The whole issue w climate science is that is has been heavily politicized since the 1990s w the IPCC as structural arbitor. The idea that maybe, possibly, the natural variability has been downplayed (by disgarding certain factors) and human Co2 emissions upplayed using flawed recalibration techniques and modelling is never taken seriously. Then there is the whole funding issue which corrupts outcomes. So, what are the changes the IPCC will conclude in a future report that things are not nearly as dramatic as previously thought? The answer is zero. Then there are actors who really believe things are even more dire. They wont even accept the IPCC's conclusions. And what does the media do? Hyping up alarm. Constantly.

Not the case at all. Tens of millions have taken actions. Seek and yee shall find plenty of evidence of communities and citizens working on this problem. In addition claiming it's too complicated is just not true. The effect has been known for 200 years. Experiments in 1850's proved that co2 traps infrared heat. They've been tested countless times. There's no need for an individual not interested in the science to become physicists. It only takes an open mind! Let a couple pieces of information loose in your head and your brain will sort it out. Piece #1 is my previous sentence. It's been known and repeatedly tested that greenhouse gases trap infrared heat. It's also known that when you burn a six pound gallon of gasoline you create nineteen pounds of co2. Lastly we know to a high degree of accuracy how much of these gases are added to our shared atmosphere annually. Today it's 51 billion tons and rising every year. Again it's not difficult to understand that adding this massive quantity to the atmosphere cannot continue.

This gentleman is energy blind as is the interviewer. Zero recognition that fossil fuels, not human genius, underlies EVERYTHING in our world of 8 billion precious humans. GDP is 98% correlated with fossil fuels and materials are 100% correlated. Convert fossil fuels energy into oil equivalent energy and find we're going through 100 billion barrels of fossil fuels energy annually. Surely you understand how Earth's systems made the fossil fuels? Mostly one and done events over deep time. Born and raised in Pittsburgh with relatives in Oil City Pa. Nearby is the first commercial well drilled in 1859 by Colonel Drake. The drill bit was wooden, the oil only sixty feet below. The Rockefeller empire in Cleveland used this oil for his first refinery. Pennsylvania grade crude was highest quality available. Earth had cooked it perfectly. People thought it would flow forever. Today it's all gone. Fracking is scraping the remaining hydrocarbons from the wells. North Sea crude, a gift to UK was wasted on enriching the already wealthy. It to is gone. Find dozens of similar pools of oil that are now empty. Visit US energy agency and discover that fracked wells deplete much faster than oil wells. That the decline rate is accelerating. Wipe away your historical ignorance and remember that by 2005 US oil was in steep decline. Scaling of fracking is a temporary life line not a cornucopia of ever flowing hydrocarbons. Offshore and other unconventional resources are much more expensive, poorer quality, difficult to extract without doing environmental damages. It's easy for old gray hairs to tut tut away the consequences as he will not be alive as they accelerate. Disappointing that a scientist has somehow intermingled politics in a situation that has nothing to do with politics. The laws of physics thermodynamics rule.

Thank you for such an inspiring conversation that discusses how important it is to accelerate the development of technology, especially CCUS, to mitigate climate change. It aligns with what I'm studying now in New York City. The main idea of CCUS is pretty clear: we see that fossil fuel demand keeps increasing because global energy consumption rapidly increases every year, and growing population and economic activity require energy. On the other hand, we don't want to add more CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, so there are no other alternatives to deal with these facts besides CCUS. Moreover, another reason why CCUS is essential is that if we could stop using fossil fuels today (which is impossible), the CO2 content in the atmosphere would still be 450 ppm; it would not decrease even if we stop using fossil fuels. Stopping fossil fuel consumption means not adding more CO2 into the atmosphere, but it will not reduce CO2 content, and this 450 ppm still contributes to global warming. Therefore, we need technology that can capture CO2 in the air, reducing it to the pre-industrial level. I think CCUS is not an option, it is a must.

