destroyed rangers future in the process. Let's compare to the Devils, red Wings, avalanche being power houses for 20+ years.