The video featuring insights from Professor Martin offers an engaging and thought-provoking examination of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies. Despite the scepticism expressed by some experts regarding the efficacy of CCUS in mitigating CO2 emissions and combating climate change, this divergence of opinions introduces a valuable alternative perspective. As an Indonesian student at Imperial College, my research is dedicated to developing a tiered risk assessment for CCUS technologies. My interest is particularly piqued by the multifaceted challenges-technical, economic, and environmental risks-that this field encounters. These hurdles underscore the complexity of advancing CCUS technologies to a stage where they can significantly contribute to carbon mitigation efforts. It is my hope that CCUS technology will not only progress effectively but also that Indonesia will play a pivotal role in this global movement. Furthermore, I anticipate that the development of CCUS technology will achieve commercial viability in the foreseeable future, marking a crucial step towards sustainable environmental management and energy production. This discourse reflects the critical need for continued research, innovation, and international collaboration to realize the potential of CCUS technologies in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate change, thereby contributing to a more sustainable future. Kudos to all of the Endgame team for bringing such a fascinating topic as this

Western people tend to mistake the freedom of expressing political ideas with freedom of expressing ideas in general. In China, the political structure is relatively more rigid then the liberal democracy states, but it does not limit how people think and express the ideas of innovation, especially in science and technology aspects. It limits the idea of changing the political system to a multi-party systems like the west, but it does not limit other ideas at all. Yet, the political system ensures a stable society that allows all other areas to grow dynamically, such as economy, education, culture, technology, etc. The political system infuses state's attention and concentration on innovations, dumping a lot of public resources and infrastructure into it. This is why you see a so-called "autocracy" state drives the country grow so much so rapidly never seen in the history of mankind. Don't just equalize autocracy to limit of innovation.

Professor Martin Blunt from Imperial College discusses the pressing issue of climate change amidst a backdrop of political polarization and societal division. Blunt traces his academic journey from England to his passion for physics, emphasizing the imperative to transition away from fossil fuels to mitigate climate impact. Highlighting the disparity in energy accessibility, he explores potential solutions including social re-engineering of energy behavior and technological innovations. Blunt underscores the importance of critical thinking and education in addressing complex global challenges, while expressing cautious optimism tempered by the need for innovative solutions to avert potential environmental catastrophe.

Surprised that Blunt isn't aware of the real predicament i.e. for ex. we can not just reduce emissions at this point, but we have to ..geo engineer.. our way out of the situation. Climate change is just an economic problem. The problem, in my opinion, is that economics is far behind the physics. As the result, we have a lot of types of weaponry, that can destroy the humanity. But we still don't have a sustainable economic model. This model, liberal one, was a response to Maltusian trap of Holland and Britain in 17-18 century. This resulted in permanent wars in Western Europe, unconstrained growth and unconstrained industrial and science development. Then, of course, was decrease of fertility, social security, scarce labor force and shared prosperity as a result. Unlimited consumption is not a sequence of human nature, but an effect of economic model. Some countries couldn't also stop the growth of population and have created the bigger trouble. The economic model need to be replaced, but not due to the climate change, but as a result of the world security requirements.

The fact is science is political in so far as if you articulate views that challenge the current paradigm you invariably get ostracised by way of either funding career or both. Then moving on to our societies, these definitely in the UK and US are broken. The reasons are complex but broadly inequality, inadequate political systems, too much technology and too much information. The net result is an antisocial mentality that is manifested from a stressed, psychologically unhappy populous. So whether it's COVID or climate change all arguments get a largely paranoid kick back that may well signal our dystopian destiny some time soon.

You don't need to produce such a crazy amount of electricity for all of the humanity - humanity doesn't need that much. A person’s SWB consists of basic needs + help from relatives or the state + plus good relationships + achieving your goals. You don't need a personal car with a carrying capacity of 3 tons and a power of 250 hours per person, in most cases a bicycle is the best solution. Since 15 thousand US dollars, the country's SWB stops growing. Less inequality means higher SBB. 4 thousand modern dollars was enough for the USSR to be at the same SWB level as today's Austria and Italy. 2. The best way to mitigate the Earth's ecological footprint is to reduce the number of people. This is the most important topic for Indonesia and it is easy to achieve. 3. The more educated a nation is, the larger part of the population is prescribed antidepressants.
